There's not a lot of threads about sisterlocks on here so I thought I'd create one. I've been considering sisterlocks for a while now. I think they're a great investment due to the freedom and versatility it allows in hairstyling (imo) and of course they're so beautiful. I've had my fun with loose natural hair, grown my hair to my waist and everything, but I think I'm ready for that next step in my natural hair "journey". What about you? Anyone else considering sisterlocks? Feel free to enjoy the thread regardless and contribute some of your own sisterlocks inspo!:)

I have 'large' sisterlocks and I'm so glad I got them. They're so cute even though they take forever to retighten (T__T)

Ugh, I LOVE the way these look, but I don't like the idea of being tied to a hairdresser and I've heard varying things about the quality of sister lock consultants based on where you are. I travel too much for that. I could learn to do it myself but I ain't trying to tighten 5,000 locks. I will continue to admire from afar.

Yeah, I had similar reservations regarding sisterlocks, but I now think it's worth it considering it would save time when it came to styling my hair and it will make length retention easier (for me) since I prefer long hair. And if you think of it this way, you'll likely have only 300-500 locs on your head which will you'd only have to retighten once every 6-8 weeks. That's 6-8 weeks of you not having to fuss with your hair if you don't want to. And I definitely plan on taking the retightening course so I can maintain my own hair and save money...(and because I don't really trust most consultants either, some are really only good for that first install). It should only take up to 6 hours max every two months to retighten which is way less time than I spend on my loose natural hair in a month.

:bawling: that looks like it takes a llllllllllloooooonnnnnnnnnngggggg time to do. They look beautiful but the way the nerves in my butt are setup. No ma'am. I would have to get them redone in sections.

There's a reason I've never had micros.

How long does it take you to retighten? Do you do it yourself or go to a consultant/trainee?

How much does each retightening session cost?

It varies depending on your consultant and how many locs you have. So it could range from $70-$100. That kind of money adds up even if you were to stretch your sessions up to 2 months apart. But the way I see it, some women spend just as much or more on their loose natural hair/extensions/other beauty products in a year than the cost to professionally maintain sisterlocks for a year. So I don't think it's a bad investment. I still plan to maintain my own locs though, the method in which it's done is pretty much out their on the internet for free.

Yep they are around that size just a smidge thinner. My hair looks exactly like this at the moment.

I went to a consultant the first 2 retightenings just to be safe but after watching her in a mirror, I figured I could do it with one of these small yarn needles. I've also had a couple other sets of locs so I'm pretty quick with retightening using a 3 and 4 pt rotation.

plastic-yarn-needles.jpg

It took the consultant about 3 hours to do retighten. I had some slippage in the beginning bc I has hard headed lol. It was $775 to install and about $125 to retighten.

It takes me a week to retighten tho. I do 1 section for 1 hour every day every 4-6 weeks. I don't wait as long because my hair strands are really fine, grows fast and have a tendency to creep. I could marathon it, but I need to time to make sure the grid isn't compromised.

That's a good strategy. I'll try to see my future loctitian for at least the first 3 or 4 retightenings, and then hopefully maintain on my own. About that 3 or 4 pt pattern, I hear the 3 pt pattern creates fluffier looking locs while the 4 pt pattern gives them a more compacted/ropier look, do you have a preference? The 3rd and 5th picture of my last post (#8) is of a girl who uses 3 pt because she likes the fuzzy look. PR Charles (2nd pic) uses 4 pt. Also, do you do N-S-E-W or go in certain directions of a "clock"?

Sooo pretty...Whenever I see these I miss my locs.. :cry 512x512: but I can't imagine dealing with the length of time it takes to tighten these (and the cost). If anything i would just go back to locs that are the same width as my old ones.

I wish my mother would consider sisterlocs instead of the raggedy ass braids, twist, weave, relaxers etc. Nothing wrong with those styles but they aren't working for her. Sisterlocs look so dignified and classy on middle aged women.

I go counter clockwise just because the right side of my hair is fuller. Retightening that way helps since I usually place my part on that side plus the left side is sort of pulled closer to my face and isn't as flat. I use 3 pt for the front and my perimeter since the hair is looser and can look sparse if the loc is too compact. I use 4 pt for the middle of my head because it's ridiculously dense and has thicker strands so I feel like it can hold up better. They both look the same on my head. I do notice that the locs at middle of my head hold curls like a week or so more than the others but it could just be because of my styling choices:33:

I'm sure they still look great, just thicker! I wouldn't want to start over either especially if I've grown to love them.

