There has been a lot of separate threads made about boycotting companies and businesses in Florida but I think it should be organized for members to see and take action. Please send this information to family and friends and on all your social websites. I also think that we should make specific petitions to each company (like the NAACP one) so it won't just be LSA members but people around the nation boycotting these companies until the Stand Your Ground law is taken out. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD AND DISCUSS. WE NEED TO UNITE AND DETERMINE WHAT WE WANT TO DO TO PROTEST!!

But we do need to boycott any corporation that has a company headquartered in Florida.
We need to also blockade the doors of the justice centers in Jacksonville Florida.
We need to boycott any company that does business with Sanford, Florida. I dont care if they use them to send paper clips, they need to be boycotted against.
We need to still wear our hoodies the next day to work.
We need to trend on Twitter: IAMSTILLTRAYVONMARTI N#
We need to get aligned with individuals who are willing to fight racial profiling.
We need to mute individuals that want to wrongly point out Black vs. Black crime as though we cant multitask or as if there are no Black communities challenging crime in their area.
We need to stop looking for White racists to understand our situation or empathize, why debate? Don't quote trolls.
Those in Florida, boycott and trend #boycottflorida

Again, I know that this sounds crazy too but I believe the poster was indeed right -- boycotting economically is an important counter that means ANY company that uses Florida for anything, clothing, anything we should boycott. We do need to boycott all commerce that has to do with Florida. What exactly is boycotting supposed to accomplish? This is a genuine question.

THIS.

I want to know what is the ultimate goal. Last year, I went to a Trayvon rally because the ultimate goal was for Zimmerman to be arrested and charged. For me to expend energy on a movement, I need to see a ultimate goal and everyone else should too.

With all due respect, and I mean to convey this message with the most civil restraint that I can possibly muster -- you should study the Jewish community and their acts of protest...but more importantly, you probably need to study American History and their acts of protest against England, because you received a constitution from it, a bill of rights from it, a different court system, and the legal system that you have to do because of their acts of protest. In fact the name protestant inspired the name protest. So you really probably need a good history class or American government class. Economic sanctions that are sometimes called boycotts have effectively worked by union workers for ages.

Thank you OP! There are so many sisters and brothers on here combined with suggestions and so forth, I hope we all can merge it, this sister said boycott a state last night and that sparked me..and then I came back and a sister had researched a credible source that actually cited Florida's boycotts in Miami in 1991! And then now a sister has posted petitions! Sisters suggested twitter accounts. Another sister just now has submitted protests in our local neighborhoods. I think it would be good because I want to be apart of this movement. Thank you sis. Bosslady, I didnt know all those restaurants were under Darden, I am forwarding this on!

Bosslady was on it, when she sent the restaurants: our long term goal should be in my humble to counter racial profiling. Stores also do this we need to tie it together. It should be against the law to profile in a store and profile in the streets that are public. Now if you have a private residence and I am in your house and you want to follow me around because you are a delusional racist, fine, but if this is a public entity you do not have a right to follow me, certainly not with a gun.

Damn, it's hard to boycott some of those. Big business has created itself for us to always be dependent on them despite their ridiculous policies.

Like Duke Energy is who my apartment uses for power, I can't boycott them.

Just doing a cursory glance at the list. If people in Florida were to boycott all these companies they would have no cable, no satellite tv, no cell phones, no internet access and no home phones.

They would be extremely limited on choices for home insurance companies, limited locations for where to purchase petrol, and what about people who use drugs from some of those pharmaceutical companies that are helping them to survive?

They would also have no electricity since most of the Power companies local to Florida are listed on there.

Again, what is this boycott supposed to accomplish?

What exactly is boycotting supposed to accomplish? This is a genuine question.

Boycotting will get our voices heard. For this particular situation, we're boycotting to repeal the Stand Your Ground Law. I feel like it gives people an incentive to go around killing others. After this verdict, racist people will think they can shoot anybody and get away with it according to this law. The Micheal Dunn case is similar to this case and I've read reports that his lawyer plans on using Stand Your Ground. It has to be stopped. Boycotting will hurt their revenue and change their stance on issues.

I think this is dumb. I could understand boycotting businesses that supported Zimmerman or something but boycotting businesses simply for being located in FL is not only dumb, but also a sad and ironic way to mourn someone that was killed simply for being black.

Also:

We need to mute individuals that want to wrongly point out Black vs. Black crime as though we cant multitask or as if there are no Black communities challenging crime in their area.

