Texan lawmakers pass bill that will put the cost of Winter Storm Uri on consumers. A price of $2.5B to be added to electricity bills.

An approximately $2.5 billion plan to bail out Texas’ distressed electricity market from the financial crisis caused by Winter Storm Uri in February was approved by the Texas House Thursday.

The legislation would impose a fee — likely for the next decade or longer — on electricity companies, which would then get passed on to residential and business customers in their power bills. Lawmakers on Wednesday said they could not yet estimate how much it would impact Texans’ electricity bills.

I’m happy that other states aren’t having to pay bc Texas need to vote out their lawmakers or handle their own repercussions

Windmills freeze in cold weather and have to be replaced every few years. It’s stupid that a state swimming in dinosaur wine went all in on green energy, and look what happened. But all the California transplants in Texas will happily pay it.

Everything you posted is a lie and right wing propaganda with absolutely no facts to back it up.

We only have a handful of windmills in west Texas and only a few of them are online and running because that’s how little we take green energy seriously in this backwards ass state. Windmills barely count as 10% of our energy sources here

Windmills don’t freeze if they’re winterized to work in cold environments. The windmills in Alaska are proof they work in freezing weather. They only have to be replaced when they get damaged (which is rarely) and the ones we have in Texas froze because the folks in charge opted out of winterizing them to keep them from freezing because they didn’t want to spend the extra money that they clearly have.

By the way, cutting corners and not winterizing their energy sources is also how the nuclear plants and the gas power plants (our primary sources of power in Texas) iced up and shut down, and that’s how Texas ended up going offline.

They need to stop being greedy bastards, follow US regulations, and use their money to fix our outdated power grid. We tried to tell them after the last major ice storm back in 2011. They had an entire decade to fix this, but chose not to because “Texas doesn’t get cold weather”.

Reuters says it wasn’t ONLY windmills but also a failure to insulate natural gas pipes and the isolation of Texas’ electrical grid. Rep. Greene tweeted, “If passed, the Green New Deal will literally kill people. Millions of people have suffered in TX with #rollingblackouts & some died bc of reliance on ‘green’ energy. Increasing the use & banning the export of clean & plentiful reliabale (sic) natural gas for electricity is saving TX” (here). He was echoing the public statements of Gov. Abbott the previous day.

Maybe people moving to Texas for no state income tax and low cost of living need to figure out where the money for infrastructure will come from. Texans don’t want federal involvement.

For what it's worth... ALL the major cities in this big azs state are blue. Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Laredo, and El Paso.

It's these million+ lil one-horse town pockets of F-150 driving, tobacco spitting, good ole-boyz with stiff haired Karens at home that overwhelm any momentum this big ass state stolen from Mexico state has of turning blue...

Is this not what Texans wanted. They elected those people and they will gladly re-elect them. They are keeping their state safe from The 1619 Project, they deadly critical race theory (that no school is teaching and overall “wokeness” (blackness). That’s what Texans care about, not electricity nor higher power bills. You cannot put a price on protection from “wokeness.”

The very obvious point.

This could have been done 10 years ago.

Like they were told to.

The point of investing in infrastructure is because it's for future needs, not just current.

Texas couldn’t have anticipated 4 million people moving there over the past decade because blue states like California and New York were so dysfunctional. They’re victims of their success.

Wind is actually second behind natural gas. It’s around 25%. It just needs to be winterized.

Aww I’m sorry you feel that way. But maybe this is a sign to open up your horizons. I don’t have any suggestions on where to go. Good luck!

I’m not handling sh!t because I didn’t vote for the sh!t stains that ok’d this. The next winter storm will be like Katrina or Harvey all across the state. It will be more devastating than Uri. That maybe the only way for significant change. Or large business can speak with the same bass in their voice about this like they have about voter suppression.

I will absolutely run up to the capitol and protest. this is utter bµllsh!t. These are repercussions of white and Hispanic Texas voters & “they are all the same” clowns that were foisted on the rest of us. Ted Cruz defeated Beto by slim margins. Many congressional races saw republicans win by slim margins. The numbers are there to oust them but republicans are dead set on putting in hurdles to suppress the vote.

I said it in feb and I’ll say it again, these white and hispanic republicans will forget their asses were frozen with memaw and pawpaw damn near death, while having to use snow as water B/c of busted pipes. They will still vote abbot and the rest of his loons back in office. They will be more upset about culture war bµllsh!t instead of how the expenses of the winter storm will now be passed to the citizens.

Isn't the point of politics to plan ahead? They had 10 years to come with solutions to a problem that they dealt with before, but chose to ignore it. So what if Californians and new Yorkers are moving to the state, Texas is happily accepting the money they bring with them, no? They're okay with the prosperity they receive but can't rebuild the infrastructure to accommodate both their residents that were born and raised in the state and newcomers?

Then they can pay more for utilities. They’re already raising the prices of sales and property taxes. This is how it works. Businesses pass their operating costs onto consumers.

Ehhhh.

On the one hand you are correct, but we all know the most of the people who this is gonna hurt (Black and non Black POC) did NOT vote for these clowns. Hopefully by 2022, enough Californians/NYers will tip the scales.

Most of those blue areas are conservative though. Doesn't El Paso have a Republican mayor?

On a sidenote, Lubbock is the only city in America to have two competing electricity providers incidentally providing cheaper electricity as a result.
