Employers in Oregon are having trouble finding potential employees that can pass a drug test.

According to the Oregon Office of Economic Analysis’ quarterly forecast, the state has a 4% unemployment rate, the lowest since 1990. But many jobs remain unfilled specifically because applicants are unable to pass a drug test, the office said.

That employers continue to require applicants to pass drug tests is interesting considering the tight labor market and the legalization of recreational marijuana in West Coast states. As a result, applicants who use a legal substance (although still illegal on the federal level) are unable to get work, the Oregon paper Willamette Week reports.

Economists suggest that employers may still require drug tests because of insurance reasons, but they also think the report may point to a larger long-term issue.

“It is possible that these anecdotal reports reflect a broader increase in drug usage that would be both an economic and societal problem,” the report says.

Potential employees, even knowing that they could be denied a job for using marijuana, are still using the drug rather than abstaining and becoming eligible for more jobs.

they could be abstaining and it still show positive though. all of the heavy drugs clear the system fast as hell for tests. mary jane you can use only a few times sporadically, or once and it take weeks to clear.

you can go on a full coke binder 2 days before your test and pass it.

Colorado has the same problem. We had oil jobs paying high school grads 80-90k and couldn't really find workers who could pass a hair follicle test.

It’s not just them. They were having problems finding coders because of weed. The thing is someone can go do Hard drugs and will be clear to test in a few days. Weed however stays around and the more you smoke the longer it stays in your system.

I don't want to work with weed smokers. Some of us are allergic to it. It's a plant and natural and mofos can be allergic. #surprise

I live in this FAUXLIBERAL white power state and I love going to work and passing their strung out, smoked out asses by each day.

The love of drugs is a weakness in my opinion. I know it's not the popular opinion but I get tired of dealing with folks that are under the influence. It's annoying to have to repeat myself, slow it down and deal with a chemically delayed mofo. Ugh...stay with your herb while I get money.

I don’t see why they even test for marijuana in legal states.

Because some jobs you must be sober for. If someone is doing a job that could poison a town's water supply if they mess up, would you want them high or anywhere close to high?

What about someone operating heavy equipment like a crane or driving a semi?

Stop drug testing! And legal states are getting absurd...doing hair test for menial ass jobs.

I don't see any jobs testing for alcohol usage, and I'm sure most people drink on the job than come to work high.

If employers were desperate they wouldn't penalize people for smoking marijuana just like they generally don't penalize people for drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes. Those activities are legal but they both decrease productivity and impact profits.

Some of you make valid points no lie. Then it is some of you who need to invest in some Sativas, then make sure you get some Weed stocks.

Did you post them here so qualified non-addicts could apply?

I agree, some of us don’t have the luxury to be getting high!

Yep, and some folks claim it’s bad “luck” keeping them back.....lol

By the way, it’s even worse for some really high paying jobs that require security clearances....unfortunately some people’s pasts come back to haunt them, eliminating them from lucrative positions.
