Was “... Baby one more time” supposed to be an R&B song?

I think I read it was supposed to be for TLC.

I wonder what it would had originally sounded like if it went to them?

Cant picture it being a tlc song. It's not a corny song in general but i think it would have been kind of corny coming from them

If it was they rightfully passed on it, doesn’t really suit their style.

I just read about the songwriter of this song, seeing as he's the same songwriter who wrote the "I Want it That Way" with BSB. Max Martin is Swedish so the way he covered lyrics in English has a missing component of sense like an incomplete thought.
He thought "Hit" meant to call someone, which it does when it's said as "Hit me up" or "Hit me later", but he took it as the word alone conveying that and came up with Hit Me Baby One More Time.

Same deal with BSB's song. I always thought it didn't make sense, saw the video, and confirmed my suspicions of foreigner writing it, but I didn't know it was the same guy lol
I was more amazed at how music can NOT make sense, a lot of people know it doesn't, yet still be so popular. Like success is really in the effort.

But I like a couple of artist that don't speak English entirely correct and their songs knock! It's amazing to me. Some things just don't have to make sense.

At the end of the day, the music video is what blew everything up.

The main mistake made in 1999 was the Rolling Stone shoot. That should have never happened.

It works though.

although I never understood it as “hit me up” or call me up.

I thought it just meant take a chance on me one more time.

although maybe only a foreigner could make that song happen...

In terms of early Britney, her corniest from her first album was “Sometimes”

I like “Lucky” but if Britney Spears didn’t sing that song, it would had been corny. She gave it a hidden layer of meaning that the lyrics don’t have...

Also Born To Make You Happy which sounds to me like “I was boring to make you happy”

I like that song but it was corny too... same with bottom of my broken heart.

The whole album was corny besides ‘baby one more time’ and ‘drive me crazy’. And that was more because of the times, if ‘drive me crazy’ came out today it would be ridiculous. No artist today could make that song work in the clubs.

In my opinion it sounds like something from TLC's first album or someone trying to write something for their first album. T boz on the verses and chilli on the chorus I can definitely hear it but not in 1999

Well the way Britney Spears "sang" it was kind of deep like T-Boz. Add more bass/drum machine; take out the bass guitar and that fake piano. Have Left Eye write a verse.

Play with it like Silly Ho for that Fan Mail sound.

"No Scrubs" is a corny song when you think about it, but TLC (Chilli) killed it.

Rainy Dayz was for TLC too but that's more obvious.

This was the original What's Love Got to Do With It:

Then Tina got it, and they changed up subtle things about the background music and brought Tina's charisma and she slayed it.

It’s hard to imagine cause I couldn’t find anything remotely similar to TLC on YouTube

I think it would had sounded more like this

The question is Max Martin producing or Dallas Austin?

Dallas Austin would have completely changed it up. The biggest problem with the song is those lyrics; they are simple and repetitive. But again, so is No Scrubs. They probably would have changed the title and chorus. Sexed it up. And put Left Eye on there.

I can picture it as a smooth jazz slowed down Will Downing type song or a good older style real R&B crooner like Luther song.
