Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown may be Sega’s new esports-focused fighter

A recent rating for an unannounced Virtua Fighter game could point to an imminent revival of Sega’s fighting game series. In March, Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee rated Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown for PlayStation 4, a release that could be linked to Sega’s esports ambitions.

According to the rating, spotted by Gematsu, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is also known by another name: Virtua Fighter esports. Back in September, Sega teased a project named “Virtua Fighter × esports,” but did not announce a specific game title or platform. Sega said at the time that Virtua Fighter “will be restarted as an esports title to commemorate the 60th anniversary of SEGA’s establishment.”

A teaser video for the project showed footage of Virtua Fighter tournaments and ended with a shot of Akira, the face of the fighting game franchise.
Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown would be the (somewhat) logical follow-up to the most recent entry in the franchise: Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown. That version of the game was released in arcades in 2010, and ported to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012.

In February, Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada teased that he wanted a representative from Sega to come on the next episode of the Japan Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable, a panel show on YouTube that has featured developers from Capcom, Bandai Namco, Arc System Works, SNK, and Arika.

Harada did not explain why he specifically wanted Sega to appear, but he may have insight into the publisher’s fighting game plans. The organizers of the Japan Fighting Game Publishers Roundtable have not announced a date for the stream’s third episode.

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown
SEGA's Virtua Fighter series may be making a comeback soon with Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown.
The yet to be announced new entry in the series has been recently rated in South Korea for a PlayStation 4 release. The rating doesn't reveal much about the game, as it just provides a generic description of the experience.

You can find the machine-translated rating description below.

Playstation 4 action game in the form of overpowering opponents in a 1:1 match by selecting a character using a variety of skills.
Minor level of sensational expression
(expression of costume with partial exposure of female characters)
Minor level of violence expression
(for each character) Fighting with opponent characters with unique martial arts)
The Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown rating doesn't exactly come as a surprise. Last September, SEGA announced the Virtua Fighter x eSports project which aims to bring back the series to celebrate SEGA's 60th anniversary.

Virtua Fighter 5 originally released back in 2006 in Japanese arcades, with multiple updates released over the course of the years. The game made its way onto PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, a budget release that does not feature all the content available in the arcade version.
Reignite your inner fighter and prepare for the ultimate showdown! Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is the definitive version of the Virtua Fighter 5 series that incorporates all the enhancements SEGA has rolled out since 2007 with some brand new features.
Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown has yet to be announced officially. We will keep you updated on the game as soon as more come in on it, so stay tuned for all the latest news.

Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown for PS4 appears on Korean ratings board

ORA! ORA! ORA!

Get ready to Ride the Tiger once again, Virtua Fighter fans. An unannounced listing for Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown has popped up on the website of that bastion of industry spoilers: the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea. As spotted by Twitter user @nokcha334 the new title was rated on March 19 and listed as coming to the PS4 platform. This news is dangerously close to April Fool's Day for my liking...

While this is total speculation on my part, this listing suggests that Sega is preparing to release another new update for its fantastic 2006 release Virtua Fighter 5. The one-on-one 3D slugfest last saw attention back in 2010, with the release of Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown. The beloved but relatively low-key franchise laying has laid dormant since, despite pleas for a sequel from hardened fighting game fanatics, yer boy Moyse included.

While this is not the Virtua Fighter 6 that we all might have hoped for, this ratings board listing suggests that Virtua Fighter might be about to receive some form of fresh attention - which no doubt ties in with the mysterious "Virtua Fighter x eSports Project" announced by Sega back in September 2020. You better believe we'll keep you updated should confirmation and new info be forthcoming. Don't you go all mobile port on me, Akira...

An online listing for Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown has appeared on the PlayStation Store in Japan and Asia, which also provides a glimpse at the updated game's cover art.

The title will apparently be called Virtua Fighter eSports in Japan via Gematsu, so that pretty much seems to confirm this game is what Sega was gearing fans up for at TGS.

Ultimate Showdown's full-sized banner features 19 fighters though there's no one new to speak of here considering they were already available in Final Showdown.

Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown for PlayStation 4 has been added to the PlayStation Store in Japan with the ID CUSA20138 and Asia with the ID CUSA27067. The listings are not yet publicly available. The Japanese title is Virtua Fighter eSports.

The listings includes the following icons and backgrounds:

Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown was rated for PlayStation 4 in Korea earlier this month. With the Japanese title revealed in this leak, it appears to be the “Virtua Fighter x eSports Project” Sega first announced in September 2020.

Thanks, @PSNrelease2 (2).

Virtua Fighter is getting a brand-new remake, marking a return to the spotlight for the classic fighting game series after a decade-long absence. While it's not quite a shadow drop, it will nevertheless be out very soon.

First released to arcade back in 1993, Virtua Fighter is a pioneering 3D fighting game series. While it's been eclipsed in popularity by Tekken, its contemporary rival, it retains a devoted fanbase in some fighting game circles.

Virtua Fighter 5, which was first released to arcade in 2006 and then to PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2007, is the most recent entry in the series. While the fundamental gameplay and combat will remain the same, the graphics are being rebuilt from scratch using RGG's Dragon Engine technology, a Sega spokesperson says. It will include new background music for every stage, a new user interface, a new opening cinematic, and new lighting and shaders.

In addition to updated graphics and background music, it will allow players to spectate online matches in real-time, and will also include the ability to build robin-robin style online tournaments. The private and public lobby system will support up to 16 players, and will include new communications tools like stamps.

We gave the original Virtua Fighter 5 a positive review at the time, praising it for having the "most intuitive and robust fighting systems ever assembled." We were also fond of its customization options and quest mode. It later received a downloadable revision entitled Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown.
Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is set to release on June 1.
