I hope Booker T. Washington didn't say this in real life

In hindsight was he wrong though? He understood something about Black men that his peers didn't want to accept.

By the time WEB Dubois died in the 60s, he was able to see what Booker T Washington predicted come to fruition.
It wasn’t just black men this applied to...per his Atlanta compromise speech.

A lot of stuff in Self Made was made up. He probably didn’t say it. Just like Annie Malone wasn’t a biracial woman who wouldn’t hire Madam CJ Walker..

That's some bµllsh!t. When the story involves historical figures, you can't just make up fictional stories.

They are making Booker T. out to be something he was not.

This is not black history.

This movie comes from the same hack who gave us Bigger Long (I guess the name Huge Penis would have been too obvious) and the White savior in the movie Harriet. Now, she's doing this thing with Washington and the light skinned versus dark skinned issue.

More than likely, she went up and down the internet looking at social media trends and decided to put them in her movies. I'm sorry, simply putting "inspired by" to defend not telling historical fact is getting stupid and insulting. We now have people going around believing these lies. We even have people who should know better defending this practice.

So when is this going to stop? When is enough going to be enough? Hey, why not add aliens and ninjas to the story of Crispus Attucks? All we have to do is place "inspired by" in the movie description and all is well.

Sad thing is, we have people retweeting lies from movies and acting as if it's true.

This movie was clearly only made to push certain agendas.

This movie was littered with SJW agendas and quotes.

Contrary to popular belief, most of our faves and black public figures were not these super woke progressive types.
Yeah, I'm seeing that as well

Booker T. Washington > Quotes > Quotable Quote

“There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”

Damn 100+ years later and this is still true

Really, I don’t see a cult of black males writing books on how to get a white girl, or attending seminars etc... I don’t need to go on you know the rest. Malcolm readily admitted he was confused. Black men and women are in the same boat I don’t know why that’s so hard for some of y’all to accept.

They don't need to write they just do it.

You aren't that bright.

The more I read about black history, the more I feel conflicted. Great man, but some of his stances were messy. So I can’t really hate him.

If we would have followed Booker T. Washington, and his ideas of gaining independence through labor/infrastructure rather than more education, IMO we would have more to offer today

There are currently generations of other races who lack education, but have multiple trades that supports them, and has made them wealthy

Both Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois's philosophical thoughts were and to this day is important to evolve our generations into a more productive and independent people in the world.

I dont really have an opinion other than respect, but Ive heard it said that some Black folks were upset because white folks wanted Black folks to be on board with Booker T

Like people were going, "The white folks are kinda okay with this Booker T thing and want us to be good with it too?? Huh?? Whats this about? Naw, They aint gonna tell me who to like!"

Which is its own weird thing...

I saw the series back in December I use to admire Booker T Washington growing up after that series I now have a different perspective of him. He truly was a sexist and a misogynist.

I agree. But the book I’m reading said that he didn’t even believe that blacks should be trained in any specialized trade. He thought blacks should be dull good lil Christians that plowed the field.

"Washington believed that African Americans should "concentrate all their energies on industrial education, and accumulation of wealth, and the conciliation of the South".

This would have been a definite game changer, imagine if blacks did in fact continue to plow the fields, clean the gutters, and cut down the trees, clean the toilets etc - but only difference is your doing on your OWN land, and you able to sell/trade it amongst your own people, and keep your own money

Who really knew the land and resources better than the generations of blacks who worked that land for hundreds of years?

Compare that to what ultimately happened- a group of educated black people, who are still working for someone else, specifically someone who doesn't look like you, and can take whatever you have away whenever they feel like it

According to The Education of Blacks in the South, 1860-1935, Washington was even giving them training in the trades or industrial trades. He was giving them the bare minimum. Half of the students couldn’t even read or write properly.

See, here we go:
I saw the series back in December I use to admire Booker T Washington growing up after that series I now have a different perspective of him. He truly was a sexist and a misogynist.

It's fiction! Nothing in the series is true.

I’m not surprised when I saw the series most men of that era thought like Booker. Madame CJ Walker was a very rare woman in that era. They wanted women to be seen not heard. Sad but true

I wouldn’t put my faith in these movies or series. They are fictional most of the time to get ratings and create drama for Hollywood and Entertainment purposes

I don’t think the quote is real but I don’t care for Washington or any of his financial ideas. His ideas are the same reason the majority of black banks fail.

Hollywood is known for dramatizing so I wouldn’t be surprised if majority of the series is fictional.
