'People just want their mail on time': USPS is slammed for boasting of $6B hybrid truck upgrade - amid chronic package delivery delays
  • The U.S. Postal Service announced on Tuesday that has reached a deal on a multi-million-dollar hybrid upgrade on its trucks
  • The initial $482 million contract went to Oshkosh Defense
  • The full contract could be worth more than $6 billion in total
  • It comes as U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy told lawmakers on Wednesday that mail system is losing $10 billion a year
  • Customers were angered that the upgrade is going ahead despite the losses
  • 'People just want their mail on time,' angered users said on social media
The U.S. Postal Service has been hit with a wave of criticism after it announced a multi-million-dollar hybrid upgrade on its trucks despite delays in delivery times and loss in revenue.

The agency revealed on Tuesday that it has awarded a $482 million contract to Oshkosh Defense to finalize production for the next-generation postal vehicles, with the first new trucks expected to hit the roads in 2023.

The contract, which could be worth more than $6 billion in total, allows for delivery of between 50,000 and 165,000 of the vehicles over 10 years, which will be a mix of internal combustion-powered and battery-electric vehicles.

The deal was developed with the aim of reducing its costs and to transition away from greenhouse gas-emitting technologies to cleaner solutions.

However, customers were angered by the money being spent on the upgrade instead of ensuring that mail is delivered on time.

The upgrade comes as U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy told lawmakers on Wednesday that U.S. mail system is losing $10 billion a year and urgently needs reform and legislative relief from Congress.

'Ppl just want their mail on time. USPS, y'all really think ppl care what you deliver the mail in?' Twitter user Shannon Sharpe asked when the new truck design was announced.

Another user named Caleb Hull added: 'Everyone: stop losing our packages and costing us billions every year. Usps: introducing our new clown car'.

'They just need to start focusing on delivering s**t ON TIME lol I swear my packages are always late,' hit out @IsaacIniguez.

Others questioned where the USPS received the money for the upgrade asking, 'I thought y'all were broke?' and 'isn't the USPS in massive debt … always having the get bailed out?'

'Meanwhile I've been waiting on a key for our mailbox for two months now,' joked another Twitter user.

'USPS NEEDS TO UNVEIL MY MAIL,' wrote @SoloLeveling.

User Ben Cornelius said he didn't care if the new trucks were 'ugly or sleek'.

'I just expect 1st class mail from my doctor's office 5 blocks away in less than 7 and 8 days, from Atlanta in less than 10 days, and 2-day Priority Mail from Peekskill in less than 5 days,' he wrote.

'It doesn't need to be sleek and cool,' another user agreed of the design.

'It needs to be able to carry a lot of mail, be fuel efficient, and have a low grille with good visibility so letter carriers won't be at risk of running over children. Check, check, check.'

Oshkosh Defense, a division of Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Corp., will assemble 50,000 to 165,000 of the new Next Generation Delivery Vehicles at its existing U.S. manufacturing facilities, USPS said Tuesday.

It described the deal as the first part of a multibillion-dollar 10-year effort to replace its delivery vehicle fleet, part of an effort to make the USPS more environmentally friendly by switching a portion of its huge fleet to electric vehicles.

The vehicles will be a combination of electric and gasoline powered, but the gasoline-powered new vehicles will have the ability to be retrofitted with new electric systems in the future.

USPS also revealed a look at the new trucks which will have more room for packages and will be updated with modern safety and drivability standards like cameras, airbags, and collision avoidance systems.

They also include a waste-high front hood that resembles the front beak of a duck in front of an extra-high windshield.

It marks the first change for the iconic Grumman LLV mail truck that has been in use since the late 1980s.

Yet customers were also less than impressed by the new design.

'Who made this vehicle? Pixar?' asked user Tyler David

'I drew cars like this when I was 9,' joked Casey Evan.

39731140-9296705-image-a-8_1614203697762.jpg

Social media users also joked about the design of the new hybrid trucks

39731132-9296705-image-a-9_1614203705430.jpg

Another user Kyle Swawayama compared it to an episode of The Simpsons as he wrote: 'idk sorta reminds me of the car build for homer'.

'USPS took all the money they used to spend on sorting machines and put it into reducing air resistance, so your mail will be two weeks late but one minute early,' added @Jrehling of the new design.

