I didn't this was already posted, so I'm sorry for the double posting. My prayers go out for Eddie. How much can a parent take with losing their children. Geralds passing hit him hard, no Sean is gone.
It's not usually the mothers that determine the jail sentence. It's the courts and the fathers themselves who determine that. Usually a jail sentence for non payment of support is handed down after the subject is thousands of dollars in arrears for non payment and has avoided all court orders to do the basic thing and pay support over an extended amount of time. The jail sentence is meant to be a punishment and a deterrent for non payment, just like non payment of taxes. If you are ordered by the court to pay and you don't then the punishment after all else fails is jail, plus you still have to pay when you get out. As for garnishing wages, a lot of guys refuse to work or get paid under the table so the state won't take money out of their checks. It's a horrible back and forth that goes on with child support. Per your suggestion of mandatory volunteering, etc. just like you can't force someone to pay support, a court can't force someone to volunteer, go to rehab, or spend time with their kids. Plus, spending time with the kids is not putting food in their mouths. These dudes need to work and pay up, rather than sitting pretty on the outside idly wasting time. Unfortunately, jail is sometimes the only language that folks understand.
In addition, very sad story. Just heartbreaking for the Levert family.
OkSean Levert has died after a medical emergency in jail.
Levert, 39, was taken from the Cuyahoga County jail in Cleveland on Sunday night after suffering from high blood pressure and hallucinations, but died within the hour at Lutheran Hospital.
Cuyahoga County jail, warden Kevin McDonough said Levert had been sick and guards were watching him at the jail's regular cellblock because he had been acting strangely.
"There was nothing that would show any of this," McDonough said. "He had an illness while he was here and it turned into an emergency at that time."
Last week Sean was sentenced to one year and 10 months in jail for failing to pay $85,000 in child support.
Sean was the second brother of the R&B trio LeVert to pass away. Gerald Levert was 40 when he died in 2006 of an accidental mix of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
Prayers go out for Eddie Levert as his son Sean has passed. I post this under current events maybe it belongs her.

This is really sad. My heart goes out to Eddie. I am not a parent, but I know it has to be awfully difficult to bury your child.

We see sending them to jail is not working. Mandatory volunteering is called community service. Spending time with them does not put food in their mouths but it will allow the children to see their father and learn about him instead of viewing him as a paycheck. I know it is hard out here for single-mothers but we need to stop the cycle somewhere/somehow. I know these ninjas can fool you but 3 times?
he probably killed himself.
This is just too sad... I feel so bad for their Dad - he lost two sons in the past two years...
You said the man had a drug problem, this much I can read!
But did I lie in my post or does the truth hurt?
Most people on this blog has family members that can do better for themselves or those surrounding them.
I'm messaging Carlysia now. I haven't talked to her in a minute, but I'm sending my condolences.
God bless her. Is she still at Spelman?
Sean Levert's Family Asks FBI To Investigate Singer's Death In Jail
Two days after R&B singer Sean Levert died in police custody at the Cuyahoga County Jail in Cleveland, his family has asked the FBI to investigate the 39-year-old's death. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, cousin Michael Gibson said Tuesday (April 1) that the family is wondering if the reported "bizarre behavior" exhibited by Levert shortly before he died could have been a result of withdrawal from an anxiety medication he had been taking.
Levert, who was jailed March 24 after being found guilty of owing two women almost $90,000 in child support, was reportedly shouting unintelligibly and pounding on his cell door Sunday night, prompting guards to place him in a restraint chair with his wrists strapped down and his feet shackled to the floor.
"We wanted to prevent him from injuring himself," Warden Kevin McDonough told the paper.
Though a videotape of Levert strapped to the chair exists, it will not be released until after an investigation has been completed. "He was calm in the chair and then began to have shallow breathing. We called in our medical team and got him to the hospital," McDonough said, stressing that there was no physical altercation between Levert and the officers or other inmatesin the week that he was in the jail. Levert died later that night at Lutheran Hospital. Gibson said his cousin had never had the kind of "crazy outburst" guards described. He added that Levert paid child support, "just not through proper channels."
Levert, who the paper said had battled a drug habit, had been at the county jail awaiting transport to state prison to begin serving a 22-month sentence on the child-support charges.
The Plain Dealer also reported that it could be up to six weeks before toxicology tests on Levert are completed. Levert had told authorities that he was a chronic marijuana smoker and had high blood pressure but did not take medication to treat it.
It was the second tragedy in the family in as many years, following the November 2006 death of Sean's Grammy-winning older brother, Gerald Levert, who died from an accidental mix of prescription and over-the-counter medications at age 40. The brothers' father, Eddie Levert, 65, of the O'Jays, is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member.
Sean Levert had revived the band Levert last year along with group co-founder Marc Gordon as a way to honor the memory of Gerald.
I must admit that I laughed at the girl from Family Ties when she was on Celebrity Rehab for her addiction to marijuana. In my ignorance I thought that it was just a ploy to try and become relevant again. I honestly never knew that people could get addicted to weed to the point where it would actually be consider abuse. I mean I know plenty of people who smoke it on a regular but they don't seem to feen for it the way I assume crackheads and people addicted to cocaine do, so I just really never thought it to be a real addiction.
Either way its just sad. And I feel really bad for his entire family.
This is so common in the black community that you really have ppl excusing him for this. It's not okay! What if the mother couldn't take care of the child, where does that leave the child then?
