I hate having up and downs. Last 2 months was all fist pumps and dances. Now the down hits and I am tired and can't move. My ups are longer which is the excellent part.

I also can't drink coffee, even decaf because I think it messes with my medicine. What do yall do?

Not sure what's going on with your thyroid, im not on any medication for mine but mine is being watched closely by my doctor (I have to get yearly ultrasounds) but I just incorporated dandelion tea into my routine in the morning because it has thyroid health benefits

consult with your doctor first of course but maybe that will help?

I wish you the best!!!

my thyroid is slightly enlarged and has nodules on it
Oh that is interesting. Do you eat a lot of salt or take weight loss medicine? Cause I did both before I got sick... or maybe I was already sick and didnt notice. Idk.

No I take in a moderate amount of salt and Ive never taken weight loss medication. I’m a fitness professional though so I do exercise regularly and intensely so I’m not sure if that plays a role.

in 2018 she had sent me to get an ultrasound and I was fine. In 2020 she sent me to get another and then prescribed me to get them yearly now.

on my regular blood tests my thyroid hormones are normal so I’m investing in getting a hormonal test that you do at home and send to a lab so I can get a better look at what’s going on. (The Dutch test is one I’m looking into)

I know cortisol can effect your thyroid and I do deal with a lot of mental stress so I’m not sure if that plays a role as well

I'm wondering if I have thyroid issues. What were you guys' symptoms?
I hve hypERthyrodism, (its different from hypo because my thyroid is enlarged)
Tiredness, jittery, fast heart rate, high blood pressure, edema if I eat a bit too much salt or if I drink too much alcohol, swollen eye lids upon waking sometimes, body pain if I eat too much salt, or sometimes its random.
Gray hair. Gray hair is not a big deal but it should stop taking medicine. Irregular periods.

Hey -- is your thyroid overactive, or under-active? I had an overactive thyroid that I had to have destroyed through radioactive iodine treatment, so now it's under-active. Sucks because of weight issues and I am admittedly bad at taking my Synthroid daily. If you're on Synthroid, you really need to take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a full glass of water a full hour before you eat anything.

I haven't noticed any reactions with coffee.

Sorry! Just saw this we basically posted at the same time. Yep - when I was hyper, it was very hard to control through medication. I would see an endocrinologist and see if they suggest you have radioactive iodine treatment to destroy your thyroid, and then they'll put you on synthetic thyroid hormone instead.

This made my goiter go away. It was fun in the prime of my hyper-thyroid issues because I lost like 70 pounds in 3 months, but I was having huge panic attacks and was jittery. Hyper can get extremely serious because you can have major fatal heart issues if you don't control it.

I've been both! Hyper, then had a treatment to destroy, now it's Hypo.

My symptoms:
Hyper
-fast weight loss (which was good because I needed to lose the weight. lol)
-fast heart rate
-panic attacks
-jittery/nervous
-goiter on my neck was forming

Hypo
-Cold (feel cold/cold hands and feet)
-swollen and painful joints
-Depressed when my levels are off
-weight gain
-EXTREME fatigue when levels are off (this is my fault because I suck at remembering my meds)

I had hyperthyroidism and big (and I mean BIG) nodules on mine, too. Ultimately, I removed my thyroid. I didn't want to but the nodules were so uncomfortable. While the biopsies I did showed they were benign, I just wasn't sure if cancer eventually happen.

I hope you can manage your condition with meds or with natural options.

I remember the suffering. Not fun at all. Just want to send you virtual hugs and support.

I promise I'm not trying to be argumentative, but TAKE YOUR MEDS. You can't use natural options for something like not having a thyroid or an overactive thyroid. It's like a type 1 diabetic trying dandelion root instead of insulin. You will eventually have horrid health effects from not taking medication whether you're hypER or hyPO. Of course, I totally agree that there are other natural things you can do in addition to medication that can be helpful for your health in general.

Sorry -- I just have been struggling with my thyroid for 12 years now, and when I have a period of time forgetting my medication, it hits me like a ton of bricks eventually and its absolutely awful. My TSH levels have been in the 80s at one point (and they are supposed to be between 0.0 and 5.0)

I absolutely agree with taking your meds. I'm anal about taking my meds and have never missed a day. I know folks who don't take their meds for days or even weeks and then wonder why they don't feel good.

