Missing Clark Atlanta student Alexis Crawford found dead

ATLANTA — Atlanta Police confirmed that missing Clark Atlanta student Alexis Crawford has been found dead.

In a news conference on Friday afternoon, Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields said Crawford was found dead in a park in DeKalb County off of Columbia Drive. Police said they were led to her body by one of the suspects.

Officers secured warrants against and later arrested Barron Brantley. They were also securing warrants for Jordyn Jones - Crawford's roommate and Brantley's girlfriend, police said. She was arrested on Saturday and charged with malice murder.

Brantley waived his first court appearance on the same day. His preliminary hearing before a Fulton Superior Court judge has been scheduled for November 22. He remains in the Fulton County Jail without bond.

"While a motive has not been clearly established, the department did take a police report from Alexis Crawford on October 27, and this is a few days prior to her being reported missing. In this report, Alexis described unwanted kissing and touching from Barron Brantley," Shields said.

Friday night, Fulton County jail records showed that Brantley had been booked for a murder charge. Other charges listed were for probation violations and one for hindering person making emergency telephone call. Records show Brantley has several prior arrests.

RELATED: 'One of the saddest conclusions possible': What police said about missing Clark Atlanta student Alexis Crawford

"The case has come to one of the saddest conclusions possible and has been absolutely heartbreaking," Shields said. "And to Alexis' family, our hearts go out to you. I am so truly sorry that we could not provide you with a better ending."

Clark Atlanta released a statement saying they've "received the worst possible news".

"Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with her family and with everyone who knew and loved Alexis."

The university said they are making counselors available to talk with students.

Another sister, Alexandria Crawford, said she texted Alexis at around 8:44 p.m. and asked what her plans were for the weekend. She responded "nothing" and didn't respond further. On this same evening, Crawford shared a post on Instagram at around 9:03 p.m. She also responded to an Instagram group message with laughing emojis at around 9:24 p.m.

Alexis asked her roommate to take her to a liquor store on the night of the 30th. Police have since shared the last known images of Crawford showing her at the liquor store

Investigators have released several photos of Alexis Crawford, showing her inside the business at 595 Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard in Southwest Atlanta, prior to her disappearance. These show her in the clothing she was last known to be wearing and are the most recent photos available.

The roommate said said she took her to the store at around 11:30 p.m. and returned home. She said she last saw Alexis at around 12:30 a.m. before the roommate went to her bedroom for the night.

The roommate told police that Alexis was not in the residence the following morning when she left for class. She said the front door was locked and Alexis wasn't in the living room or bedroom.

Since her disappearance, the community has come together to search for the missing college student, who lives off campus. There was also a vigil held earlier this week, at her apartment complex where her parents prayed for her safe return.

Clark Atlanta University posted pictures to Facebook on Friday showing members of the community writing cards and then gathered at a sermon and group prayer.

Documents reveal how Alexis Crawford was strangled to death

Fulton Superior Court documents revealed shocking new details in the disappearance and death of a 21-year-old Clark Atlanta University student.

Court documents obtained by 11Alive detailed that Alexis Crawford was allegedly strangled and smothered to death following a physical altercation with her roommate.

Crawford was reported missing Nov. 1. Atlanta police announced on Friday they found the young college student's body in a DeKalb County park.

Five things we learned over the weekend in the Alexis Crawford case

According to a Homicide Unit summary, Jordyn Jones, Crawford's roommate and best friend, got into a physical altercation on Halloween. The report also revealed that 21-year-old Barron Brantley, Jones' boyfriend, got involved with the fight and choked Crawford to death with his hands. The warrant for Jones alleges she "did smother the victim, Alexis Crawford, with a *********** bag until Crawford stopped breathing and was deceased."

Authorities said Brantley admitted those details during an interview on Nov. 8.

The summary went on to say that Jones and Brantley placed Crawford in a plastic bin and took her body to Exchange Park in Decatur. From there, they put her body in a wooded area.

'Evil personified' | 'Best friend' charged in missing college student's murder

A Fulton County Superior Court pretrial report stated Jones' father told the court she is on probation for DUI in Michigan.

Jones is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 25 and Brantley on Nov. 22.

Crawford's funeral is set for Nov. 16 for 12 p.m. at Hill Chapel Baptist Church.

It's been almost a week. I wonder where she is. Hope nothing bad has happened to her or that she's in a bad situation. Wonder if her friends would know anything.

Police outline days before Clark Atlanta University student went missing

Atlanta Police have released information in the timeline of Clark Atlanta University student Alexis Crawford's disappearance.

According to a police report filed by her family on Nov. 1 at around 10:45 p.m., Crawford's mother, Tammy Crawford, said she last spoke to her 21-year-old daughter on Oct. 30 and that she "seemed to be in good spirits and was laughing" during the conversation.

