no one could ever top whitney houston's performance, and no one was asking for a remake.

this is beyond stupid regardless.

The bodyguard is a classic and the soundtrack. I love Whitney.
But as a Latina I’m excited nonetheless. I hope it’ll be good. I know Lsa will be in shambles.

& FYI Debbie Allen played Anita (a role meant for a Latina) in West side story before anyone says anything

No.

LSA is not about to be in shambles, but your mentions are.

You’ve been hired to write a remake of “The Bodyguard.” How are you approaching the project?

It’s so much fun. When Warner Bros. approached me about the idea, I quickly said I would but I wanted the protagonist to be Latina. They agreed to that. There’s been a lot of speculation about what I’d bring to the remake and some people were assuming that there’d be a gay storyline to it. Instead of focusing on an established star like the one Whitney Houston played, this is about a young Latina performer who has just become famous. It’s about how her life has changed because she is an overnight sensation. In the 21st century, that means she’s in immediate need of protection. It was important to me to use this opportunity to get Latin faces up on that screen and to get their stories told in a big way.

This trifling airhead.dismissed a bw who spoke about the discrimination against Afro-Latinos while her non-acting behind was in the predominately black show Being Mary Jane.
Well her son committed suicide over the summer.

She's not doing so well.

It's always very telling when these people refer to Latinos as if they are separate from black people. As if there aren't millions of Afro Latinos living around the world right now. But we know that's not the type of latina he wants to cast for this role

This is exactly my issue with these people. When they say Latina/Latino, they mean off white or dark white like Racista Cabello or Jennifer Negrita Lopez.
They NEVER mean black or indigenous people. NEVER!!! This is the white supremacist sh!t they do all over Latin America where they SYSTEMATICALLY erase black and indigenous people out of their media, but feel entitled to black spaces in the US.

This man wants to make a whole other movie but attach it to the Bodyguard as a "remake", when it is NOT, in order to benefit from Whitney Houston's good name.
Boy bye!

I KNEW it. As soon as I saw the announcement and saw who was going to be behind it, the first thing I said was that he was probably going to make her Latina. Latina doesn't mean sh!t in Hollywood. It'll still be whitewashed, Hw Latina is simply a white woman that speaks Spanish, smh.

Starring Camila Cabello ????

Best of luck to him. The movie wasn’t that great. It was pretty universally panned by critics.

Whitney and her amazing soundtrack are the reason it’s a classic. Whitney’s connection with audiences and her otherworldly talent are what made it great. Who out there is a Whitney level artist? I’m not able to think of any singers with actual vocal talent who can also act.

The chemistry between Kostner and Houston and then the VOICE of Houston is what made this movie a classic. They need to stop comparing it to the original to try and use Whitney to sell this movie. Compare it to In the Heights since you want it about the Latino experience.

Um so he’s making the bodyguard into a Latina A Star Is Born? I was already not interested but now I’m just plain annoyed. All original thought left Hollywood years ago it seems.
Funny you mention a star is born. They kept those characters white af . The mention of a black actress or actor is shot down but they’ll do it to our movies.
That’s the bµllsh!t I’m talking about.

Why not re-make Westside Story??? That would make more sense.
Unfortunately I do have to remember this casting might be low-key about the erasure of Black women, which is so damn obvious.

Eh...taking something from one minority group to replace it with another just doesn't sit right with me. Like it's one thing to do it with white characters (since I've noticed people mentioning this) because they are the clear MAJORITY that we have seen on our screens for decades, their movies and shows could stand for some diversity. African Americans already have such low representation in the media that this just feels wrong. Go switch out one of the million Caucasian characters, not the few Black ones we have.

It would be more interesting with an Asian female lead. Latinx are too....heterogenous for this to be of any cultural significance.

As a person who is half Afro Latina, I (dis)respectfully disagree with you. The erasure of black women in Hollywood is blatant and gross. There was a thread in here this week about Zazie Beetz playing Stagecoach Mary and I can honestly say that’s some bs. This is not okay. If you can’t relate to black women and their frustrations, you should take your excitement to a Latino forum.

You can tell Hollywood has nothing to offer when they start making Wattpad movies and remakes .

Their clits are bursting for a Titanic remake .

Christina Milian talked about how they refused to cast her for latina roles. She even changed her acting name to Milian from Flores just to start getting roles for BW. And she's a mixed latina. But they are racist af.
fµck their racism.
You can tell they resent that black people are more visible in the US media than they are despite their successful erasure of black Latinos out of the Latin American media.

My response to basically all movie remakes is..."why?"

Also, if they do this I hope they also include a whole new soundtrack...I don't want to hear 'ner 'nother person sing ""I Willl Always Love You".
Well lack of content. This days movies suck. Woke culture ,forced inclusivity , woke everything and bad writing.

Back then you would watch a movie with monoracial straights and you would enjoy it not for who is on the screen , but by how well written the story is. This days with all the colors of the rainbow you can't help but groan.

So why call it a remake? There are tons of movies that were technically remakes but didn't try to market off of the name of the original...

Seriously. If you're changing everything about the movie- that's not a remake. That's a whole new movie.

1. Black Americans are the #1 most consistent moviegoers in the USA. (Not that more of us go numerically but that we are more loyal and go to more movies more often.)

2. There have been studies conducted proving that despite our long and problematic history, white Americans relate more to Black and mixed Americans than they do to Latinos. We have more of a shared "American culture" with music, fashion, sports or whatever. IDK. But most whites ain't fµck!n with latinos like that.

One study stated in America, when asked about 'races' outside of their own:

Asians relate most to whites. Whites relate most to black people. Blacks relate most to Latinos (hispanics). Latinos relate most to whites. Native Americans hated errbody else lol
Hilarious!

They could do an Afro Latina… but we all know that ain’t what he meant, so basically it’ll be a Spanish speaking white woman, and lord knows we don’t have enough films with white women as love interests!

I really hope they get Camilla goopy Carbonara to do it. Flop city!

Unless it’s a Black Latina (which we know it won’t be), they need to get the fµck away from this movie & Whitney’s legacy.

The Bodyguard is one of the most important pieces of her legacy & the fair representation of black women in film. Say what you want about the movie but it was a milestone as a big budget romance movie that didn’t degrade a black woman explicitly.

Well said