Thats the problem right there, we wanna mute sh!t that doesn't show us in a favorable light. Though it doesn't have anything to do with the fact that Zimmerman is a profiling killer, anyone that accuses blacks/black leaders of only focusing on racial injustice and turning a blind eye to black on black injustice is ABSOLUTELY correct. The fact that you want to "mute" this pretty much proves that point.

I think you and anyone else who agrees with your post should start over and re-think about the best ways to pursue this civil disobedience you speak of and focus it in the right places.

I would suggest that everyone, even those who disagree in whole or in part in boycotting Florida as a whole or Fla based businesses that you look carefully over the list of Alec affiliated companies.

the proceed to research the evil laws that Alec crafts and hands to law makers too lazy to even rewrite them. Stand your ground is just one of many...

I think you and anyone else who agrees with your post should start over and re-think about the best ways to pursue this civil disobedience you speak of and focus it in the right places.

You. NAILED. it!!!

On a serious note, I don't know if boycotting all these businesses is the answer. I am not devaluing boycotts, but I'm not sure it would be beneficial in this particular case.

People, you don't have to choose EVERYONE from the list. Don't be ignorant. If it is w/in your power do it. If you can't because you need the company or it is the cheapest or something (or you just can't live w/out it), don't worry about it. Stop bellyaching and coming up with every reason why you can't. No one cares.

So punish some but not others. Strong logic. I thought only zimmerman supporters were trolls

I understand that it will be hard to boycott some of these corporations. If not boycott the big ones, we can at least voice our disapproval. Sitting down and letting them do whatever certainly doesn't help. If they get mass letters of disapproval, then it might change something. Not doing anything and just accepting the way they treat us is stupid.

I am all for a boycott and it should initially be targeted. Hit the tourism business first. The rest of the businesses piggy back off of the tourism business. Ain't nobody trying to hear about racism but start messing with their money and I guarantee you will get a response.

Reading some of the responses here, I am not surprised the black people are still where we are. Jewish people NEVER let you forget the holocaust. Also they use their money as a sword. Jewish people will not let you treat their collective like sh!t. If you do you will pay because they will target you to break you economically. On the other hand black people....

Thats the problem right there, we wanna mute sh!t that doesn't show us in a favorable light. There is a black presence who fight black on black violence, they just aren't granted media coverage. When was the last time you mentored a troubled black youth, donated to foot soldiers who try to stop crime? If not, you are a hypocrite, you are in the same boat of those you "accuse" as hypocritical.

Those who commit black on black crimes are arrested and sent to jail, Zimmerman was not. It took 6 weeks for him to be arrested, he was never drug tested, and he was found not guilty due to a bias state prosecutor. This case shows how flawed your sh!tty state's justice system is, and there lies the problem.

you are a genuine idiot ...this is a genuine answer

read history books dumbass if you are too lazy search on youtube the many boycotts that helped advance the civil rights movement

ignorant fool

I understand your frustration and anger, we're all still trying to comprehend this injustice. But, that was a bit harsh. I think she truly was clueless as to how boycotting would help get justice for Trayvon, his family and our people. It didn't appear to be mean spirited. Let's not take our pain out on one another, educate her on how boycotting helps.

THANK YOU! Who do you think we should target first? Also, since celebrities are crying out about the injustice, we should tweet, email, etc. to promote and sign the petitions and boycotts once we get them organized. opinions?

All:

There's nothing wrong with boycotting, but if youre looking to repeals the syg law, I believe the most effective strategy is to get your local congress people involved...but I don't knock boycotting. I'm glad everyone is being proactive and involved. I'd urge those of you that are interested in making a change to stop engaging the apathetic and misinformed... :pwink:

Something more focused, something we can all do. Basically anything but what the OP has suggested

Yea, nice specific suggestion. If your going to criticize, at least have something valuable to say

That's why we need to manipulate the media like they manipulate us by putting the pressure on the likes of Al Sharpton to put some energy into highlighting BOB crime on his MSNBC show. More media coverage equals more donations to groups in the community who are trying to suppress BOB crimes. If the media doesn't deem it important, unfortunately we sometimes devalue it too.
Those who commit black on black crimes are arrested and sent to jail, Zimmerman was not.
I know of at least one case in the state of FL where a Black male shot another Black male and used the Stand Your Ground Law and got off. Went to his car to get the gun too. Not a whisper from the Black community. We have to stand up for all Black males whose lives have been cut short over BS! Hopefully, some good will come of this travesty and it will energize us!
