What are some popular movies that were poorly acclaimed when they first released, but are liked/appreciated now?

I feel like Jennifer's Body is one for sure.

I remember a bunch of people said it was terrible when it released, but now it's become popular and is being praised for being feminist. I think that may have to do with the recent revival of Megan Fox but even before that, I was seeing a lot of youtube videos honoring the film.

"Scarface" initially got bad reviews when it was first released in 1983, but it's gone on to become one of Al Pacino's best known and beloved films.

"The Road to El Dorado" and "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" were trashed when they were released, but there is a lot of fonder appreciation for them now, and they both have huge fanbases now.

Revenge of the Sith. DRAGGED but now that the new trilogy is finished, a lot of the fans stay hyping up the movie, GL, and Hayden.

The Wizard of Oz. It flopped when it first came out it wasn't until they started showing it on TV that it became popular.

The Thing, it came out at the same time as E.T. It got shredded but it’s viewed as not just a great sci-fi horror movie but a great movie period now.

Shawshank Redemption

This is my first time hearing this. Shawshank Redemption was nominated for Best Picture and numerous other awards at the Oscars the year after it came out, it was basically an instant classic. Roger Ebert even gave it 4 1/2 stars at that time also.

I didn't know that either. I've only seen clips of that movie. I've never watched it in full. I think it was the way it was filmed that I didn't like about it.
for years I roasted that film because of james franco's riff raff cosplay, alongside past disney kids.
But I was mind blown after watching it, and even more mind blown when the bbc put it at 74 on their top 100 films of the 21'st century

A Christmas Story (1983). It bombed at the box office, but became popular through TV airings.

Came in here to say this. The prequels in general are better received now. I still can't watch Attack of the Clones with a straight face, but RotS is probably my favorite Star Wars movie. The campiness is part of the charm, but the overall plot/story of the movie is low key Shakespearean.

I came in here to say The Wiz as well, people labeled it a "blaxploitation" film at a time where black consumers were getting offended with that narrative.

Showgirls. That movie is a cult classic now but poor Jessie lost her career behind it. The movie was cheesy but it showed off Jessie's body and dance talent.

Fight Club

Studio executives did not like the film, and they restructured Fincher's intended marketing campaign to try to reduce anticipated losses. Fight Club failed to meet the studio's expectations at the box office, and received polarized reactions from critics. The film later found commercial success with its DVD release, establishing Fight Club as a cult classic and causing media to revisit the film. On the tenth anniversary of the film's release, The New York Times dubbed it the "defining cult movie of our time.”

Why you sceptical @BotswanaB ?

From my experience, the reactions were mixed. I didn't get a sense that it was generally hated upon it's release.

The Wiz. I was shocked to read that the movie was not well received when originally released. I always loved that movie.

It wasnt a blockbuster hit until it went to video in the years it was big on rental and the cable channel playing it every year it became a classic.

I just watched that movie the other night. It’s an exhausting film, but guys love it. I can see why it became a cult classic, but David Fincher has always been obsessed over as a director. I think the execs didn’t like how existential and surreal it was. This was a departure from Seven and The Game, moving towards the Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry trend of films that feel like really long music videos, just really aimless and self indulgent.

I agree. I didn’t think it was bad but I didn’t think it was phenomenal either. But definitely a cult film. Everyone was going on about it when it was released on DVD but that was the first I’d heard of it, don’t remember seeing it advertised on its cinema release at all.
