how was this era commercial wise?

-Selling 350,000 copies in its first week, it set a record for the highest first week sales for a female artist at that time.

-Janet remains one of only seven albums in history to produce six top-ten hits on the US Billboard Hot 100chart, including the number-one singles "That's the Way Love Goes" and "Again"

-was the second best selling album of 1993 in United States with 4.3 million copies sold, behind The Bodyguard Soundtrack and was the biggest selling album by a solo artist.

-Within seven months of release the album had sold over ten million copies worldwide

-it’s her best selling album and should be certified diamond and be on the best selling albums of all times list but Janet doesn’t claim her sales.

With the exceptions of "What'll I Do" and "Whoops Now" I love this album. I even love the interludes. This was the 3rd consecutive slay for Iconet Legendson and foreshadowed The Velvet Rope's eclecticism

At what point in her career did they stop calling her michael jackson's sister?

Based on what I’ve read it was this era. The album is called Janet period and only ‘Janet’ was on the album cover, because she wanted to disassociate herself with the Jackson name.

Yes. "You Want This" is one of my all time favourites from her. I liked her look/style during this era as well. This era was her finally coming into her own.

Where Are You Now is amazing, I love it. I can fall asleep to it at anytime it’s such an relaxing song. My baby moved around for the first time when I played “Again”. The “janet” era is my favorite.

I must say, Jan puts on some SOLID ass albums.
In addition to 2,4,6,10,17 and 19 I used to KILL 21 (Where Are You Now) and 23 (The Body That Loves You).

But too, although her Discipline album got drowned, she had some BOPS that never even made it to radio.

In addition to "Feedback" do yourself a favor and press play, Enjoy:

I always think of Janet's albums as like a trippy film with several disjointed acts that somehow all play off of each other. Almost like she writes everything as though it's a diary of sound. This album is pretty brilliant though, it's not my favorite from her, (since it's goes back between All For You & Velvet Rope), but it's one of the most iconic transitions from a good girl image into a more xesual edgy persona. It uses so many genres such as pop, trip hop, new jack swing, r&b, quiet storm, baroque pop, hip hop and it all goes so well together. I love how eclectic this work is as well. So yay!

Favorites ~ That's The Way Loves Go, You Want This, If, This Time, Throb *, Funky Big Band*, Because of Love, The Body That Loves You*, Any Time Any Place

* = The Best Songs

I literally came to the conclusion last week (whilst listening to this six days in a row) that this album might be better than the Rhythm Nation era. I’m undecided, but both albums slay.

Throb” is that b!tch. I realized it when she performed it on the Billboard Awards this year. It still sounds current.

One of the best and most influential pop/R&B albums of all time. With this album she presented every side of her, both as an artist and a woman, and struck the perfect balance of everything she presented. She was silly yet political yet xesual yet sad...she was pop yet R&B yet house yet rock - all at the same time, and never let the quality dip. Countless female albums from Good Girl Gone Bad to Stripped to Love.Angel.Music.Baby to The Dutchess owe a lot to this masterpiece.

It is definitely my favourite album, and am currently listening to it (even before seeing this thread). It covers almost every genre from the early-to-mid 90s, and makes it a sonically pleasing experience. Talks a lot about social issues, but also brings forward her sexuality in a classy way (where many artists, and even herself with her later abums) fail to grasp. The complexity within this album is why she moved on from New Jack Swing, and most of her contemporaries did not.

My sh*t!!!! Janet, Jam, and Lewis were able to switch it up and create a new sound. It’s why she survived and was able to thrive after the NJS swing era.

Great album with a ton of music that relates to that time period and has a wide selection of sounds. Also, still Janet, bit different from the previous 2. Only issue, it isn't as good on shuffle as it is being played straight through. That comes with the change in times where any album with interludes doesn't play well when shuffled or played best on a record player or cassette where it is a continuous sound. But that doesn't take away from the work she and TL and JJ did on the album.

And you can tell Virgin invested A LOT more into this album, compared to some others. If you listen to it, and listen to Paula's "Head over Heels", you can clearly tell where Virgin's money went to.

Interesting take. Janet. is obviously the superior album and had a better roll out, but I think Paula's popularity just had worn off. The production on Head Over Heels is pretty slick and stacked (she had some of TLC's producers doing a bunch of cuts) and Paula was attempting to go in a diff. sound direction like a lot of her '80s peers, but it just didn't latch, it was 1995 and why listen to her when there was TLC, Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Mariah, etc.? I think that much criticized VMA performance she did of "Vibeology" really derailed her, and people moved on. Shame cause "Crazy Cool" was a bop.
