Naomi Osaka to choose Japan nationality for Tokyo Olympics

Tennis star Naomi Osaka has decided to take sole Japanese nationality over US citizenship with a view to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK.
Two-time grand slam champion Osaka, who was born in Japan to a Japanese mother and Haitian father but was brought up in the US, told NHK that it gives her "a special feeling to try to go to the Olympics to represent Japan."

According to Japanese law, those with dual nationality must chose one before turning 22 years old. Osaka's 22nd birthday is on October 16.
"I think I will be able to put more of my emotion into it by playing for the pride of the country," she told NHK.

Osaka, who resides in the US, defeated world No.1 Ash Barty in the final of the China Open in Beijing last Sunday.
Her victory, coming after last month's title success at the Pan Pacific Open in Japan, lifted her back to No.3 in the world.
She clinched her maiden grand slam title when she beat Serena Williams int he US Open final last year and backed it up with victory in he Australian Open in January to become one of Japan's biggest and most bankable sports stars.
Osaka, who plays under a Japanese flag on the WTA Tour, made her Fed Cup debut for the country in 2017.
CNN has reached out to the Japan Tennis Association and Osaka's agent for comment.

Not surprised tbh.

Japan supported her when the USTA wouldn't and she makes A LOT of money by being one of Japan's biggest sports stars.

I thought she was already representing Japan. I could have sworn she has a Japanese flag next to her name when she competes.
Well, either way, continue to get money young lady. But Japan is building up their teams with these young Blasians that were groomed in the US. As long as they don’t take Michael Norman, we cool.

She has been representing Japan for a while, but she still held dual citizenship.

The USTA has no one to blame but themselves. Their track record of supporting of young players is spotty at best.

So even though those Japanese comedians insulted her?
She was born in Japan, is half Japanese, and plays for the country. She's most likely earning a lot of money since she's one of their top players, and this is most likely just temporary. It would be dumb to walk away from everything because 2 ugly comedians said something racist about her.

So Joakim Noah chose to play for France for the olympics. When you hold dual citizenship you have a choice. Naomi has always played for Japan. With Serena Williams and other younger players emerging (Coco Gauff) I don't see why she would play for the USA. It makes zero sense financially.

not Japanese.
How do Japanese people act then? And were those comedians that told her to go and bleach the black off of her exemplifying "Japanese"?

Anyway, this is a smart move. In this case, it's definitely more beneficial for her to be the big fish in a small pond than represent the US and have to compete for attention. She's a bigger deal in Japan.

Which is lowkey infuriating, because Japan more than likely would not accept these biracial people as worthy representatives of Japanese culture if they were regular, everyday people. Since they can help Japan perform well in Sports, Japan now sees the value in them as citizens.

The whole thing just bothers me, tbh. It bothers me that East Asian countries can so openly and shamelessly express that their only cultural use for Blasians comes in the form of making East Asia look more physically capable than it actually is. It bothers me that if these Blasians were not gifted athletes, large segments of several East Asian societies would ostracise them. It bothers me that as soon as these Blasian athletes start losing or underperforming (God forbid they be human), East Asian countries (namely Japan and Korea) stop having use for them and quickly go back to viewing them as those pesky, genetically impure brown outsiders.

East Asia is lowkey the worst region on the planet for mixed people. East Asians' disdain and non-acceptance towards halfies is deep-rooted and traditional.

This aint about black. I'm talking about her mannerisms.
Even if she were to chose to represent the US what's there to say she wouldnt face racism? You dont face racism in the US?

No surprise here! I mean her father is Haitian
and she did alter her name to be Japanese to not face any problems while residing in Japan.

She is also born in Japan... so it does add up.

"What are black peoples demeanor?"
"not Japanese."

That is what I was responding to. Wtf does that even mean? I see no problem with her representing Japan. That's where she was born. That's where her mother is from. That's where she is making most of her money. That's a large part of who she is.

So she’s renouncing US citizenship? If so, that’s huge. I hope she doesn’t regret it.

Anyways, it’s a sure thing making it to the olympics playing for Japan but not so sure for the US, depending on the number of spots.

She could have chosen to play for Team USA...

To me, it was NID that she'd pick Japan,, though.

Why would she choose to play for Team USA, she was born in Japan? Not everyone wants to play for Team USA, many athletes do this in the olympics.

What does "NID" mean?

She left Japan as a small child and has lived in the US for the majority of her life. If it wasn't for the USTA being stingy and not giving her the support she needed/wanted, she would have been playing for America.

NID= never in doubt

She always represented Japan so I did not think she would choose otherwise. Good on her for being so good at Tennis while so young and good luck to her.

American comedians insult Venus and Serena Williams.