With regards to my experience, I was not eating great when I was diagnosed and wish I would've have seriously changed my diet. I'm much better with my diet now (not perfect LOL). But I think back sometimes and wonder if I could've kept my thyroid had I been eating better. Maybe, maybe not.

I messed up and I didnt take my meds for 3 - 5 days then repeated it for a month because I felt like I was in pain. I cut out the coffee and now I am back tired, but the medicine has to kick back in again.

I heard of dandelion tea, what other natural things can we do?

Ugh - I wonder that too. I am a mess. You have inspired me. I'm going to buckle down and make sure I take my meds religiously. Because once I feel bad from that, I really don't have the energy to care about eating a well-balanced meal once I struggle through my exhausted day. I have no one to blame but my damn self. lmao!

When y'all say jittery, you mean like twitching or spasms? Because I have those. Twitching in my arm, shoulders and back and my heart races or feels like it's not beating properly. It usually happens when I'm trying to sleep.

So I actually didn’t experience any symptoms (to my knowledge), my doctor just noticed my thyroid was enlarged during my annual

Edit- I have a slight irregular heartbeat that I need to get checked out but my doctor said it may just be my anxiety (so I have to get a holster monitor to see)

I do deal with irritability thought, but I always linked that to my mental health. But I’m seeing some fonts say that as a symptom so maybe that could be one for me too.

yes it can mean that too. ESPECIALLY when Im trying to sleep. Turns out thats the time when people lose weight. You have to get a blood test for it.

I had mine removed. For me, it was the best decision, but I understand that's not for everyone.
I don’t know how true this is but I’ve heard that getting it removed can cause a range of health issues (don’t wanna scare anyone).
Because of this I’m contemplating whether I should get mine removed.

Yes, I've heard that too, but for me, it was great! My inflammation instantly calmed down because I didn't have that trigger in my body anymore. However, I had a very large goiter. It was partially behind my collar bone, so it wasn't that obvious to look at me, but the surgeon said it was the size of a small potato. It was also hard to do the periodic fine needle aspirations (not fun, btw) because of its location.

It's really important to have a good endocrinologist. For the endo, you need someone who spends time with you and listens to you and doesn't dismiss how you feel. For a surgeon, obviously, you need someone skilled enough that he won't mess anything else up while he's in there.

May I ask what symptoms and signs you were experiencing prior to you finding out that you had a thyroid problem.

Everything under the sun. However, I also have another autoimmune condition that I discovered not long after the thyroid issue was diagnosed. Here's a quick rundown:

1. Extreme exhaustion (literally sleeping 12 hours and still being exhausted)
2. Hair loss (at least 50% of volume). This was the symptom that got me diagnosed because I went to a hair loss specialist who suggested I get tested.
3. Flashing lights when I closed my eyes.
4. Joint and muscle pain, especially upon waking.
5. Always being cold.
6. The goiter. It didn't look that big, but it caused sore throats, coughs and a tightness in my neck.
7. Periodically racing heart.
8. Brain fog.

I'm sure there are more, but those are the major ones. Most of these, except the goiter, can also be attributable to my other autoimmune condition. The thing with autoimmune conditions is that many of them have the same symptoms. I did not gain weight or have problems losing weight, which is the symptom most people expect with thyroid problems.

Did you have to go on a special diet? Like gluten and dairy free for example?

No. A diet like that is only going to help you if you have sensitivities to those things. I was tested for celiac and it was negative; however, the test is not definitive. I've also had two endoscopies (because of my other autoimmune condition, which is pernicious anemia), and they did not show any celiac changes. In general, I think those diets are good for people with autoimmune disease, but not necessary if you don't have issues with those things. If you want to try such a diet, great, but always gauge how you feel. With autoimmune conditions, that is sometimes the best evidence that something is working because not all of them have definitive tests. If you try a diet like that for several months and you feel better, you should probably carry on with it.

Personally, I find extended water fasting to be more useful for autoimmune disease, but that's not something everyone is interested in.

I had a large nodule removed earlier this year. my endocrinologist and ent surgeon told me the nodule doesn't affect thyroid function. have you gotten your thyroid hormone levels checked?
