I have Seborrhoeic Dermatitis and low porosity hair, which is frustrating. I have been using the following products:
  • Neutrogena's T-Gel
  • Head and Shoulders shampoo
  • As I Am's Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Oil Treatment
  • As I Am's Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Leave-In Conditioner
  • Jamaican Black Castro Oil
  • Tea Tree Oil
But my head still gets very itchy, dry and flakey. Most especially when I do protective styles. I don't know what to do. Do yall have any tips?

I have pretty bad flare ups. My go-to is Head & Shoulders Clinical Strength (1% selenium sulfide) shampoo...and I just let it sit there for a while, like 30-45 minutes. Then I wash it out and apply castor oil. I also have low porosity hair.

@Cleanndirty just made a post about using colloidal oatmeal for her scalp that you should check out!

I use the Aveeno colloidal oatmeal on my face and scalp and my body loves it!

I add warm water to the oatmeal, stir it and double strain it and leave it in the fridge, use it for a week by doing a face mask, face serum, and applying it to my scalp when it needs to be soothed. I also add it to my clay wash.

Just thought I’d tell ya’ll about it since I didn’t see a thread talking about it.

I’m planning on also buying this brand because it has colloidal oatmeal as the first ingredient and is affordable and perfect for when I don’t feel like DIYing:

Have any of you tried oatmeal on your hair and scalp or tried this brand? I’m real curious to know!

I ended up breaking down and going to the dermatologist. She gave a script for a medicated Shampoo that I use in conjunction with the Neutragena T/Gel. It has been a godsend. I get it through Express Scripts mail delivery for $45 (90 day supply). It's Nizoral 2% (generic is ketaconazole)

ETA: you let it sit on your head for 5-10 minutes, and wash your forehead with it.

One of the things that first worked for me is
vegetable glycerin. I can't remember what made me try it
but I diluted it with distilled water one part to 3 parts water. I don't think you have to use distilled tough.

also you can try peppermint essential oil which has anti inflammatory properties or eucalyptus oil(I use mine when I Deep condition w/ heat)

mixed with a carrier oil your scalp likes

lastly you might want to try a evening primrose supplement. check with your dr if your taking meds or pregnant but it really helped me

Have you been to the dermatologist? I don't recommend it for the shampoo but of you really have been diagnosed with it, the dermatologist can give you a series of injections.

I know a lady that was diagnosed with it. She paid the hair stylist $400 for the treatments & still had it. She switched stylists & hasn't seen evidence of it since. Most of the issue was because the 1st stylist was not shampooing her scalp well.

A prescription for triamcinolone acetonide may also help with reconditioning the scalp.

I hope you find a solution that works!

This is the main thing. OP you need to heal your gut. Low sugar, low gluten and get a priobotic and fish oil with high omega 3 content.

As well oils feed the fungus. Stop using oils for now.

I have it too. T gel works for me but dermatitis loves oil so if you put castor oil on your scalp it's a nono. Just put tea tree oil, you can put aloe vera gel before to hydrate and then tea tree oil that's it.

The doctor diagnosed me with it last year and prescribed ketaconazole and that was pretty much it. I had no idea I could get injections or triamcinolone acetonide for it. I look into it. Thanks.

Straight tea tree oil won’t irritate the scalp at all?

Great topic. I struggle with this too and I’m currently having a bad flare up. I second not using oils. I have been using oils though. My instinct is to do that but it’s not helpful. I agree about sugar. Sugar contributes to inflammation and makes every inflammatory condition worse. But not eating sugar at all is hard. I plan to see a wholistic trichologist. Dermatologists and the harsh stuff they prescribe haven’t been helpful for me.

Oh I can help you with it I got rid of mine 3 years ago :
My doctor gave me a liquid that you apply on your scalp, disprosone 0,5% (i don’t know if they sell it the US) and it cleared in 2 weeks.
After this for maintenance I started to apply a mix of jojoba oil, tea tree oil and lavender oil on my scalp when I would see flakes. They are all good for
seborrheic dermatitis : jojoba is the closest oil to sebum, which is good because SD makes our scalp dry. Lavender oil soothes the scalp and calms irritation while tea tree oil is good for fungus.
I would also apply onion on my scalp every 6 weeks. Onion has tons of benefits for the scalp including clearing fungus and boosting hair growth
It took me 2 years to find this routine and it works perfectly
