I was watching Straight Outta Compton the other day and was thinking about the scenes in the movie with Tupac. Even though he's now been dead for two decades it seems like his legacy is still going strong. I was just curious if Tupac was popular in the Caribbean when he was still alive. Or did he become popular after death?

Do any of you have memories of Tupac while he was alive? Did he ever do shows anywhere in the Caribbean? I'm not aware of him doing any shows outside the United States during his lifetime.

Not really. I don't think he's popular now in the Caribbean.

My uncle was a huge fan, California love is one of the first songs I remember from a young age because he kept replaying it on cassette tape. I remember how sad him and my family were when he was killed as well. I don't know if I'll say he's huge but he's known.

When I vacationed in Jamaica around 2015, some of the residents told us they still listened to Pac.

You know this makes me wonder why some of the biggest rap artists of that era weren't as big in the Caribbean. Maybe it's because they didn't tour down there.

Was MTV a thing in the Caribbean in the 90s?

It's really hard to tour the Caribbean outside of a few bigger countries because we can't really afford to host big names like that tbh. He's known on my island especially with the rise of hip hop down here.

Regarding MTV, I was really little so I don't remember if it was. I don't think we had much american stations back then like we do now.

Yea I don't even think Michael Jackson or Prince went to the Caribbean back in the day. I think MJ toured in Mexico City and Brazil sometime in the 90s but don't think he made it to anywhere in the Caribbean.

I can only speak of Jamaica. What do you mean by popular? Would some people know him, yes but, is he as celebrated or listened to compared to our own local artist, no.

Jamaica has Reggae and Dancehall music so rap is not something we consume a lot of.

Yeah just wondering if Tupac is as revered and listened to in the Caribbean as he is here.

Sometimes I wish rap wasn't as popular in America because it's taking over all genres of music these days and it's getting old....

Michael went to Jamaica one time I believe and took a pic with Bob Marley in his younger days.
I can't upload the other pic as it is too large but these were taken at Bob's house in 1975.

But to answer your question OP, no for Pac. I can only speak on Jamaica though. Everything was mainly East Coast for JA in that time so if you never come from that part at that time, sorry fi yuh unless you reached global stardom. His popularity slowly grew after his death though but not to the heights of Biggie for JA.

I guess with Biggie's mom being from there it would contribute to his popularity above Tupac whereas in California Tupac is a legend.

The J5 came to Trinidad in the late 70s but Tupac isn’t that popular here, some people like rap/hip hop like me but I always preferred Biggie, Jay Z, Naz, Mos Def etc, not into the California stuff like my sister. To be honest I was more into rap a child in the 80s and 90s but I think ‘gansta rap’ turned off a lot of people and the love never returned…
