Twitter is establishing a presence in Africa, with its Headquarters in Ghana

Twitter is building a team in Ghana.

To build this team Twitter is looking to hire specialists to join several teams while they also “explore the opportunity to open an office in Ghana in the future.”

The co-founder and CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey in a tweet announced the company’s presence on the continent.

In his response, Nana Akufo-Addo revealed that he held a virtual meeting with Jack on April 7, 2021.

He further revealed that Twitter’s Africa operations will have its Head Quarters in Ghana.

“The choice of Ghana as HQ for Twitter’s Africa operations is excellent news. Gov’t and Ghanaians welcome very much this announcement and the confidence reposed in our country.”

In a statement, Twitter indicated why it chose Ghana to host Africa’s Head Quarters.

“As a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom, and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate. Furthermore, Ghana’s recent appointment to host The Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa.”

“Whenever we enter new markets, we work hard to ensure that we are not just investing in the talent that we hire, but also investing in local communities and the social fabric that supports them. We have already laid foundations through partnerships with Amref Health Africa in Kenya, Afrochella in Ghana, Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) in Nigeria, and The HackLab Foundation in Ghana. As part of our long-term commitment to the region, we’ll continue to explore compelling ways we can use the positive power of Twitter to strengthen our communities through employee engagement, platform activation, and corporate giving,” it added.

I thought y'all were boycotting Ghana because of its anti-LGBTQ laws...

Why not South Africa? Anyways, This isn’t a good look at all. They want to spread their toxicity in the continent. What good is twitter/facebook/instagram really ? Just ppl being toxic, rampant pretending, decreased social interaction and mental illness. Obviously internet is already on the continent and access to these sites. I don’t know why they need a base there. It would have been better for an African to create a social network for Africans. These white corps are over there for their own interest which is usually not to the benefit of black people and culture.

I was gonna post. I'm late. That's cool I imagine we will see more companies follow suit. You know every major tech company has a branch office in Israel. There's no reason you can't have such a situation in Ghana or Nigeria for the matter.

Why it should be in South Africa ? I think is a good thing that big companies like Twitter are moving to other African countries like Ghana.

Because it’s already run by whites. Anyways, we have different perspectives. Generally I’ve noticed continental Africans are super pressed for white corporations and businesses to come built up Africa for them and to make it more “western” and miss the harmful implications of that. At some point we need to leave the colonized mindset and do for ourselves because with their businesses and corps they come with their racism and ws ideologies. You cannot separate the two.

South Africa = whites directly in charge. Like huh? I’m lowkey surprised they didn’t try to put it in Egypt or Morocco acting like that’s any type of win.

If you don't think it benefits the continent, then why should it be in South Africa? Or are you really trying to say you don't think Ghana is good enough? Lol

I feel like they need companies to invest in them and to bring jobs. China got big because it became a manufacturing hub for companies based all around the world. It is what it is. If Ghana does not find a way to bring jobs and money into the country, they will stay poor or not grow as quickly.

No you with your white worship and worship of all things white and white savior complex think I meant “ ghana is not good enough” when I’ve wrote two whole paragraphs clearly stating what I mean. And you still don’t get it. I’ve already said why they should’ve went down there to South Africa with the other white corporations that run things there. Ultimately what’s good for Africa is Native Africans developing Africa and creating companies and that benefit Africans and African culture. Clearly there’s a rampant thought where Africans don’t think they are good enough to build their own things.

By that logic, South Africa doesn't need more whiteness. Before we know it, it'll be a white man's country.

And let's see how this is operated. If it creates more jobs for Ghanaians and maybe even other Africans then I don't see the problem.

Africans can have their own things at the same time as this. Loads of companies have bases in different parts of the world but when run correctly, it doesn't compromise the people, the culture or their output.

I don’t agree with you. And that’s ok let’s agree to disagree.

How many “continental Africans “ do you know? Do they refer to themselves as “continental African”?

Corporations are there to make money. That’s their function. If you thought otherwise...
