Veteran actor John Reilly, whose daytime-TV credits alone included General Hospital, Passions and Sunset Beach, died on Saturday evening, TVLine has learned. He was 84.

Reilly’s daughter, actress and TikTok personality Caitlin Reilly, shared the news via Instagram saying, “John Henry Matthew Reilly AKA Jack. The brightest light in the world has gone out.” A cause of death has not yet been shared.

“Imagine the best person in the world. Now imagine that person being your dad,” Caitlin wrote. “I’m so grateful he was mine. I’m so grateful I got to love him. I’m so grateful I made it in time to hold him and say goodbye. I honestly don’t know what I’m going to do, but I know he’ll be with me. I love you forever Daddy.”

The Chicago-born actor’s early career began with arcs on As the World Turns (as Dr. Dan Stewart), How the West Was Won, Quincy M.E. and Dallas (as Roy Ralston).

In February 1984, he made his GH debut as Sean Donely, Robert Scorpio’s former WSB (World Security Bureau) boss, who proved to be a bit of a foil during Frisco and Felicia’s Aztec Treasure hunt (watch his debut below). Following a redemption arc, superspy Sean was romantically paired with actress Tiffany Hill (played by Sharon Wyatt).

“He was a big brother to me. The kindest man you ever could find,” feellow GH vet Finola Hughes, who plays Anna and Alex Devane, tells TVLine. “I cannot express how sorry I am to hear of his passing.”

Following Reilly’s 11-year GH run, he voiced Hawkeye/Clint Barton on the animated Iron Man series, played Kelly Taylor’s pop on Beverly Hills, 90210, and then had multi-year runs on both Sunset Beach (as Del Douglas) and Passions (replacing the late David Bailey as Alistair Crane).

Reilly’s acting credits also include the short-lived spinoff General Hospital: Night Shift (where he reprised the role of Sean) and the web soap The Bay. And yes, he is the reason Talladega Nights‘ John C. Reilly uses a middle initial professionally.

RIP, Jack. I loved his portrayal of Sean Donnelly. He was an iconic character.

He and Tiffany were an underrated GH couple, IMO.

One of the funniest scenes on GH! I remember in an interview that Jack said that Sharon Wyatt really stomped on his foot so his yelp of pain was real. They were a great comedic team. I loved Sean and Tiffany as a couple.

Chile I thought this was Mr. Boats & Hoes - I was about to have a heart attack!

R.I.P. though.

Aww RIP John

I loved Sean and Sean/Tiffany which only happened because their popularity surpassed Sean/Monica's at the time and wasn't planned either.

Wasn’t he Mac brother and the Commissioner on GH? RIP.

No that's Robert although I think Sean was the Police commissioner at one point. He was after Felicia's fortune at one point had an affair with Monica then fell for Tiffany.

Also had an awesome friendship with Anna back when soaps wrote complex male/female friendships.

Thanks! I remember his face from when my mom watched the soaps, but I couldn't place his character.

I don't remember how he left the canvas, but it was one of those things where he was in the credits for the longest time despite not having as much to do as the 90s went on until they eventually phased him out.

I didn't even know that she actually stomped on his foot.:LOL::LOL:

Truth be told, Sean and Tiffany (along with Duke/Anna and Frisco/Felicia) were one of the reasons why GH lasted beyond the Luke/Laura heyday. They deserve their flowers as a couple and while it was nice to see that they had him back for a visit before he passed away (per the video that @Fake Francie shared), they should be mentioned in the same breath as the other beloved GH couples.

OT: do soaps even have (genuinely--not shoved down our throats) beloved couples anymore?

Awww. Kim joined GH when she was 7. Sean was Robert and Anna's best friend and became one of Robin's three godfathers. They worked together for years. Robin even lived with Sean and Tiffany for awhile after Robert and Anna were "killed." I ocassionally rewatch the Asian Quarter story when Robin first came to GH and other classic GH stories on YT.

My favorite actor. Love his voice and his portrayal of Sean Donely. Him and Tiffany were my favorite couple of all time. GH back then was everything. Was so mad when he got with Jessica, lol. Atleast Sean and Tiffany received their happy ending.

Robert/Holly should also be included on this list people seem to forget unlike most soap couples they were married for years and had frontburning storylines.

There are still beloved couples but mostly coasting on past reputation rather than anything they are doing currently: Steve/Kayla, Victor/Nikki etc.

He was accidentally shot by Luke and he was paralyzed. Sean/Tiffany left for Boston so he could work with a specialist she was pregnant with their child at the time. We later found out that it was a girl named Anna.

I always thought that Robert and Holly were celebrated, so much so that there were dueling fandoms between Robert and Holly vs. Robert and Anna. I guess I was wrong?

Patch and Kayla are still around and together? Well good on them. (My aunt, who was a DAYS fan when I was a child, loved them) (y)

So, they actually got a send off? I'm happy to hear that (do you remember when they left the show?).

No that existed but Robert/Holly was the transition couple between Luke/Laura and the other 80s couples.

Yes Patch/Kayla are still together.

Yes Sean/Tiffany are one of the few happily ever afters on GH (and one that stuck too). They left in February 1995.
