Of course Naomi wants to represent Japan. She is a Japanese woman born in Japan raised by a Japanese mother. She is a Haitian woman born to and raised by a Haitian father who volunteers at the school she and her family built in Haiti. She’s well connected to both sides of her heritage so if given a chance to play for one of her countries, why wouldn’t she? America already has Serena and Venus. She’ll probably make more waves playing for Japan then she would playing for USA.

Glad to see one of my own people/a member of my own ethnicity winning anyway. :)

The Ybf.com reports:

"
Tennis player Naomi Osaka will NOT be representing the United States at the 2020 Summer Olympics. The 21-year-old, who has dual citizenship from the U.S. and Japan, announced she will relinquish her American citizenship and compete for Japan in Tokyo for the upcoming Olympic games. She’s currently ranked as WTA's No. 3 in the world.

"It's definitely going to be very special. I think there's no other place that I'd rather play my first Olympics,” Naomi said in an interview with Japanese broadcaster NHK. “I think that will be one of the most memorable things that ever happens to me."

So sad. She'll probably be begging a Japanese man to marry her in a few years.

EDIT: I guess I hit a nerve. Y'all do know that the Japanese are the most xenophobic people on the planet, right? They don't even let people who are born and Japan were descended from Koreans 100 years ago have full Japanese rights. Continue to think Japan is a wonderland full of anime and manga...

The US does? She's going where the money is.
The difference is they are a monolithic country so they don't mess with biracials at all but I get where your coming from. She could rep who ever she wants to especially since shes from there anyway. And being the only tennis player on her level will get her more money. smart move on her part.

It reminds me of when people were mad that Rihanna didn't support the U.S American football (soccer) team. Why does she have to, she's not even American?

I mean people probably are thinking if I support you first you gotta support us too but some people don't think like that and thats ok.

And I think if she chose Japan she can never come back because they don't allow dual citizenship but we do.

@Cocoa Bunny why are you skeptical? it's the truth some places do not allow dual citizenship that's why she had to choose quickly because Japan doesn't allow it after 21. She didn't want to loose her citizenship to Japan so she stayed with them for more money.

Whatever works for her and her professional career.

I am knowledgeable of her personal life but how did she come to be a us citizen anyway?

Smart move. Japan is her first home, and where she makes the most money. Truthfully, if it weren't for Serena blowing up at the US open we wouldn't even be talking about her like this in the US. The consistent winners or those with ott personalities float to the top in American media. While she's very good, she only has 2 Grand Slams. And while she seems like a sweetheart, she's too low-key to be constantly in the news. In Japan, there's no competition when it comes to talent or branding. She'll be their only tennis star.

Thats a very drastic decision to make at 21.

She had to. Japan only allows dual citizenship until you're 22. Naomi turns 22 next week.

Traitor! The Japanese don’t support her or see her as one even though she is.
But I guess you have to do what feels best for you.

Loud and wrong. The JAPANESE tennis federation believed in her and supported her when the USTA wouldn't.
Also it's due to her being Japanese and Japanese brands throwing millions at her that she's now the 2nd highest paid female athlete in the world.

I think US Tennis Association refused to help both Naomi and her sister while the Japanese Tennis Association gave them support since they were little.

I don’t blame Naomi for wanting to be a big fish in a little pond cause she literally has no competition in Japan.

Naomi is going make all her real money in Japan and it is mainly Japanese companies sponsoring her.

Relinquishing her American citizenship is probably for taxes reason too cause America is one of the few countries in the world that taxes their citizens on income no matter if it is earned aboard.

She's doing too much for a country that don't even claim her. They literally don't even see her as japanese at all unless she wins and even still, there are some people who will never see her as japanese because she is also black.

she's a clown.

Bye bish!

So you would stay here in the US if it interrupted your coins to be increased significantly and quick career movement ? Japan is actually investing her career with $$$$ .

Thats like another countries offering me multi-millions, I would be like fck the US too.

she moved from Japan when she was 2 lol she's been living here ever since she only goes back to Japan for business like appearances interviews and such she has no ties there except for money I don't know why yall mad. They tried getting American sponsors but were turned away so they went with Japan. And it's not like shes planing to ever move to Japan or date a Japanese guy which she would never do, this is strictly a money move.
