Is setting powder really necessary in a makeup routine??

Personally, setting powder is a must have because it keeps concealer in place for the rest of the day. Make sure you're moisturised and using a hydrating primer or you could try going without it and see what happens.

maybe not if you're super dry. try a very light dusting? or a different power?

for me with oily skin it is absolutely essential

If you’re dry, no especially during winter. Sometimes I don’t use it because I mostly use cream based products. You could also just use setting spray

For dry skin, I would say no except for if you are someone who wears undereye concealer then maybe apply some with a brush/light hand, but that's pretty much it. I have oily skin so feel I do need setting powder applied to my t-zone since this is where I initially start to produce oil throughout the day. It also helps stave off the inevitable oxidation/separated appearance on days where I am out and busy for more than 6-8 hours and don't have time to blot and such.

Thanks for this. Can you recommend any hydrating primer? I’m using angel veil by NYX but I feel like there’s better out there.

I haven't personally tested hydrating primers because I mainly use them to blur my pores, but you could always ask the beauty gurus of YouTube. Here's a video

When it comes to makeup, it's just about whether a certain step or product does anything for you. Most steps I find are not necessary. It's what you want/need for that day or event.

Setting powder is necessary for me (I'll put powder on my skin even when I have on no foundation or concealer) because no matter what happens I always manage to end up looking like a glazed donut at the end of the day and ionreallylikedat.

I also have dry skin but imo powder is a must for mask wearing. The more popular ones like laura mercier aren't the best for dry skin though. If you don't have issues with longevity you can skip powder or try just using setting spray

Depends on your preferences. I always wear powder, can't leave the house looking like a disco ball.

I use setting powder as primer and a spray to set on top. Best tip I learned from Jackie Aina.

Not really in my opinion. It tends to make me look super cakey. I just light tap a similar color face powder on my face when I want a lasting matte finish. Other than that, a setting spray helps me just fine

I have dry skin and I use mac's prep+prime. It's almost like a moisturizer when it comes to its consistency. The fenty hydrating one is bomb too

It is for me because setting powder gives a nice blurring look. It can really help my face look smooth and I use it to blend out blush and bronzer because I like a really nice blended smooth look. I even use it to blend out eyeshadow, to set my eye primer and under eye concealer. It's a must for me.

Any recommended powders & sprays?? :actup:actup
I like urban decay all nighter setting spray

laura mercier for powder

Milani has decent sprays for the drug store category. I like the Make it Last spray that is a 3 in 1. It can prime, correct and set. The Matte and Dewy ones are good too.

For a good face setting powder - Laura Mercier is fab, especially if you have an oily t-zone and need extra oil control throughout the day. It comes in 3 shades.

For undereye powder the Pat McGrath Undereye blurring powder is A1. It’s lightweight, blurs, brightens & doesn’t make your skin look or feel dry. The Sublime Perfection loose setting powder is lovely too, it’s very finely milled & literally melts into the skin. The only con for me is that it’s not as mattifying as the Laura Mercier powder, but the finish is flawless.

For an everyday setting spray I’d recommend Skindinavia. They have 3 different versions: regular, oil control & bridal. For the occasions you need a mask & budge-proof base, Ben Nye Final Seal is the G.O.A.T.

Have you ever tried applying the powder on top of your primer (oily areas only) before your foundation and setting as usual? That little makeup hack changed my makeup life lol.

I notice my makeup doesn’t have finished look without a setting powder. Sometimes I try to do a quick natural look without it but to me once you put on foundation you kind of have to do a lite contour and set.

I have dry skin and Hourglass is the only powder I will ever use in life. It's so silky and gorgeous I love it. It doesn't get bunched up under my eye it just goes on smooth.

Personal setting powder under the eyes is a must.

Ive only been using setting powder for like a month. And yes, it makes a difference. Oil makes makeup melt. So the setting powder minimizes that and gives a more finished look. I have Laura mercier. The only other one Ive tried is Pacifica but I felt it made me look ashy.

Too Faced Born this way loose, Cover FX perfect setting powder, Hourglass, Charlotte Tilbury, Chanel, Koh Gen Do are all wonderful for dry skin. Just use very small amounts & spray a hydrating spray afterwards like Urban Decay Chill, ABH Dewy, MAC Fix+, Fresh Vitamin Nectar & lots of other hydrating sprays. I'm very dry & always use powder especially under these masks.

I use so many hydrating skincare products it would be a mess if I didn't. I never powder again during the day just kind of blot with the Beauty Blender Bloterazzi if I get too shiny. If you're very sensitive I would try the CoverFX powder first. It's talc free, fragrance free etc.

I use a very light dusting of Sacha Butter cup setting powder to set my concealer, T zone, and cheeks which tend to get shiny through the day