I wish mine were smaller, but I don't want to start over :cry 512x512:

How long have you had your current set for? And I included some thicker/large sisterlock pics because there's beauty in all sizes :)

Not even a year yet, my hair was shoulder length before I locked

Now if I were you (and this is just my opinion that stems from the perfectionist in me lol, so take it with a grain of salt), I would just start over. Again, that's what I would do, I don't want to get in your head and make you feel bad about your current set, I don't even know what it looks like. But considering you're not even a whole year in and your hair was only shoulder length when you started them, I don't think it would be the biggest setback for you to cut the locs off and start over, at least not compared to someone who's been loc'd for a decade with hair down their back. You likely don't have much hangtime yet, right? So I'd rather start over early than feel stuck with a set of locs for years simply because I've already invested a bunch of time in them. I wouldn't be able to live with it. So if I were you and wasn't quite satisfied with the thickess of my locs, I would find a good consultant, show her my current gridwork and tell her I want a grid that results in thinner locs. Then cut it off, grow my hair to at least 3 inches and only spend ~$400 bucks for a new set that I can be comfortable with for the rest of my life

eta: and if a shorter length makes you feel self conscious, then you can wear a wig over your locs until they grow to a length you're comfortable with

I cut mine off about a year and a half ago. They kept breaking, and I was starting to thin on the edges because of the tension from retightenings. I loved the look, but I also didn't want to walk around looking like somebody snatched my edges either.

Hey ladies! :cheering:

I just wanted to come in the thread and thank OP for showing love to locs, especially sisterlocks/microlocks.

I also have sisterlocks, and I would highly recommend them to anyone interested in small locks. I agree with others that the cost can be outrageous. May I suggest going to a consultant for the install and a few reties then to start retie/interlock your own hair? That is what I did. My consultant was pissed, but she was too damn slow. I figured it was easy enough that I could retie it myself. She would take easily 10 whole hours!!! I know I have a lot of locs, but I heard of women getting it donenin 2 to 4 hrs, and this bish was at 10! Once I had to schedule two appointments in my busy work schedule because she couldn't finish in one day. So I had to come back. This happened twice l actually, just awful.

So now I do it on my own, and it is so easy. It is surely time consuming, and so hopefully you have Netflix to watch while you do it. It takes me somewhere around 16 hrs to finish. I usually split it up into a few days. Then, i dont have to worry.about my hair for 6 weeks.

I threw out ALL of my hair products when I got sisterlocs. All I have now is shampoo and castor oil. My hair looks gorgeous every day. I literally wake up with "bed hair" shake it/finger comb and be on my way, no spritz, oil, moisturizer, nothing!! I get compliments all of the time. NO MORE SHRINKAGE. NO more combing. No costly products. No more stretching and running away from water to keep a style. Life is good with locs.

I agree with poster before. I had traditional locs for about 22 years. I loved them but I wanted even less maintenance and smaller so I cut it all off to start sisterlocks 3 years ago and I absolutely love it. The pros are: I don't use products to maintain my hair -no more aloe vera gel to twist, I shampoo my hair twice a week and deep condition every two, I wake up with bed hair that look fabulous. I don't care if my hair gets wet. I could put my hair in so many styles like if I had loose hair. Some women even flatiron their sisterlocks which I have never done. I get so many compliments from men and women. Overall, It's been freedom for me. No more product junkie. The con could be the pricing depending on your pockets. I pay $135 every 6 to 7 weeks to get my hair retighten. I'm in her chair by 8am and I'm out by 12-1p. I will take a retightening class soon. Some of the women in those pictures above are some of my hair crushes. These are the ones I wanted to add.

Bumping this thread for updates in 2018. I made the decision to have sisterlocks by my 43rd birthday (next April). I’ve been natural since 2013 and have exhausted all protective styles and natural styles in this thick...4c, mid length shrinakble hair (lol). Everyone I have seen with sisterlocks are gorgeous and have witnessed their journey I think it’s time for a change and I’m ready!
