Miss Honduras Maria Jose Alvarado Missing Ahead Of Miss World Pageant

AP 11/18/14 11:23 AM ET

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (AP) — Honduran authorities are holding four people for questioning about the disappearance four days ago of Miss Honduras 2014, Maria Jose Alvarado, police said Monday.

One of the detained, Plutarco Ruiz, is the boyfriend of Alvarado's sister, Sofia, 23, who also went missing with the beauty queen. Another being held is the owner of the business where the women disappeared, said police spokesman Lt. Joseph Coello, though he would not identify him.

"Initially we detained 10, but six have been released," Coello said.

The two women were last seen Thursday in a spa in Santa Barbara, about 240 miles (400 kilometers) west of Tegucigalpa, where they had gone to celebrate Ruiz's birthday. They have not been heard from since. Coello said the case is being treated as a disappearance because there has been no evidence of a kidnapping.

"Witnesses said my daughter left the spa with three men," her mother, Teresa Munoz, told reporters. "I tried repeatedly all night to call their cellphones without any response."

Chief prosecutor Gabriela Carranza said there are leads in the case that they can't discuss so as not to interfere with the investigation.

Alvarado, 19, was crowned Miss Honduras in April and is expected to compete in the Miss World Pageant in London next month. She was supposed to have left for London on Sunday.

Family make tearful plea for abducted Miss Honduras

Tegucigalpa (AFP) - The family of the reigning Miss Honduras pleaded with police to find their teenage daughter, who was abducted just days before she was set to fly to London for the Miss World contest.

Maria Jose Alvarado, 19, and sister Sofia Trinidad have not been heard from since they vanished Thursday outside the northern city of Santa Barbara, and all signs are that the siblings have been kidnapped.

"Days have gone by and we have not heard a thing. The police have to know something," said a tearful Teresa Munoz, their mother.

Alvarado had been set to travel to London on Wednesday for the Miss World competition.

The sisters disappeared after attending a birthday party for Sofia's boyfriend.

"The authorities just have to do their job better," their big sister Cori Alvarado told local media.

National police are working on several leads in the hunt for Alvarado, who is also part of a modeling reality show on Honduran television.

Honduras, an impoverished Central American country with eight million people, is statistically the most violent nation in the world.

The boyfriend did it? Is that confirmed or a guess?

The boyfriend of the sister was arrested according to this article:

The bodies of Miss Honduras, Maria Jose Alvarado, 19, and her sister were found Wednesday buried in a small mountain village, police officials said.
The reigning beauty queen and her sister, Sophia Trinidad Hernandez, 23, went missing last week only three days before they were to leave for London for the Miss World competition.
The pair had been attending a birthday party Thursday night in the resort city of Santa Barbara, about 120 miles northwest of the capital, Tegucigalpa. The bodies were found in the nearby village of Cablotales, near the River Aguagua.

Leandro Osorio, head of the National Directorate of Criminal Investigation, said two suspects, including the sister's boyfriend, were in custody, the newspaper La Tribuna reports. Weapons and a car allegedly used to transport the bodies were confiscated.

The newspaper La Prensa identified the suspects as Plutarco Antonio Ruiz, Sophia's boyfriend, and Aris Valentin Maldonado.
Osorio said the two women apparently were shot and killed Thursday night, not long after their abduction, and their bodies.
He said the beauty queen had been shot from behind and her sister shot from the front.
Police said the killers then went back and tried to clean up the crime scene.
The police official said a "protected witness" had provided valuable clues in the case.

Unofficial but Appears both shot same day they dissapeared
  • NEW: Miss World contestants will have service Sunday to honor the two victims
  • María José Alvarado Muñoz was set to head to London to participate in the pageant
  • A police patrolman says Alvarado and her sister were found dead
  • The two went missing last week, after reportedly getting into a vehicle

(CNN) -- A Honduran beauty queen who went missing just days before she was to participate in the Miss World pageant was found dead Wednesday, along with her sister, police said.

A patrolman from the Honduras National Criminal Investigations Office told CNN about the deaths of María José Alvarado Muñoz and her sister, Sofia Trinidad. Honduras National Police Chief Ramon Sabillon told CNN affiliate Televicentro that there is a 95% certainty that the bodies found Wednesday are those of the two women.

Alvarado went missing last Thursday, police in the Central American country said Sunday. Her family had reported the disappearance of Alvarado and her sister on Saturday.

Eduardo Zablah, director of the pageant in Honduras, told CNN affiliate Televicentro that Alvarado and her sister were last seen getting into a vehicle after attending a party last week.

The young woman was to be among the contestants from more than 120 countries who arrive in London this week for early rounds of the Miss World pageant. The final round is scheduled for December 14.

The 19-year-old student from Santa Bárbara, Honduras, beat 18 contestants to win the Miss World Honduras crown in April.
In her profile on the pageant's website, Alvarado described herself as "dedicated" and said she would someday like to go into government, specifically as a diplomat for her country.