Her sister, Monica Wright said they all communicated with her that afternoon at around 3:23 p.m. during a FaceTime call.

Alexis asked her sister if she could send her some money through Cash App. The father agreed and Wright completed the transaction.

Alexis asked her roommate, who 11Alive is not naming, to take her to a liquor store on the night of the 30th.

She said she took her to the store at around 11:30 p.m. and returned home. She said she last saw Alexis at around 12:30 a.m. before the roommate went to her bedroom for the night.

The roommate told police that Alexis was not in the residence the following morning when she left for class. She said the front door was locked and Alexis wasn't in the living room or bedroom.

Alexis' bedroom was said to be in the same condition as it was on Oct. 26 when "a separate incident" occurred, police said. Police did not say what this incident was, however, Alexis told friends that she "wasn't comfortable sleeping in there" and had been sleeping in the living room since that date.

Alexis' phone, identification card and debit card are missing from the residence, police said.

Crawford has not been at work since Oct. 29.

Police checked with Grady Hospital to see if Alexis was there of if they had any Jane Does, however, they did not.

Family says Crawford is 5’5", and weighs around 140 lbs. She has black hairs, dark brown eyes, and she had a mole that sits under her right eye.

If anyone has information, they are asked to call police.

This is where things stop making sense. What was this incident and why didn't she want to sleep in her bedroom?

I hope this young lady is okay.

I wonder if she was assaulted by either someone she knew or one of the roommate's friends and her disappearance is connected to that incident. The cops better squeeze that roommate until she pops.

They need to question that roommate some more. Seems like she knows the most about her before she went missing.

How does the roommate know for sure she wasn’t in the room? There were plenty of days that I just left for class without checking to see if my roommate was around.

The roommate either knows something more or she knows who could/is involved.

'Just come home' pleads family of Alexis Crawford, missing Clark Atlanta University student

ATLANTA — The family of a missing 21-year-old is leaning on their faith in spite of their heartbreak, as the search for the Clark Atlanta University student approaches a week.

"I just want you to come home and be safe," pleaded Alexandria Crawford. "Please prevent any evil that comes her way."

Her sister, Alexis, is a senior currently at the HBCU. The 21-year-old hasn't been seen since Wednesday, Oct. 30.

According to family, no one has heard from the Alexis since that date, and she's never been reported missing before - leaving them to fear the worst.

"This is a very difficult moment," said Rev. Markel Hutchins, an activist in the community who spoke on behalf of family.

Crawford's family - brothers, sisters, aunts and her father - gathered at Atlanta Police headquarters, Monday, appealing to the public's heart to help find Alexis. They described her as a fun-loving young woman who cared for her family very much - and they care for her just as deeply.

"Alexis is somebody that this family loves and cares for very much and they are praying for her return," he said. "We are here to ask the people of Atlanta to come forward with help."

Family said Crawford - originally from Athens and a graduate of Clarke Central High School - was living off campus while attending the school on Atlanta's west side, and had "recently experienced some things that no young woman should never have to experience," Hutchins said.

On Monday, police released details of the days before she went missing, under what Hutchins described as a "difficult set of circumstances," though family did not elaborate.

According to the missing person's report filed with Atlanta Police, Alexis asked her roommate, who 11Alive is not naming, to take her to a liquor store on the night of the 30th.

Alexis' phone, identification card and debit card are missing from the residence, police said.

Family met with the Atlanta Police and Clark Atlanta University Police departments, who have both promised to do everything in their power to bring Alexis home safe. And her father, Bobby Wright, promised he would not leave until his "baby" is found.

"I love you baby. Just come home," he pleaded, his voice cracking with emotion. "I love you. Just come home."

Hutchins pleaded with the public, asking for anyone, especially students, with information - no matter how small or seemingly insignificant - to come forward to police or Crime Stoppers.

"If you've heard anything that's gossip or you believe is rumor ... please come forward," he said, a petition echoed by Atlanta Police.

"We can't stress that enough - everything is important at this time because we need to bring Ms. Crawford home to her family ... that is our priority at this time," said Capt. Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel.

In the meantime, Hutchins implored the city to continue to pray for Alexis and her family.

As for Alexis' sister Alexandria, she had a message for the young woman, who she called a role model and her strength: "We are here for you ... God is walking with you," she said. "I love you Alexis. I miss you."

It sounds like she was xesually assaulted :(

The roommate said that she and Alexis weren't speaking because of something that had happened recently. So it's weird that Alexis would ask her for a ride to the liquor store. The roommate posted that Alexis was at the Detroit airport at around 5 or 6 pm but they aren't sure of what date she was there. I'm with everyone else. The roommate is involved.

Friends search area where missing Clark Atlanta University student was last seen

ATLANTA — A small group of friends and civic leaders gathered Tuesday near the apartment where a Clark Atlanta University student was last seen nearly a week before.

