Greenche
The neighborhood little sister
I don’t know if this white woman was just having a bad day or if she was racist but this was a little strange.
My college is doing curbside pick up for books. They want to minimize the amount of folks going in and out.
So I go to campus and go to the little tent.. a black man gets me name and waves me forward to the tent. So I go forward.
A white woman brings my bags out. She comes out all chipper and perky sounding and I notice that the bag looked a little odd.. so I look in the bag and I was only given 2 out of 4 of my books.
So, I said “excuse me I’m missing some items.. this is just a card but I was supposed to have an actual psychology book.” And then her mood just changed.. she went from happy to looking pissed and then said(with an attitude) “are you sure you didn’t order a digital book?” And I said “yes, ma’am I’m positive.. “ so I pull up the order form to show her. She didn’t seem to like that.
Then she sighed and asked me to give her my name and spell it. Y’all. My name is only 5 letters. It’s not hard to spell at all. So I said “My name is Greenche..” and I spelled it out for her.. she used the little walkie talkie and said “Recheck the order for Greenche.. G-R-I-E...” so I’m looking like wtf.. then I waited until she finished talking and I said “Oh, no.. it’s spelled like G-R-E” and then she cut me off and said “it’s close enough.”
So I’m like..
Then she said “Well, they accidentally gave you the wrong book.. it’s not my fault the stores a mess.” Like.. okay.. I didn’t say it was.
Anyway and so I told her that I was also missing my English book and then did a heavy sigh and went back into the store.. so I look at my mom and I’m like “”.. like what’s wrong with her.
Then she comes back and says “Look. I don’t know what happened. I don’t know what they’re doing. You did have an order for an English book but they just didn’t send it.. give me your cell number”.. then she shoved the paper into the car and I wrote my number on it.. they’re supposed to call when the book is ready but who knows how long that’ll be.
It’s been a while since I put my order in and they emailed me saying that everything was ready at 8:30 am.. it makes me want to go back in like a few hours.
Y’all. I was looking at her paper and tell me why my name and phone number was actually written on the paper. She had all my information.. so I don’t know why she acted like she couldn’t spell my name..
Anyway, she took the paper back and kind of snatched it and that’s when my mom finally gave her a look.
It’s like all the aggression disappeared from her body and she said “We will call when it’s ready.. let me go get a psychology book for you.” So she took the bag back and went to get the psychology book. Then she handed the bag to my mom instead of me.
It’s like she become a completely different person. She was alright at first but then she became snarky and finally decent again at the end.
My white friend said that went to pick up her books earlier and the same lady was there but she was nice to her and understanding.
