A fight that broke out at a subway station nearly became deadly after the two men fell onto the train tracks, and one came close to touching the third rail.

Police say the brawl occurred on Wednesday around 11.30pm at the Bay Ridge-95th St station on the R line.

The aggressor pushed the other man onto the train tracks and began fighting in the roadbed, said Eric Loegel, vice president of rapid transit operations at New York's public transit union TWU Local 100.

'The aggressor climbed back onto the platform and the man who was injured was seen walking on top of the third rail protection board, which sits on top of the third rail to prevent accidental contact,' he told DailyMail.com.

'At some point, he climbed off and laid down next to the third rail.'

Loegel said he was told that the man who laid down may have been intoxicated, but this has not been confirmed by police.

'That's when one of our conductors on the scene got onto the racks himself and activated the emergency box, which cut the 600 volts of power,' he said. 'This could have gone from an assault to a fatality.'

The conductor was praised by both his colleagues and strangers, who referred to his actions as 'heroic'.

'His quick thinking and quick action saved that man's life,' said Loegel. 'It almost looked like [the victim] was going to touch [the third rail] and, if he did, there's no coming back from that.'

At the time of the incident, the MTA sent out a tweet that read: 'N and R trains are delayed in both directions because of an unauthorized person on the tracks at Bay Ridge-95 St.'

Video released by the NYPD shows the aggressor and the victim arguing before the first man walks away.

He was held down by straphangers, but was able to flee the scene before authorities arrived.

The aggressor is described as a white male with a beard and mustache who was last seen wearing jeans and a dark shirt.

Meanwhile, police say passers-by helped the victim back onto the platform. The 29-year-old was taken to NYU Langone Brooklyn and police told DailyMail.com he is in stable condition.

However, it is unknown if he has been discharged yet.

Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS or to message them on Twitter.

Logel said there is an issue on the subway with getting prompt police response and he hopes that this can be improved.

'It's not always the case, and I'm not certain why, but it tends to take a while to get police to respond to a train or station,' he said.

'It could be employee assault or passenger who was unruly.'

People are nuts yes but America especially NY is nuts. How has NY not put up barriers yet at these train stations? Do they take joy in knowing that people can just up and jump in front of trains whenever they want? Or anybody can just push a random person if they want? Crazy ass people all over inside the train

No security around at times. Anything can happen late at night when its not that crowded. They talk about all these renovations and upgrades to the MTA or whatever company but can't fix these basic problems. Its ridiculous.

We are about to enter in a whole new decade and this keeps going on. Enough is enough. I am at the point where I fear going on a train more than I fear going on an airplane

Same here! I yell at my boyfriend to get back. Him and these other yahoos always go to the edge, lean over, and peer down the tunnel to see if the train is coming.

Impatience + Stupidity IMO... The train will arrive when it arrives! Keep your asses back from the edge and chill.

You dont even have to be standing anywhere near the yellow for a psycho to catch you off guard and push your ass on tracks. The platform itself is narrow if you have your guard down any push will startle you and your ass will be on the tracks. When I walk the platform I always keep that in mind and I stiffen my walk and if im just standing there Im poised to keep my balance if im pushed.I never have my guard down.

The platform that freaks me out the most is the platforms OUTSIDE ...Its extemely narrow and if youre pushed or accidentally fall you life is OVA. When I would go on those tracks with my kids I would damn near panic and feel woozy.I kept my kids TIGHT next to me we walked damn near on the wall.I would be shaking.

Im really considering moving out of state.Public transportation is downright dangerous.Thank god i dont live near any outside train platform.

This was one of my biggest fears when I lived in NYC -- people would get in fights or be pushed on the tracks without provocation. It's so f'ed up

With the way tech ology is set up I never need to look for the train. They have a whole sign that tells me then there are apps that tell me as well. I usually get there as my train is coming.

I'm surprised most public transportation systems in the US aren't like this.

Nah .... the Asians are hella suicidal so they need that. There are not that many people trying to get on the tracks on a day to day. We barely getting new trains and we getting barriers .... most cities dont have barriers and new Yorkers will find a way if they really want to be 1 with the tracks lol

The MTA always claiming it doesn't have the money to install barriers.

There has been public pressure placed on MTA, the past decade, to install barriers. Lawsuits been high as hell. News reports I've seen blame drunks.

The City and State won't do anything about it until payouts from lawsuits exceed the costs of installing barriers. That's how NY works.

That’s not at all stations in China. Probably Beijing because their rush hour is unreal. Platform jam packed. It’s not like that here unless a train has been delayed
They do. It’s in every city’s subway stations that have been built in the last 10 years. A smaller city, Shenyang, also has this in every subway station. As well as another city, Wuhan and Changchun (smaller, less populated cities (in terms of all of China) but still with a pop. larger than NY and LA) I’ve been there and it’s extremely effective.

China subway system is only like 25 yrs old tho.
And those guards are built because their rush hour in some cities looks like this

They’re too busy using our taxpayer money for Fvck shyt.
And then wanna up the fares for naught.
It’s a monopoly.
They know most people have no choice but to use the transit system.

I'm surprised most public transportation systems in the US aren't like this.

Glad nobody died. Native new yorkers know to stay far back from the edge of the platform, put your back up to the wall or a pole and watch your ass, especially when a train is pulling in. Obviously those budget cuts have effected our mental health care infrastructure, so there's a lot of nutbars hanging around.

I had to look at the street on the wall, this was near downtown. Most people know to stand as close to a wall and as far away from the platform as possible. Watch your back, sides and front at all times and don't move unless that car has fully pulled in. Mfs in NY are deranged and train stations terrify me so I take constant precautions.

The train system is lawless.

Once you go down there you might not make it back up.

"Funny" thing is de Blasio's wife implemented the Thrive program, which was supposed to help people with mental issues. Obviously it ain't working. :disdain
