If Olivia Pope is any indication, we have a feeling that Annalise Keatings (Viola Davis) wardrobe on How To Get Away With Murder will start to get noticed as well. And judging from the first few episodes (body-conscious dresses, fitted leather, nonexistent suits), Annalises fashion mirrors her personality: dark, mysterious and sultry. We recently spoke with Linda Bass, costume designer for How To Get Away With Murder, on selecting Annalise and the rest of the casts looks on the show and what we can expect from the rest of the season (she was pretty tight-lipped!)
In the meantime, were excited about to see what else is in store for Annalise and the rest of the cast as their characters (and closets) develop.
StyleBlazer: Annalises outfits were pretty fitted and sexy in the premiere. What else will see from her wardrobe this season?
Linda Bass: I didnt do the pilot episode but I did the rest of the season. The wardrobe is story driven. Annalise is pretty provocative and powerful. If her wardrobe changes, its because her story changes. Viola will never wear a suit and blouse! Shes a little more powerful.
SB: How do you ensure that the looks fit Annalises personality as well as her profession?
LB: I always read the script and meet with the creator. Well discuss where she [Annalise] is in the scene. Its really story driven.
SB: Do you work closely with the makeup and hair team to ensure her beauty looks complements her outfits? Which is usually decided first?
LB: The wardrobe fitting is first, and then hair and makeup does their thing. I try to let hair and makeup have complete ownership but if I think something doesnt work hair or makeup wise, I will suggest making changes.
SB: Will Annalises wardrobe evolve over the season and if so, how?
LB: It will definitely change as the plot changes. Stay tuned!
SB: What is the best part about dressing Annalise and the rest of the cast for a new show? Whats the most difficult?
LB: The best part is developing the characters through their costumes. The men and women have distinct, independent looks. For example, youll never see Michaela [Aja Naomi King] wearing what Laurel [Karla Souza] would wear, or vice versa. There also has to be a balance so the wardrobe doesnt overpower the acting. The only challenge is getting everyone together for a fitting.
SB: Youve worked on Shondas team before for Greys Anatomy and Private Practice. Is that how this gig came about? What do you like best about working for Shonda?
LB: I met Shonda for the first time when I worked on season one of Greys Anatomy. Shonda is so strong, smart, definitive and loyal. Plus, I love reading her scripts. Id work on anything Shonda does. Id move heaven and earth to work with Shonda.
SB: Who do you think are the best dressed characters on TV? Any character youd love to dress one day?
LB: I love what [costume designer] Lyn Paolo is doing on Scandal. And then theres The Good Wife. Id have loved to work with Carrie Bradshaw.
SB: Anything else youd like to share about what we can expect this season?
LB: It just gets better. Its an incredibly intriguing, twisty mystery that gets better each week.