The postal service last updated its mail-delivery trucks 30 years ago, and there have been major changes in the service's operations since then.

Traditional mail volumes have declined, while the service now delivers millions of packages from online retailers like Amazon that did not exist when the previous mail vehicle was introduced.

The upgrade comes as DeJoy admitted the mail system is losing $10 billion a year.

'I would suggest that we are on a death spiral,' DeJoy told the U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform committee at a hearing Wednesday, who did not rule out changing first-class deliver standards or other significant changes.

U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, left, unveils the new hybrid trucks on Tuesday

DeJoy, a supporter of former President Donald Trump appointed to head the Postal Service last year, suspended operational changes in August after heavy criticism over postal delays.

He plans to release a new 10-year strategic 'break-even' plan soon.

Delays in paychecks and other mail deliveries by the Postal Service, or USPS, gained attention this summer as a record number of voters mailed in ballots to elect a new president.

Last month, President Joe Biden vowed to replace the U.S. government's fleet of roughly 650,000 vehicles with electric models.

And on Wednesday, DeJoy told lawmakers on Wednesday the Postal Service was committed to having electric vehicles make up 10 percent of its next-generation fleet.

Some environmental advocates criticized the USPS decision not to buy an all-EV fleet after tge announcement Tuesday.

Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union, had urged Congress to give the USPS a 'modernization grant' of $25 billion to make 'long-overdue' investments in a clean postal fleet, electric-vehicle charging stations for local post offices and other improvements.

Yet the choice of Wisconsin-based Oshkosh is a big miss for Ohio-based electric vehicle startup Workhorse Group, which put in an all-electric bid for the vehicles.

DeJoy said the USPS had agreed to spend $500 million on the next-generation vehicles to make them convertible to EVs from internal-combustion models at a future date. 'Every vehicle could be converted to electric,' DeJoy said.

Shares of Workhorse fell more than 47 percent Tuesday after the USPS award to Oshkosh Corp, which was up 4.4 percent.

Workhorse said on Wednesday it had it had requested more information on the decision.

This is stupid. They could have used this money to pay current staff and bring on more staff so that people can get their sh!t. Last year my mail was getting delivered once or twice a week.

At this USPS is Block Buster. They think they’d too big to fail that’s why they make moves like this. I doubt they’ll last another 5 years due to their piss poor judgment.

Why is Lovejoy still in that job anyway? He should have been fired January 21st. Someone better go over this contract with a forensic view. What the hell is Oshkosh Defense? I thought OshKosh made kids clothes. Is the head of the company named Ronald Crump?

All I can think about is Oshkosh B'gosh. Like babies out here delivering the mail? :ROFLMAO:

I kid, but seriously, who's got the intel on this company? DeJoy and Trump got stock in it or something?

This is just one of those things that even though it doesn't matter to you it matters to someone else. If it's true that the trucks that are in current use has no A/C or heat new trucks would be something I think is essential.

Also new trucks might be the most economically prudent move? I mean I don't know the expenditure of having to repair their existing fleet. (Though they should look into another design of the new trucks)

This Country has to stop letting things get to the point of complete and utter disrepair. Tackling the serious infrastructure problem this Country faces and the expenditure that will come with it is gonna have a lot of people  but it's needed.

Maybe had they fixed things in increments along the way instead letting things become so decrepit then pulling the Band-Aid off ($$$$) wouldn't hurt has much as it's going too.

That's assuming they would actually tackle the fact that this Country is being held together by a thin rope.

An USPS worker has died of hyperthermia in CA because of an heatwave. The current trucks don't have AC and due to their age, are prone to caught fire.

They should've put that money towards investigating all the packages that are "lost" (STOLEN) under their supervision...

They needed an upgrade. I feel so bad for the mail carriers having to drive those raggedy trucks with no air and heat. Maybe the mail will be delivered on time now.

The upgraded trucks are needed but it is frustrating to see when so many other things are also a priority.

This, 100%. The current trucks are nothing but tin cans with wheels and an absolute hazard in extreme temperatures.

People in this country love to complain about poor infrastructure, poor quality services, etc. but when it comes time to fix it, suddenly there’s a problem and it’s not worth it.