She also said that she liked playing volleyball and soccer, eating Honduran food and performing the country's traditional punta dance.
Julia Morley, the chairman of the Miss World pageant, said contestants will hold a special service Sunday to honor Alvarado and her sister and offer prayers for their families.
"We are devastated by this terrible loss of two young women, who were so full of life," Morley said.

Lord have mercy!!! This poor family has to deal with the death of two members of the family. I can imagine they are inconsolable, especially the mother.

I kind of suspected they were dead; they'd been missing too long. This was no run of the mill person; it was a beauty pageant participant who was supposed to be leaving. Still, even with suspecting this, it is heart breaking and took my breath.

Maria Jose Alvarado Munoz and Sofia Trinidad, I speak your names. Rest in Peace. May your family's path to healing be smooth.

La Prensa newspaper reported that police were investigating whether Trinidad's boyfriend, Plutarco Ruiz, shot Sofia Trinidad in the head after he became jealous when he saw her dancing with another man. He then reportedly shot her beauty-queen sister twice in the back as she tried to flee.

Chief detective Leandro Osorio said the bodies of Maria Jose and her 23-year-old sister had been found buried along the banks of the Aguagual River in the town of Arada, in violence-plagued Honduras's northwest.
"We are 100 percent sure that it's them," Osorio said.

Police arrested Ruiz and his alleged accomplice on Tuesday, seizing a Colt-45 pistol and two vehicles.

This is politically incorrect to say, but the beauty queen herself and her own sister are partly responsible for their unfortunate demise. For one thing, why was the sister involved with a man from an infamous family with known drug trafficking ties? Why was Miss Honduras also associated with such a man (because she surely knew about his local infamy, and yet still chose to attend his parties)? Knowing this info, why was the sister (allegedly) dancing with another man at her drug-dealer boyfriend's own party, which (allegedly) kicked off the boyfriend's jealous rage? Also, the sister has a history of getting with foul men:

While Alvarado pursued her dream [of becoming Miss Honduras], and her oldest sister married and moved away. She was a teacher until the school where she worked closed, and in love with a married man who left his wife to be with her, before he was murdered in October 2013.

Sofia's new boyfriend Ruiz was known about town as a man to be feared from a family deeply involved in drug trafficking, officials say. Although he had no police record, he was seen as someone who could offer protection or eliminate enemies.

'This is a drug trafficking corridor,' said Lt. Col Ramon Castillo, an army officer in charge of security in Santa Barbara.

'David Ruiz, Plutarco's brother was 'the bull' and when he was killed in February, Plutarco took his place. ... Plutarco is a violent person with a bad character and he solves everything with a pistol in his hand.'

Police say Ruiz shot Sofia because she was dancing with another man. After a fierce argument, he pulled out a pistol and fired at Sofia first, then Maria as she tried to flee.

It's now being said that Maria (the beauty queen) was shot as she shielded her older sister's body, to try to get the boyfriend to stop.

This is not to say that the killer isn't primarily responsible (he's still 80%+ responsible). However, the beauty queen and her older sister's actions unfortunately led to their own deaths. Had they exercised better judgment, Miss Honduras would now be in London preparing for the Miss World competition and not be six feet under. While men must certainly exercise better judgment n the anger management front and not kill so much, women must also exercise better judgment regarding their associates and lovers.

I don't agree with this. It is not their fault they were killed.

Like I said, the primary (80%+) of the blame goes to the killer himself. However, the young women exercised very poor judgment (20% of the blame).....which unfortunately put them in a position to be murdered:

(1) the older sister (a confirmed ho, since she was previously with a married man....likely also a drug dealer, since he was killed last year) willfully getting with the killer, who hails from a prominent local drug-kingpin family;

(2) Miss Honduras willfully associating with known drug thugs, via her sister's boyfriend...choosing to go to a drug kingpin's party even though she has an image to presumably protect;

(3) the older sister choosing to dance with another man at her drug-kingpin boyfriend's birthday party, knowing that he's a violent man given his widespread local reputation.

When you associate with drug thugs, then don't be surprised at any outcome. Had they exercised better judgment regarding their associates (and in the older sister's case, regarding her boyfriend), they'd likely still be alive.

Shame to see women putting the blame on other women, I recently listened to a podcast about how in latin and central america, especially in areas where women have easier access to menial jobs vis-á-vis young men who are 'forced' into the gang life, there has been an alarming rate of STRUCTURAL assasinations/killings in order to a) KEEP the women afraid aka- know your place, you could go missing/dead/raped any moment b) re-instate their perceived masculinity. it wasnt some bµllsh!t podcast either, it was from London School of Economics on the fallacy of war from a feminist perspective or something. it shook me, I always wondered why places like juarez had such an alarming high rate of murders directed at women, and the professor broke it the fµck down. smh. men are beasts.

Wow. Not a good look for Honduras at all. I wonder if the boyfriend ever got sentenced. They said his brother got killed. Her married ex got killed. Well damn.
I assume the women came from dry humble beginnings, and these cartel ninjas seem irresistible in the moment.

Girl, shut up. All those paragraphs trying to justify a stupid opinion.

I hope everyone reads this delusional crap. This is the sh!t women deal with, even in death--getting blamed for the actions of an abusive man.
