What I loved about my church home was the sound doctrine. We learned Greek and Hebrew, well a few words of it. We learned how things were lost in translation, ect. We also were educated on the history of our faith. Well a couple of Sunday's ago a parishioner jumped up during a break in the service and went off with the "tongues." They then "translated" the "tongues" to English while stuttering and searching for words. The pastor then went on to explain how it was biblical based on Acts, blah blah. My daughter was very disturbed by the whole display.

Is your church Pentecostal or Charasmatic? No disrespect but this is not what I was raised on.

I Personally do not feel comfortable in Pentecostal or Charismatic Churches. I try to stay far away from them.

What you like about the church is the sound doctrine. If the pastor explained the biblical foundation and you need more understanding, ask for a meeting. (Or a book he can suggest on the topic.)It sounds to me like you accepted his teachings on everything else. If after his further explanation, you still are uncomfortable with it, then I would suggest finding another place to worship.

It sounds as if this lady may have been out of order or highly emotional. In addition, we are often uncomfortable with things we are unfamiliar with, especially as a child.

If this rarely to never happened in the past, I would not worry about it too much.

Speaking in tongues is allowed when there is no other way to communicate. But you should not speak in tongues for the sake of it.

I don't do religion/church but I have a family member that is the REAL DEAL. She is the most honest unassuming person I have ever met so it is not for show. When she gets in the spirit, she is GONE, in a real trance, shouts, and speaks tongues. She is not aware of what she's doing or saying. I've seen her have to be brought back "to". Now no one has ever tried to TRANSLATE so far as I know but whatever is actually going on with her is real. I don't really get "shouting" and have never in life had the urge even when I was in church every Sunday.

My understanding of the text in Acts is the disciples were able to speak other languages (tongues) so that those who witnessed the event could understand they were praising God (Acts 10:46). So, any 'interpreter' would be the person who also speaks in that language. For example, if you've never studied Chinese and start speaking it when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, then someone, who knows Chinese/is Chinese, etc., should be there (meaning they were in attendance to start) to translate.

Now, why do this? As a sign to unbelievers that God is real, Jesus is real, the our comforter, The Holy spirit, is real that they may turn their unbelief to belief.

1 Corinthians 14:1-25 NIV

Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.

Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.

Now, brothers and sisters, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the pipe or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? So it is with you.

Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning.

If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me. So it is with you.

Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church. For this reason the one who speaks in a tongue should pray that they may interpret what they say.

For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.

Otherwise when you are praising God in the Spirit, how can someone else, who is now put in the position of an inquirer, say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since they do not know what you are saying? You are giving thanks well enough, but no one else is edified.

I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.

In the Law it is written: “With other tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.”

Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is not for unbelievers but for believers.

So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

How long was that your church?

I don't believe the "tongues" as the modern church performs them are biblical. The Creator is not the author of confusion in my opinion.

I don't really get "shouting" and have never in life had the urge even when I was in church every Sunday.

I grew up in a traditional black church where people "caught the holy ghost." I'm not really sure about it and its why I chose the church I am now leaving. Growing up it always seemed that the people who caught the spirit were the women who were going through problems with their jobs, children, or husbands. When you combine that with the organist and the hymns and moaning I started to look at it with a cynical eye.

My understanding of the text in Acts is the disciples were able to speak other languages (tongues) so that those who witnessed the event could understand they were praising God (Acts 10:46). That sounds credible. If the woman next to me speaks Chinese and I translate it without prior knowledge that is a demonstration of an awesome gift.

Man listen.

I remember when Juanita Bynum posted her "tongues" on the internet. Totally incredible and those displays are what drive people away. HANDELEBOSHAYA is not a word.

@NanaPeazant
Thank you for your contribution. I'm just not sure about some of this.

Since you've studied Hebrew & Greek, then this should help you... Speaking in Tongues is from God ... we should all speak and pray in Tongues (the language of the HOLY GHOST)...

Strong's Exhaustive Concordance

Thayer's Greek Lexicon
STRONGS NT 1100: γλῶσσα

γλῶσσα, γλωσης, ἡ (from Homer down), the tongue;

1. the tongue, a member of the body, the organ of speech: Mark 7:33, 35; Luke 1:64; Luke 16:24; 1 Corinthians 14:9; James 1:26; James 3:5, 6, 8; 1 Peter 3:10; 1 John 3:18; (Revelation 16:10). By a poetic and rhetorical usage, especially Hebraistic, that member of the body which is chiefly engaged in some act has ascribed to it what belongs to the man; the tongue is so used in Acts 2:26 (ἠγαλλιάσατο ἡ γλῶσσα μου); Romans 3:13; Romans 14:11; Philippians 2:11 (the tongue of every man); of the little tongue-like flames symbolizing the gift of foreign tongues, in Acts 2:3.

