Compas (Haitian Creole: konpa), or kompa, is a dance music and modern méringue in Haiti with African roots. The genre was popularized following the 1955 creation of the band Conjunto International by Nemours Jean-Baptiste. Compas is the main music of many countries such as Dominica and the French Antilles, etc.

Whether it is called zouk where French Antilles artists of Martinique and Guadeloupe have taken it or compas in places where Haitian artists have toured, this méringue style is very influential in the Caribbean, Africa, Cape Verde, Portugal, France, part of Canada, South and North America.

Compas is short for compas direct in French. In Creole, it is spelled as Kompa, konpa dirèk or simply konpa. It is commonly spelled as it is pronounced as kompa.

The word “compás” in Spanish means “beat” or “rhythm,” and one of the most distinctive characteristics of compas is the consistent pulsating beat tanbou, a trait common to many styles of Caribbean music.[

Compas direct, literally means direct beat.

Post everything and anything Kompa in this thread from gossip to music.

Tabou Combo
maxresdefault.jpg

Tabou Combo is a Haitian compas band that was founded in 1968 in Pétion-Ville, a suburb of Port-au-Prince. The orchestra has performed throughout the world (North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and especially in the Caribbean). Tabou Combo was the first Haitian band to perform in Japan, Ivory Coast, Senegal among others, and were named the "Official Panamanian Band" in Panama due to their popularity, while also becoming the first Caribbean band to have a number one single in the French Hit Parade. They dynamically sung their songs in both English, French, Spanish and in Haitian Creole. Tabou Combo refer to themselves as the "ambassadors of konpa."

Emeline Michel, born in Gonaïves, is a Haitian singer who has been called "The Joni Mitchell of Haiti." Her songs merge native Haitian compas and rara music with jazz, pop, bossa nova, and samba.

Not too many things get me more hype than that “depoze kompa!” beat drop lmao. “Depoze kompa!” or “Men kompa!” or something kompa...and I’m losing it!

T-Vice

102000.jpg

is a Haitian Kompa band currently based in Miami, Florida.
Roberto and Reynaldo Martino, the sons of renowned Haitian lead guitarist Robert Martino of the classic compas band, Top Vice, were musically inspired by them to create music of their own. In 1992, T-Vice was founded as a successor to Top Vice, in which the T- is shortened twice, once from Ti', then ultimately from the word petit, which is French (as well as Creole) for "small" (hence "Small" Vice). They soon recruited longtime friends James Cardozo and Gérald Kébreau completing the original quartet and are still known as such today.

T-Vice band is based in Miami, Fl. It was formed in 1991. Musical influences include reggae, merengue, flamenco and rock n’ roll. Unlike most Haitian bands, T-Vice’s reach extends outside of Haiti to as far as the USA, Caribbean and even Europe. T-Vice collaborates with other popular Haitian bands, most notably, Carimi and even their rival band Djakout Mizik. They have also worked with the famous Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean and Jamaican musician Buju Banton.

James’ sister was married to their father so technically James was their uncle by marriage lol. Their younger sister Gabby is James’ niece.

I heard Selena’s family sued them over one of their early hits, “Sensation (Bidi Bidi Bam Bam).

Newer Kompa band, Rylax:

They’re based in Miami. One of their lead singers is Mac D’s (Harmonik) younger brother, Dimitri.

I don't like TVice. That's the why I posted that song. I don't know any of their popular songs.

I Like. Reminds me of that band Xtassy.

Yes, they are great! I like their first album, it’s called “Friend Zone”.

I really LOVED X-Tassy. Omg like from day 1 when they had completely different members (other than T-Klod). I’m sad that they couldn’t continue since T-Klod joined Kai and Tchoukito is in T-Vice now.

yeah I was sad to hear they broke up. They made great music. This is my problem with these bands. Too many egos get in the way.

J. Beatz’ autotune is usually really annoying and Blondedy is trash for peddling her skin bleaching products to our community...BUT I cannot stop singing this song! The video is hella extra like most Haitian videos btw.

This is one of Harmonik’s best songs. They play it at every wedding I’ve been to recently lol.

Who do you know? What do you know?

I can’t say but they are interesting characters. The people that attend the bals are far more interesting actually. I was sheltered and only went to Haitian family events. It was after getting divorced I started going to non-family events and discovering: the HIPAA breaking- RNs, credit card scammers, groupies, grimo-chasers, drug-dealing Nassau frauds, hidden wives, alpha males that really like d*ck on the low and orgy group texts. Yo salop san mizerikorde!

Yeah it sucks. Both are great opportunities so I understand both guys not declining. It’s hard for younger bands.
