Do you have a hard time selecting a color because of the models brands use? I’m true blue caramel and I honestly hate having to figure out undertones/overtones when the model is Indian or mixed race.

Yes. I made my peace with having to use Indian or darker Asian women as examples when I look up products on YouTube LOLOL

But it is annoying, because non-black women use so much bronzer and tanning lotion, so sometimes it isn't a perfect match.

I’ve started to just buy whatever is called caramel and return it if I don’t like it. Fenty is ok but the undertone is too pink for me.

I got an email from umoja beauty about a sale but I got frustrated when trying to buy foundation from them last year so I have yet to try them.

I’m currently using Clinique foundation and NARS concealer but I’d prefer to toss my coins to a black and small owned company.

Pre pandemic I would just get matched by the pros at Bare minerals/Sephora I have either gold or neutral undertones depending on the season.
When I had to go lighter than my winter shade during the pandemic I guessed based on product description and ordered the lighter shades in each undertone family and mixed them.

I used them too. But I’m pissed that Indians didn’t come out with a foundation line. I need them to get it together because the rest of us need those different undertones and FENTY isn’t cutting it

I was so disappointed in Fenty! I thought for sure that Rihanna and I were the same shade, but the MUA at Sephora kept going lighter and lighter and still couldn't find a match.

FENTY was giving me Oompa Loompa. I like the eyeshadows but that’s it. I have an olive undertone. yellow and red undertones are horrible for me

Honestly, I never thought about he race of the model for foundation until this thread. It never bothered me as long as the shade of their skin tone was similar to mine it would give me a jumping off point for shade matching. Then I could narrow it down based upon my knowledge of my undertone.

Findation was also a huge help for me when I am purchasing online.

I used to get thrown off until I found my matches and just stuck to them. But the models in Bobbi Brown for mine are...
Natural Tan (in cold seasons) and Warm Natural (in warmer climates when I have more color)
bb_sku_EGXR21_1080x1080_1.jpg

bb_sku_EGXR12_1080x1080_1.jpg

I used these colors before I've seen any pictures of models, but if I had to choose solely by online pics and saw that Natural Tan one, I'd be like WTH? I wouldn't think I was no where near the color of that woman (only in cold weather). Sometimes I mixed the two. But I know exactly what you mean, OP.

Now if for some reason I ever changed brands, I might be lost

Idk. It's rough cause I'm right on the cusp of LS and brown, depending on who you ask. But I'm neutral to yellow. Lots of Indian women and foundations run way too red for me, but be just the lightest bit too neutral? Casket ready. It do be a struggle.

I don't wear makeup a lot in the first place, but at this point I've decided to stop wearing full face foundation altogether and focus on skincare/spot treatment if needed. Maybe a very light layer of tinted moisturizer for evenness.

This is me during summer, I only wear tinted moisturizer and bronzer. It’s always the best match for me.

Yes, for my complexion brands almost always use a darker skin Indian woman but the color will either end up being too red or too ashy on me.

Now I just mix colors because my skin is neutral but leans on the cooler side.

Its so hard to match..
The only time I can get away with one product is the summertime.

That and I honestly don't know what the hell my undertone is. I've watch videos after videos and read all I could...at this point close enough/not being casket ready is good enough for me.

I wear golden caramel in maybelline, I went to go buy it recently and I struggled so hard because all the lighter models were Indian. I know exactly what you mean.

I have an oliveish undertone so it's hard to find shade matches in general. Foundations either run too orange or too yellow for me

Black opal has good shades for light skin tones and I think they use black models.

Because I have an olive undertone it’s actually really helpful to see brown Indian/south asian women modeling the shade because I fall in that tone range.

OMG I'm so glad to know that this is a common thing!! I also have to follow Indian/south Asian or non-black latinas on youtube to find the right shade recommendations, and it's still off sometimes. Super annoying!

I don’t really have this issue because I don’t rely on models to find my foundation matches. I have become pretty adept at being able to correctly guess my foundation colours from photos of swatches.

Swatch photos in order from light to dark ( or the reverse) are most useful for me- makes it so much easier to see the undertones. Failing this, there are many South Asian Youtubers I can reference who wear the same foundations shades I do.

I’m a warm golden olive undertone so warm yellow toned foundations work for me.

I thought it was just me who was disappointed in the Fenty shade range. I bought 330 as I and Rihanna are of the same complexion and it was like a mask on my face lol, they really missed the mark with not prioritizing undertones. I prefer NAS, Armani luminous silk foundation or Pat McGrath, honestly.

Same here. I have about 3-4 skin twins on YT that I follow for foundation reviews. Even then, I do sometimes have to mix/color correct shades.

I am super yellow so a lot of what is considered 'warm' is too orange/peachy on me. I am yellow-olive. I literally have no pink, red, or orange tones in my skin. I didn't figure this out for a long time and couldn't understand why I wasn't getting the perfect shade. Cringe at the times I heard - 'Did you go to the beach this weekend?' Your girl was walking around with too dark or orangey foundation for far too long.:shame

I’m Tahoe/Syracuse in nars and wear luminous silk 9
Was wondering what shade you wear in pat mcgrath? I’ve been eyeing it up but I can only buy it online as there are no stores in my area to try a sample

I've come to the conclusion that I am golden. My skin is golden. Not super yellow but definitely not pink either. I prefer a more neutral foundation but it has to be a true neutral. One extra drop of pink and it won't work for me. But a too yellow foundation can make me look jaundiced. What sucks is because I get so dark in the summer since I love being outside and I get really light in the winter because I live in the NE. My skin tone changes depending on the season. I can never have just one shade of foundation. I need my face to match my body first and foremost. I always match my foundation to my chest since my face is lighter because I always wear sunscreen on my face but not always on my body.

You enter in a shade and it will tell you your correct shade in other brands. I swear by it. Stop shelling out useless coin for wrong matches!

I am a MAC NC44 so I have a general idea of what color I am looking for (sable, camel, amber, terra cotta).

I was just talking about this. I’m not extremely light but I am on the lighter side (Syracuse-NARS) and I hate trying to find my shade. They always have these grey colored Indian women. I’m actually quite yellow when in actual sunlight/good lighting and it’s like shades around my color are super grey or too red-pink. Even golden undertones pull neutral.

Yes! You can even use the testers now too. Just remember that their lighting isn’t the best. They should be making samples now too I would think.

Never heard of it. What demographic do they cater to?
by and for Black women!
I lean way more olive so I've always had a tough time finding a great shade and I saw Lys in the new at sephora, checked them out and was pleasantly surprised!
