The Irregulars” has been canceled at Netflix, Variety has confirmed. The news comes just over a month after the series debuted its first season on March 26.

Set in Victorian London, the series follows a gang of troubled street teens who are manipulated into solving crimes for the sinister Doctor Watson and his mysterious business partner, the elusive Sherlock Holmes. As the crimes take on a supernatural edge and a dark power emerges, it’ll be up to the Irregulars to come together to save not only London but the entire world.

The show starred Thaddea Graham, McKell David, Harrison Osterfield, Jojo Macari, and Darci Shaw as the titular gang, with Royce Pierreson playing Watson and Henry Lloyd-Hughes playing Sherlock Holmes.

The series was written and executive produced by Tom Bidwell. Drama Republic’s Jude Liknaitzky and Greg Brenman also executive produce. The series is produced by Rebecca Hodgson. Lead director is Johnny Allan, with Joss Agnew and Weronika Tofilska also directing.

News of the cancellation comes despite the fact that streaming data released by Nielsen last week showed that “The Irregulars” was the number one streaming show the week it debuted, pulling in approximately 643 million minutes streamed across all eight episodes. In that time, the show edged out serious competition from “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” on Disney Plus, which came in second with an estimated 628 million minutes streamed.

The series also received mostly positive reviews from critics, holding a 78% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, in his review for Variety, Daniel D’Addario wrote:

“For all that we’re told these kids are special, they confront their duty with a sense of glum obligation; there’s little of the high-stepping curiosity and possibility that is present in the best of Holmes, and that one might expect from a show in which teens attuned to voices from other worlds avert the apocalypse in Holmes’s London.”

Deadline first reported the cancellation news.

Netflix needs to stick to their current day, subpar, situational comedies. They’re never able to keep up with these kinds of shows. It’s very expensive to produce and they’re not HBO. They don’t have the range.

Never heard of this show. It's hard to get out of that Netflix original series black hole.

I think people are over supernatural steampunkish period dramas, because they're all the same: magic, Victorian England, dark lighting, rinse wash repeat. How much different was this from Penny Dreadful or even that new Joss Whedon show on HBO? Or that carnival TV show on Amazon. It's all derivative of each other.

I watched it, it was decent. It was not as good as Shadow and Bone, but it was much better than Cursed. I couldn't even watch all of Cursed it was so bad.

i thought they would cancel it. it's expensive to make and it wasn't really attracting the young audience that it was suppose to because what teen wants to watch this?

i like that netflix is willing to green light a bunch of different productions but streaming has changed so much in the last couple of years (more competition than ever) that they need to downsize and start investing in projects that they know will be hits. they can't be taking all these risks because it's not working out for them. i mean bridgerton was their last big hit and with the duke gone i'm sure that series is going downhill. stranger things, the witcher, money heist etc aren't going to be on forever.

I knew it this show wasn’t unique like Shadow & Bones. Plus they have The Witcher, Winx Saga, Cursed so this won’t be missed.

LOL and watch(ed) all of them (not this one but the others). I forgot about Carnival Row. Is that ever coming back, I wonder?

It doesn't sound like it bombed my any means so I wonder what the real reason was. Their investors stay dropping millions on mediocre projects so I doubt it was money.

Ehh...

Netflix relies on deficit financing in a highly volatile field. It was only thanks to the rush of pandemic subscribers that they are NOW able to pay off debt they racked up 7 years ago when they produced House of Cards.

HBOMax has hit over 26M subscribers with steady growth and advertising revenue was way up fine aus of the pandemic.

Well, I'm glad I didn't waste my time. Shows like this are too expensive to produce to not be a smash out of the gate.

i tried watching it

it was too much
I was into it until the last 2 or 3 eps. That ending made no fµck!n sense. First their mom left to find out who opened the rip then her mother is the one who opened the rip?
