Aww I love that you did this. I just looked at my mum’s results the other day, hers are similar. Although recent family history is Jamaican we have significant Nigerian ancestry.

I was shocked because I would’ve thought we’d have more Sierra Leonean ancestry (because food and music is so similar) or East African (because my mum and I look phenotypically Ethiopian).

This was a part of my search to find out about my family ancestry because there aren't many records that we have. Going into this I knew I would have Nigerian and Ghanian ancestry but the rest was a mystery to me. I am really happy with what I found out and and even happier that I had the chance to tell my grandma all about it.

Girl the money is spent! You better take that test (do they have an expiration date??) A lot of us aren't 100% black and that's fine, and it does not take away from your lived experience as a black woman.

I understand. But you paid for it so you might as well do it. LOL! Seriously though, Geneaology is awesome and if you look at DNA tests like 23andme as a tool learn more about your history, it's a great thing.

That’s so special, I’m glad you got to tell your Grandma. I love that you embrace all of this too.

No need to be scared, you should definitely go for it.

They didn't give you any Senegambian. That's interesting. Though you may still have some Upper Guinean DNA counted in the Ghanaian, Sierra Leonean, Liberian category. You also have slightly more Central African than what I'm use to seeing in African Americans. It's been awhile since I've looked through the results of other Jamaicans to see if it's similar to others of your ethnicity.

Senegambian(wolof mostly) wont be too heavy in Jamaicans but it is one of their components at lower numbers. Jamaica appears to have been primarily akan and igbo(females)

Love this! Congrats! my fam and I are Igbo (Nigerian) and match a bunch of Jamaicans/ppl with JA parents/grandparents. One matches my dad pretty high and I am so upset that I can’t trace it.
JA is pretty heavy Akan and Igbo based on history, and all the DNA results I have seen over the years.

Funny enough, I'm majority Yoruba and Mende. Both of my parents are Jamaican (as are our recent ancestors). I wonder why my roots are so unique

Congratulations, OP! It's such an amazing feeling when you get your results back

I would like to DNA testing in theory but, these people keep your DNA and share it with third parties. So it’s a no for me.
