People should tip if they dine out

germans Already knew about the difference for long time theybhave something called "trinkgeld" which is the change left over from the meal or beverage. The servers make a standard wage though and the theings are pricer there plus you don't get free refills on pop and such. Every country has different customs I don't know why people bring that up like it's some appalling thing

Why do anti-tippers have so much energy on these discussions? (This is not directed to OP) Just don't dine-in if you don't like tipping. It will do you so much better, and save you the hassle. The nerve of people to bring in historical history into the discussion, like they really care..:cautious:

I don’t think this information has anything to do with anti-tipping. The fact that black and women servers get paid less in tips constitutes a clear argument for an increase and minimum wage as it applies to service jobs if companies multi million dollar companies paid a fair wage tipping would be equal across-the-board, and servers another tip based occupations would benefit eventually closing the wealth gap.

I usually tip, and tip well. When I don't, it's because of the service and the attitude of the server. You're not going to have a preconceived notion of what you think I tip like simply for being Black, give poor service and/or be somewhat rude, and think you're going to get anything additional from me. It's not happening.

On the historical point, white people really did all they could to make Black people's lives miserable on all fronts. The effort they extended to place roadblocks at all turns just shows how determined they were and still are at maintaining their illegitimate race-based hierarchy.

Of course you should always tip a server but the bigger point is how ridiculous it is that servers aren't subject to minimum wage laws in 2021, we talk about raising the minimum to $15 and yet these men and women are still getting paid $2-4 an hour. It is sickening

Because usually people do this to justify not tipping. It’s basic manners to follow the custom of the country you are in. In Germany I’d follow their custom, like I do anywhere else

Again putting the german at the center of the conversation.... and ignoring the bigger picture. This is how big companies have been able to exploit workers... smh some people are extremely slow

Edited the OP because it is not about some German guy making a skit it is about restaurant owners refusing the pay ex slaves a decent wage after the civil war

Wow to the historical context! Let's not forget that's a watered down version of what they really went through (i.e. spit at, lied on, no tip given even when doing a superb job etc.).... Idgaf about the stereotype, if your service & attitude suck, you don't get isht from me!!

Employers should pay their employees living wages.

Some of you embody the sentiments of your oppressors. That’s why they continue to thrive because you’re defending and upholding their ideologies with every breath you have.

They don’t even value your breath nor thank you for your hard work. Instead they treat you like sh!t also, but you’re satisfied that it doesn’t stink as much as working for tips.

Ha!

People defend tipping because it makes people feel virtuous. Like they're being good people for tipping. If the minimum wage for food service workers went up to a good level and tipping were done away with that would eliminate that source of pride people have in themselves for tipping - that's why they want to keep it.

Makes perfect sense that American tipping would have evolved from underpaying Black (formerly enslaved) workers smh

"looked for ways to avoid paying formerly enslaved workers.”

This.

This right here defines the Black American existence in America. No other group has had this problem consistently throughout the existence of America and this attitude of sabotage plagues endeavors to this day. Just look at the unemployment rate and wage differential between races.

There's countries full of civilized human beings throughout the world that don't tip. They just pay their waitstaff properly.

Having the same energy towards the corporation (and please note many restaurants are small privately owned mom and pop restaurants) would mean boycotting and never dinning out at a sit down restaurants. Do you boycott sit down restaurants? If not your mentality is screw the wait staff not the corporation, because the restaurant is still getting paid since you paid for the food.

First of all I tip.... but crabs in a barrel like are the reason why the wages are so low to begin with. In race to the bottom. Fighting the symptom not the cause.
