It's sad that this story sees Beyoncé and her guests as targets of disrespect, lack of privacy extended, ethnic slurs, and more.
Cliffs:
-Jay, Bey, and friends Jay & K brown were on a cruise along the Adriatic Sea and stopped over in Croatia.
-Guardian angel Julius accompanied them to provide security.
-Paps were overzealous and tailing Bey and Jay, even knocking into friends J & K Brown, when they were on their way back to the yacht after dinner.
-Julius kept cautioning the paps to move away and not run up behind him.
-Jay also got into defensive mode.
-After Bey and Jay boarded the dinghy, Julius pled with the paps to stop, but one of them threw a tripod at him and was yelling ethnic slurs at Bey & Jay. This is when Julius protectiveness increases.
-Julius proceeds to pass the tripod to the gods of the water.
-Julius gets arrested. They go to court for the charge. And then they paid the fine and left the country.
Jay-Z with Beyoncé and her bodyguard Julius de Boer, photographed as they walked along the waterfront in the Old Town section of Dubrovnik, Croatia on August 19, 2009. At the time the couple were on a five-day cruise of the Northeast of the Adriatic Sea, traveling on the $195,000-a-week Va Bene ("It's Good") megayacht owned by Eric Clapton.
The Netherlands native has been working to defend Beyoncé from impolite paparazzi and misunderstood fans since 2008. He was recommended to the couple by his Dutch forces mentor Norman Oosterbroek, who was the rapper's bodyguard from '06 until he was fired in '12. One of Julius' acclaimed abilities is he fluently speaks five languages to make international travel easier on him and his employers; but on this night, it wasn't so. Julius was tasked with supervising The Carters and their friends Jay and Kawanna Brown as they dined at the city's French fusion restaurant Gils. It was during this dinner that the couple were recorded by their friends intimately serenading each other with Coldplay's "Yellow," as seen in Bey's 2013 documentary Life is But a Dream.
An hour later the moment was tarnished as Julius clashed with overzealous paparazzi while the group made their way back to the yacht at 1:30 AM. The paps were knocking into Jay B and Kawanna as they walked while Julius flashed his light into their lens so they couldn't get a good shot of J+B. "Don't go running up behind me, don't ever do that," Julius was yelling at the tailing paps, while Hov warned him "Ju, if he ain't drop that camera I'm gonna fµck him up."
Eventually the group arrived at the dinghy waiting to take them to their yacht. In a last ditch effort for peace, Julius asked the following paparazzi "Why are you doing this?! We are just visitors here!" Jay called out to him to get on the boat, saying "c'mon, let's go, don't worry about it."
As the bodyguard boarded the boat, the pap he had the most-heated exchange with threw his camera tripod at him while he yelled out ethnic slurs at Jigga and Beyoncé. Julius spun around with fury in his eyes and proceeded to throw the tripod into the water while Jay worked to pull him back from doing so.
The dinghy sped off from the jetty, with Hov heard telling the group "I don't think we'll ever come here again." The marine police were informed about the incident, and they followed the Va Bene to its morning docking at private island off Korcula in Croatia. Julius was arrested and charged with assault and destroying the personal property of a photographer; while Hov and Beyoncé had their passports seized. On August 20 the bodyguard appeared in court and submitted a guilty verdict for the disruption of public order and peace, and was slapped with a $238 fine. The group left the country later that day.