Six volunteers are searching an overgrown area across the street from the apartment where Alexis Crawford lived -- looking for clues -- anything, to determine where she could be. She was last seen on Oct. 30.

Friends say when they call her cell phone, they get a busy signal.

According to family and police, no one has heard from the 21-year-old since that date, and she's never been reported missing before. Her family said when they last spoke she was in good spirits.

On Monday, police released details of the days before she went missing, under what Rev. Markel Hutchins, an activist, described as a "difficult set of circumstances."

Police said on Tuesday that the roommate is cooperating with the investigation.

Friends are using the hashtag #LETSFINDLEX on social media to help spread awareness of her disappearance.

Anyone with information on Crawford's whereabouts is asked to call 911 immediately.

I'm just wondering why she would feel safer in the living room than her bedroom? This is very strange.

She probably invited a guy to her room and he must have xesually or physically assaulted her there. Only reason I could think why the police was involved and she couldn't sleep in her room anymore. Police need to question ex boyfriends or men she possibly has met online

So the police knew about the incident prior to her going missing

Hmmm, the roommate is looking REAL funny right about now. She withdrew from classes and went back to Detroit? Why?

Going back to Detroit, sealed it for me. I think she had something to do with whatever happened on 10/27. Although, they’re treating it like an isolated event.

Did the roommate set her up for something? The police need to question her. Why would she just drop classes and run back to Detroit? Sounds fishy.

I'm assuming the "incident" is xesual assault so I was thinking the roommate set her up to be hurt or stood by and did nothing while it happened. Why else would Lex stop speaking to her afterwards?

That’s kind of weird because if y’all know black folks like I do we not gone be beefed out for days then the first day we back cool I ask can you take me to the store. She left her keys and charger so she believed she was coming back and only making a quick run. The police need to put pressure on the roommate what happened in her room. You know way more than what you’re telling at first I was saying everyone shouldn’t jump on the roommate but now I’m calling bµllsh!t

I didn’t understand the “ride” situation either. She asked you for a ride to the liquor store and you left her there? She didn’t just grab something to hop back in the car?

Either the roommate was in on it or she knows something and fled for her own safety. Either way she needs to come back and cooperate. I’m not buying her participation.

I’m praying for Atlanta, man. For a city with a large population. It seems the politicians are not on top of the crime, not even a little. Between the xes trafficking and violent robberies, Lord have mercy.

The pictures that were released showing her in the liquor store? If you are familiar with that area it is sketchy but especially at night and is nowhere to be for just two young women but especially a place to get left at alone!!

There are a few weeks of the semester left, in the first semester of the roommates’ senior year. To just up and leave? It makes sense to not return Spring if you’re uncomfortable but to lose that much work, progress and money? That’s something you don’t consider when you’re in such a rush. Red Flag!

She drove her to the liquor store but flew back home? So you had a car but didn’t drive home. So, you just up abandoned your vehicle. Also, lived off campus so you left your home, almost sure there was no time to adequately pack and go.

It sounds like someone was FLEEING the state.

From the little that they’ve released about this case and from the roommate’s actions, I feel like the roommate is responsible in a major way. It’s really weird to me how they were “beefing” about the incident that took place in her room that caused her to be sleeping in the living room. Even the way her family described it “something no woman should ever have to go through” says alot. I also saw something somewhere saying that she went to the hospital the night that happened. I really feel like the roommate did something to her during that trip to the liquor store to keep her from telling the police something pertaining to whatever took place in her bedroom. I really was questioning if they even went to the liquor store until I saw that they had pictures of her inside of one. The roommate isn’t helping herself look good if she’s changing her number, withdrawing from classes, and fleeing the state. Like alot of y’all have said, they need to apply pressure to her because she knows exactly what happened and she’s trying to run from it.

I believe it was the roommates boyfriend that assaulted her. You know how girls can be...they get an apartment with another female but their boyfriend is always there too. Maybe her roommates boyfriend assaulted her, in her room, while the roommate wasn’t there and that’s why they stopped speaking. Perhaps it’s why she didn’t want to sleep in her own room bc it happened in there.

Also, you know how girls can be when foolishly in love...if they didn’t witness it they might not believe their boyfriend raped another woman. So it could’ve been a situation where the roommate didn’t believe her and she had the boyfriend in her ear telling her Alexis was lying too.

I’m also skeptical that it was Alexis idea to go to the liquor store. I say this because she left her house keys at home. That makes me feel like the roommate asked her to go and she quickly grabbed her phone and debit card and left. Sadly, I don’t think Alexis made it back home that night.

I went to Spelman for a year and a woman in the dorm used to sneak her boyfriend in the dorm late at night. He would sneak into our rooms while we were sleeping and go into the bathrooms while we were showering.
This woman’s roommate has a hand in what happened to her.
I’m sure of it
