THE BODY of a Norwegian man has been discovered nine years after he died in a shocking incident that has left a community reeling.

The deceased, who was believed to be in his 60s, was found dead in his flat in Olso, Norway in December last year when a caretaker entered the apartment to complete some maintenance work.

Furthermore, those who inspected the scene found a carton of milk with an expiry date of May 6 2011.

They also found a letter from April 29 - signalling the likely day of his passing almost a decade ago.

Oslo Police Inspector Grete Lien Metlid told NRK: “My colleagues and people who have worked in this industry for many years have thought a lot about it.

“This is a special case, and it makes us all question how it could happen.”

According to the autopsy, the man died from natural causes, and Lien Metlid said it’s obvious that this is a person who “has chosen to have limited contact with others”.

Not much is known about the unidentified man, but according to NRK he had been married multiple times and does have children.

But according to neighbours he was timid and not interested in talking to anyone

Rina Mariann Hansen, Secretary for Social Care in Oslo, told Norwegian newspaper VG: “In a big city like Oslo there are unfortunately many who live lonely lives, sometimes they choose to.

“The busy city life means we as humans find it harder to care.

“But I think we need to care more about who our neighbours are, and ask how they are. Maybe ask them how their day is going.”

Similar to Joyce Vincent, but her body was found sooner. It’s very sad.

So his children didn't bother to check on their dad for almost a decade? I hope they keep that same energy when it's time to settle his estate.

So the owners of the apartment complex never checked it? His children not knowing isn't too far fetched; they may not of had a relationship.

True, but then who called for maintenance?

Maybe, there was a leak in another apartment, and the maintenance worker went to check to make sure it didn't leak to his apartment.

Or ...

The maintenance guy needed to enter to check to see if everything was up to code his flat.

Maybe he didn't choose to be alone. He might have been the type to make others not want to bother with him. My mother's ex-husband laid up dead for 3 days until he started stinking and a neighbor called the police.

Wow.
It sounds like he chose to live in isolation and by cutting off all of the people that he knew. The trouble with that is, when people who choose to live like this, and they die, no one will know about it. Sad.

I'm trying to understand how this could happen. So he must have owned his apartment because otherwise his landlord would've been harassing him for rent. Even if he was a loner and didn't like socializing with people if you care about your parent or friend you will still check up on them regardless of how they feel. He must have not had any friends and his kids must have not had a good relationship with him if they didn't check on him for 9 years. So my last thought is how did anyone not smell his deceased body?

He was probably a hermit who didn't have much contact with his children. That's why his disappearance didn't raise any flags for them.

But didn't he have bills to pay, rent? Didn't he have a gardener, a cleaner who could have noticed? Was he retired? Did his work not ask about him?

I know a man (family friend of my grandparents) in his 60s just like this man. He lives alone, is overweight, lives in a disgusting old house with tons of junk and he will also eat rotten food that’s expired to not waste it. He is very cheap and has ruined relationships with just about everyone in his life including my grandparents over money issues. His own children don’t want anything to do with him and his neighbours hate him because his house and property is raggedy so they ignore him fully. If he was to end up dying I think it would also be days, weeks, months and ( I hope not ) years before somebody found him and figured out oh... he’s dead.

How could an autopsy been done after 9 years? I’m sure he was just skull and bones after 6 months or so

Because if someone killed him his bones would probably have some damage. Probably also didn't find any suspicious substances and his body position may have been normal (no signs of struggle). These are just my guesses from watching crime shows.

It says he lived in an apartment. There's lots of stories like this in Western Europe actually. Many old people die alone in these countries. Probably less likely to happen in more family oriented cultures like Italy for example.