But the postmaster general cannot be removed by a president. That power lies with the Postal Service's governing board -- whose six sitting members were all appointed by President Trump as a result of a Republican-controlled Senate blocking a slate of President Barack Obama's nominees.

Controversial postal chief poised to remain in Biden administration

I don't know if he can even appoint new members to the board.

Actually he can appoint 3 people to the board. Per the article:

Biden will come into office with the option to fill the remaining three seats on the board. Congressional aides and industry leaders said that if Biden can quickly appoint politically aligned governors to the board, they could tip the scale and remove DeJoy.

I'm not mad at the upgrade. They need something new. The PO wouldn't have so much debt if they could raise prices and charge closer to how much a package actually cost to ship. John Oliver did a whole video on it and their debt is because of Congress.

So why couldn't they just buy some trucks that already exist with A/C and heat and doors. Amazon has trucks like this, Uhaul has small trucks... I'm sure I've seen other delivery companies with small trucks.

Why DESIGN a new truck that is ugly when they could just buy a fleet of something that already exists and works for many other companies.

To give contracts to preselected companies (aka their friends) like @Haitian1 said. But also because the current trucks they use are all around poorly designed. I really don’t understand how or why they came to be in the first place. Also, it’s not about looks, but functionality. Unlike fedex/ups, the usps trucks need to be able to stop at mailboxes. Idk if there is something already available that meets those requirements.

Rip to the deceased, but I don’t think the age of the vehicles have anything to do with why our mail is consistently delayed. Two separate issues. Those vehicle should have been equipped with A/C and heat a long time ago. This is true. Are they capable of upgrading the vehicles and delivering our mail on time? We shall see.

Did the put those sorting machines back or are they gone?

This thread is weird. USPS is overwhelmed. Like that cannot be stressed enough. I see people mentioning Amazon trucks but uhhh, Amazon gets USPS to deliver their sh!t all the time lol.

"How dare they get livable working conditions and still deliver my mail late?!"

It simply doesn't make sense. This was something long overdue and that needed to get done.

The next thing on the list needs to be BETTER AND MORE pay for the workers AND actually hiring MORE workers. Give people incentives so they want to work there! The reason ppl's mail and sh!t is late because they are severely underpaid and overworked.

I know the pandemic has hit them hard but I was in the post office for 35 mins with my brother for his passport application because there was only one worker at the window..on a Monday morning. Are they on a hiring freeze? If not then they have bigger issues at hand but..yes let’s upgrade all the cars.

It’s not just a hiring freeze, if they have one, it’s a be working conditions. It’s hot or cold as hell, the vehicles don’t offer any protection against the elements and then you have people bitching because their big booty bandits magazine hasn’t come on time. Then you have people that can do the simplest sh!t but need to be handheld through it in line at the post office. We literally have a self service machine at my post office. The line for the person be long as hell and no one in the self service.

This isn’t true. Especially if the cars were developed specifically for the usps. Right now we can buy humvees for the military and not have ac.

I mean the worker said himself that they are severely understaffed so any other reason is just speculation. Also, I only go to the post office if I absolutely have to and none near my house have self service kiosks.

People are paying for services like 2 day Prime shipping but it’s turning into 4-5 days because of USPS. I would be annoyed too, regardless of what I ordered. Luckily I don’t order anything I absolutely need because of this

Luckily I don’t order anything I absolutely need because of this
You go to the post office only when needed but there are plenty of people who go for the simplest things. Also everything don’t need to be two day but it’s gotten to the point where some people want everything the second they order it. Even Amazon isn’t equipped to send their stuff in two days in a lot of cases.

I’m not mad at the upgrade, I just want DeJoy gone, then we can start working towards fixing the problem because let’s not pretend that republicans didn’t create a lot of the problems. This is an infrastructure investment which is a good sign. Let these people have their updated trucks so that more people see being a carrier as a good profession and not one that puts you in danger over something like a hot summer day.

I didn't know any of that so thank you. If the workers needed new trucks then they definitely should have comfortable working equipment so I'm not mad at that. But I don't trust Lovejoy and anything he puts his name on regarding money needs to be fully vetted, re-vetted, double-vetted and then one more time before passing. Hopefully they can find a way to remove his power if not remove him.
