Oklahoma Republican says people don’t need health insurance — they can just use savings accounts

The most endangered Democratic in the U.S. is in the Oklahoma Fifth District, where Democratic Rep. Kendra Horn is facing off against Republican Stephanie Bice.

During a local interview, Bice explained why she doesn’t support the Affordable Care Act, even after the state voted to authorize Medicaid expansion in the state.

“Everyone wants to make sure we’re taking care of low-income families that need healthcare,” said Bice before she pivoted to say she doesn’t want such families to have care.

“Well, you don’t support Medicaid expansion, so that can’t be true,” the reporter fact-checked her.

“No, that’s actually very true, and I’ll explain that in a second,” Bice said. “The difference between my opponent and I (sic) is how do you get there. That’s the difference. I think that there are a lot of ways that you can utilize things like a health savings account. Instead of providing insurance, let’s give an individual a health savings account with a certain amount of dollars in it and let them spend those dollars on health-related –”

The reporter interrupted to ask how an individual could have a health savings account through an insurance company without having an insurance company, to begin with. So it would ultimately just be a savings account that the government would put money into for someone to spend on whatever they want.

If the government just hands people a savings account to pay for their healthcare, it may as well just be a socialized plan, unless Bice doesn’t intend for the savings account to have any money to cover for care.

Horn tweeted a question about how someone handles it when they’re in a car accident or a COVID-19 scare. The average cost for someone in the hospital with COVID-19 is $73,000, she said.

Sweet Jaysus.

My medical bills topped over 100K when I had breast cancer, a partial mastectomy and radiation treatment- I would’ve been in a homeless shelter if I didn’t have insurance.

This is why I vote Democrat, because Democrat candidates at least have a modicum of common sense.

This nincompoop can’t even explain her incoherent plan- I’ll get to that in a moment- still waiting.

This people are so stupid and insensitive. I have a blood disorder that requires hospitalization and expenses blood medication that I have to take every day I’m there no matter the procedure. If I have another major surgery I could end up in the hospital for a month taking the medication daily. That’s hundreds of thousands of dollars. I had to have a Botox shot in my pelvis and had to be in the hospital for a week, just for a shot. I think the medication alone was over 10,000 a vial.

These people are evil.

Seeing the re-thugican party for what it truly is and it isn't all inclusive. I wonder what poor and working class whites from that state that voted for cheat-0 think about him now? They better vote Biden/Harris if they know what is best for them.Smh

Medicaid expansion WORKS, and it's cost effective. A medical savings account my ass! Just the thought of that sounds complicated. That woman is a moron. When I was on Lovenox, the cost was 1,500...PER WEEK! And that was for my entire 9 months of pregnancy. Y'all want to pump that much into an account for me, have at it, hoes!

It can cost millions of dollars to fight Cancer. What kind of savings account can the average American utilize to cover that on the wages paid in America? These people are a joke.

Stephanie's family owns a tech company in Oklahoma City that she worked at for 8 years. So, she comes from money. She has no idea how overly expensive healthcare is. My aunt had to take an ambulance to a hospital that was no more than 5 minutes away. The most the EMTs did was take her blood pressure and give her Tylenol. My aunt had a bill of over a $1,000 for that 5 minute ambulance ride. Health care in this country is too expensive for the majority of Americans, not just the poor. Republicans don't give a damn about helping the average American. They don't even pretend to anymore. Stephanie didn't care enough to come-up with a plan that made sense.

honestly it's oklahoma ... she probably winning. they vote against common sense
I just have to say that I am SHOCKED that Oklahoma actually voted to expand Medicaid. Maybe that means Texas will soon wake up.

The prices you guys are listing for hospital expenses and medications are beyond outrageous and make me sick to my stomach.
It's no wonder I avoid going to the doctor.

Very interesting that this particular thread is about healthcare and all the ads on the page are about some type of healthcare one way or another. I found that quite interesting.

But back to the topic at hand: ReTHUGlicans cannot empathize with us normal Americans because all their stuff is bought and paid for, and the things we sit here and worry/stress about as far as our health and wellness, they get all the best care, treatments and medication that we could never afford.

And alot of people are very unaware that most Medicaid recipients actually STILL pay out of pocket. How do I know this? I have Medicaid and pay out of pocket for things, and I actually had a major surgery and they do not pay the full amount, you still have to pay a portion out of pocket.

As an Oklahoman this is a SAD fact.......despite Oklahoma being one the poorest, most uneducated states, these fools vote red in every election

Are kids going to school 5 days a week because when I was there they legit considered having kids in school 4 days a week. I was just like y'all can't afford less education. Oklahoma was such a culture shock for me. Their normal was so odd for me and they just could not get it together. Hopefully things are better but it's def on my do not go back ever list.

I was there when people were protesting because of women that got raped by a police officer. I'm actually shocked that they convicted him.

As far as I know kids are in five days a week....I think the smaller counties were considering four days. It's just a complete mess still

People are currently having trouble paying their rent. They are going to food banks to feed their families. Where do they get additional money for an HSA, because we all know what the government may kick in will not be enough for a damn fever? She's a dolt. Just daft!

A LOT of white people, suburban white people feel this way as well

Not just in the subs. I know a few hillbillies and trailer parkers that work with me that feel this way. One was sooooo mad about Obamacare even though they were struggling to pay for her father in law’s cancer treatment. And the only reason I found out about his cancer and their struggles to pay is because he ended being a patient at the hospital we work at.

Out of touch or simply indifferent to a sociopathic level?

One illness or accident can destroy a person or family financially. A few years back I underwent emergency surgery and had to stay in the hospital for several days. $70K for that one event but I was fortunate to have good coverage with negotiated rates provided by my government job.

The healthcare system in this country is so shameful. Other countries at least give the impression that they give a damn about their citizens. In the USA there is no empathy common sense morals nothing. It makes me so sad.

ok but HSA's take a while to build up and most ppl use the money to go to the doctor for normal visits, medicine, etc. This is one of the reasons i voted biden because i take health insurance seriously. i cannot vote for ppl who don't want ppl to have healthcare.
