I was watching what’s love got to do with it. In particular the scene of the recording of River deep mountain high.

Yeah I know they’re bands that play actual instruments but I’m moreso speaking in terms of studio recordings. The music had more depth.

It never really went away at live shows, even rap. But it’s making a comeback in the recordings. I feel like the musicians are so used to doing one lick on a record and being sent away now lol let’s give them time to catch up

Soooooooo agree.

Wanna recomend this EXCELLENT oped vid about that the decline of musicianship and vocal ability of today's artists. The funding cuts to arts programs/marching bands in public schools was an insidious culprit that deserve a deeper examination.

Havent watched your video yet. But one day I did think of how most, if not all, of the singers from previous generations grew up singing in church. I haven't heard anyone who debuted in the past 5,10 years speak of how they grew up singing in church. Gospel (and operatic) training will have you full of range. Just an observation...

This was a great video! Thanks! It reminded me of my own practice which is painting. I’ve put all my life into it and then somebody waltz in with two squiggly lines on a crumpled piece of paper like... huh???

Summer Walker is the best example in this video. I’m so off topic lol but geez has the talent (in relation to what’s out today) but no personality, no stage presence, no social media training just ugh gross! When I listen to Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Whitney, etc I get chills you don’t get that anymore.

Same here... I feel blessed to have lived in a time and was old enough to experienced artists who played instruments. Elton John (70-75), Stevie Wonder (71-76), Joni Mitchell, Gil Scott - Heron, Sly Stone and many more

70-76 was the best period IMO.

Instruments started to fade away after the 70s I feel.

This is one my all time favorite songs. I remember hearing that Phil Spector was devastated when this song didn’t do well.

Instruments give music soul that computers can’t. Even the dance music of today is boring but if I heard a big band song from 80 years ago I would be ready to get up lol.

Ive been obsessed with this song since I first heard it about two days ago lol I’m so ashamed. It did chart top 10 in Europe. As much as a crazed killer Phil Spector was he’s a musicial genius and was super successful/ talented. Mans had a whole orchestra, Wall of Sound, come on now! His Christmas album is my favorite. Darlene Love’s Christmas and The Ronette’s everything chefs kiss

The Wall of Sound has so many great songs! He’s A Rebel, God Only Knows, and River Deep are some of my favorite songs from it.

Songs like these have that it factor and a major part of it are the instruments. Something I would like to hear in today’s music are more complex melodies, lyrics, and instruments.

Original instrumentation is still there in many genres. It’s not all samples.

Valid point. Even Aaliyah was singing in a church. This may be one of the reasons why many of her copycats end up failing. Her soft range was beautiful.

I miss it too. I think back in the day having a balanced and varied amounts of genres on mainstream radio helped a lot. Nowadays it's just dominated by pop, trap, and those electronic stuff. More good quality rock and indie stuff needs to come back up.

I ran across this video of Jim Morrison back in 1969. He predicts the future of music. (although to be fair, electronics existed then in music, though it was in it's infancy. He just saw the direction it was going.)

“…it might rely heavily on electronics, tapes. I can kind of envision one person with a lot of machines, tapes and electronics set up singing or speaking and using machines.”

Instruments started to die in the mid 1980s.

It was a thing throughout the 50s, 60s and mid 70s... But around the 80s? It was gone.

Agreed 100%

These were Top 10 songs in 1975:

^^^You be the judge and tell me which pair of songs are higher in quality.

Early to mid 70s was the best. 1970-1976 was music such as rock, reggae, R&B/soul, pop at it's peak... Especially with the likes of Elton John, Queen, Joni Mitchell, David Bowie, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Gil Scott Heron and loads more

I watched this and it reminded me of your post

I think Aaliyah was 10 here, again the idea of musical training from a young age vs the cursive singing girls of today who only started singing in studio

Me too. It's just another level of quality and talent. Music just sound a lot better with real instruments.
