Conan was on the air in '94?
Conan O'Brien replaced David Letterman on NBC's Late Night in 1993 when David Letterman started the Late Show on CBS.
Conan O'Brien was an unknown who was known by Lorne Michaels as a witty writer. Conan always wanted to be a talk show host and they took a chance on him. He almost flopped and was about to be cancelled. They say Jay Leno's father dying saved him because they didn't want to fire him at the same time Jay Leno was dealing with that lost. Conan was getting short term renewals (13 weeks at a time) and eventually built his audience and became very popular.