2. a tongue, i. e. the language used by a particular people in distinction from that of other nations: Acts 2:11; hence, in later Jewish usage (Isaiah 66:18; Daniel 3:4; Daniel 5:19 Theod.; Theod.; Judges 3:8) joined with φυλή, λαός, ἔθνος, it serves to designate people of various languages (cf. Winer's Grammar, 32), Revelation 5:9; Revelation 7:9; Revelation 10:11; Revelation 11:9; Revelation 13:7; Revelation 14:6; Revelation 17:15. λαλεῖν ἑτέραις γλώσσαις to speak with other [tongue] than their native i. e. in foreign tongues, Acts 2:4, cf. Acts 2:6-11; γλώσσαις λαλεῖν καιναῖς to speak with new tongues which the speaker has not learned previously, Mark 16:17 (but Tr text WH text omit; Tr marginal reading brackets καιναῖς); cf. DeWette on Acts, p. 27ff (correct and supplement his references by Meyer on 1 Corinthians 12:10; cf. also B. D. under the word Tongues, Gift of). From both these expressions must be carefully distinguished the simple phrases λαλεῖν γλώσσαις, γλώσσαις λαλεῖν, λαλεῖν γλώσσῃ, γλώσσῃ λαλεῖν (and προσεύχεσθαι γλώσσῃ, 1 Corinthians 14:14), to speak with (in) a tongue (the organ of speech), to speak with tongues; this, as appears from 1 Corinthians 14:7ff, is the gift of men who, rapt in an ecstasy and no longer quite masters of their own reason and consciousness, pour forth their glowing spiritual emotions in strange utterances, rugged, dark, disconnected, quite unfitted to instruct or to influence the minds of others: Acts 10:46; Acts 19:6; 1 Corinthians 12:30; 1 Corinthians 13:1; 1 Corinthians 14:2, 4-6, 13, 18, 23, 27, 39. The origin of the expression is apparently to be found in the fact, that in Hebrew, the tongue is spoken of as the leading instrument by which the praises of God are proclaimed (ἡ τῶν θείων ὕμνων μελῳδός, 4 Macc. 10:21, cf. Psalm 34:28 (); (); (); Psalm 125:2 (); Acts 2:26; Philippians 2:11; λαλεῖν ἐν γλώσσῃ, Psalm 38:4 (), and that according to the more rigorous conception of inspiration, nothing human in an inspired man was thought to be active except the tongue, put in motion by the Holy Spirit (κατάχρηται ἕτερος αὐτοῦ τοῖς φωνητηριοις ὀργάνοις, στόματι καί γλωττη πρός μηνυσιν ὧν ἄν θέλῃ, Philo, rer. div. haer. § 53 (i. 510, Mang. edition)); hence, the contrast διατουνως (critical editions τῷ νοι<) λαλεῖν, 1 Corinthians 14:19 cf. 1 Corinthians 14:9. The plural in the phrase γλώσσαις λαλεῖν, used even of a single person (1 Corinthians 14:5f), refers to the various motions of the tongue. By metonymy, of the cause for the effect, γλῶσσαι tongues are equivalent to λόγοι ἐν γλώσσῃ (1 Corinthians 14:19) words spoken in a tongue (Zungenvorträge): 1 Corinthians 13:8; 1 Corinthians 14:22; γένη γλωσσῶν, 1 Corinthians 12:10, 28, of which two kinds are mentioned viz. προσευχή and ψαλμός, 1 Corinthians 14:15; γλῶσσαν ἔχω, something to utter with a tongue, 1 Corinthians 14:26. OP, don't leave your church! Watch this video and then receive the gift of the Holy GHOST!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8Km-o7T0ig

Don't wait on church service! Learn how to speak in tongues everywhere you go! As you speak in tongues, you are speaking a heavenly language directly to the God of the King James Version Bible. You want to speak to him directly without the intervention of Satan, don't you?

-------------------------------------------------
Today's Anointed Word = "You Either Become a Christian Or I Will Torture You Saith The Lord!"

Revelation 9:5
And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion.

Jesus is LOVE! Accept Him NOW! Or, God WILL KILL you LATER!

The doors to the church are now open, come to Jesus Or God Will Kill You!

Thank you for your contribution. I'm just not sure about some of this.

I have witnessed people who are speaking in tongues and demons struggling with their host to maintain the body. As you grow stronger you will be able to discern the difference. I posted Paul's teaching on the matter because he gives specific guidelines on how to identify the difference.

I was really getting into Church when the same thing happened to me. They took us to the back and claimed we were being baptized in the Holy Spirit. Then the woman started speaking in tongues and was telling us to do the same. I was so scared y'all I kept mumbling to myself "this is soo crazy" "I want to go home" in the middle of this forced debacle, a girl passed out. I was so uncomfortable, people really need to think. Why would you do something like this to people only JUST getting into their faith. It's too much. This happened after that part of the sermon where the pastor ask if anyone wants to come up and you go to the back room.

THIS!!!! They were out of order OP. Putting on a show. I call flag on the play. Tongues isn't gibberish. It's speaking a language you don't know AND when you don't know that there's someone THERE who speaks that language. At least you recognize the tomfoolery. I have never observed true speaking in tongues, just gibberish. At least you have enough sense to leave. A lot of folks are going to follow their Passa straight to hell.
