What is this food called? Put the name of your country next to it. A few answers in the spoiler.

Just wanted to point something out.

This is more of a sugary trait... it has a different name where I'm from but like a font stated, these are fried donuts.

While this is more on the salty side, a different snack but this would be "pholouri", better known as an Indian dish (where I'm from)

Acarra in Sierra Leone. I doubt I spelled it correctly, but yeah.

Ours tend to be darker and usually paired with a pepper and onion sauce.

Sis, it’s not akara. That’s why it’s not as dark. It’s a sweet snack. There are different names for it in WA like puff puff, beignet, donut etc.. I know akara too but that’s not what’s in the pic. Akara is made from beans but this one is made from flour.

I'm talking to my mom right now who is Sierra Leonean. Sierra Leone has bean akara and akara like the other font mentioned and in the picture. We would call that puff puff or akara.
My mom said that bean akara is not as common in Sierra Leone as it is in Nigeria.

I was thinking “isn’t Akara from beans??”. I remember my mom making Akara and Akam.

Okay I looked up the proper spelling. It's "Akara." I was wayyyy off lol.

This is completely different sis. Akara is made with peeled beans. Akara is more similar to moi moi. This one (which I personally call puff puff) is bakery- flour, sugar etc but it’s still fried.

Okay, I think I got confused because my grandma makes them out of flour and her and all my other fam still call it Akara. Perhaps Sierra Leoneans use the name for both? Idk lol

Oh ok. Do you mean that there are two different types of akara? One made from beans and another made from what?

It’s not a west African thing lmao. I saw someone asking on IG and I found the answers interesting. I know most of the names in East Africa:

Ethiopia - Pasti
Kenya/Tanzania - Mandazi
Somalia- Bur
Sudan- Legeemat

You're not wrong.. we eat both bean akara and the akara you described. I would say that the akara we typically eat is the sweeter kind than the bean akara.

Yeah one that is bean akara and one that is the sweeter flour akara. Honestly, Sierra Leoneans use it interchangeably.

I grew up in a Sierra Leonean household too and we knew them as Akara or my dad would call them biscuits lol.
