I want to insure my cat but I'm new to buying pet insurance. How much does it generally cost? And what should I look for in a policy?

I was just looking at pet insurance today through Lemonade. My quote was $76 for emergencies alone.

I've had a Banfield Wellness plan for the last 2 or 3 years. The reviews are so, so, but I've had a good experience with them personally. I first started going to the one in PetSmart, but I didn't like it because they always wanted me to drop my dog off and I would never get a chance to speak to the vet, they always sent out a technician. However, I found a location (not in a PetSmart) that operates like a normal vet and I like them a lot.

Other chains, like VCA, have chains as well, but I've also seen them at non-chain vets. My plan is $55 a month.

My breeder said healthy paws is one of the best insurance for pets. It’s exactly number 1 for pet insurance. Embrace and Trupanion are also good insurance as well.

I'm looking at pet insurance too for my cat. I need both wellness, illness, and accidents covered.

I have Trupanion and Pumpkin. I think I’m going to cancel Trupanion because you have to pay a deductible per illness first before they cover anything. My deductible is $250 and monthly payment is $38. Pumpkin has an annual deductible and it’s about the same monthly payment.

I really only need it for emergencies or expensive illnesses. I can pay out of pocket for all the other stuff.

Last time, it was something like $20, but I ended up not getting it. ^ For $38 I'd put the money in my own savings account until a certain amount is saved. That's a lot a year when you add in that deductible. I'd be able to save that and exceed it pretty quickly, just setting aside a little each month. Usually insurance policies have a time where you can get certain things done, anyway, and in that time, I can already have saved a nice amount, just in case.

I have Petplan for my cats and I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, they've always paid out quickly without arguing, and vets trust them so you can often claim directly through my vet. This year I had a big claim cos my cat needed surgery on a damaged wrist joint (do cat have wrists? Front ankle?) and they had to put some metal in so the bones would rejoin properly. Surgery costs add up FAST, then there's the x-rays to follow up, and so on. Petplan did pay out and quickly. But I also have a complaint about them - when we'd been with them several years they snuck a little clause into the small print that you now have to pay the first 20% or something on claims - a cost share. Now granted, I should have read the small print, and maybe they did draw attention to something in an email and I just wasn't paying enough attention, but I feel like they snuck that in there hoping a lot of people wouldn't notice - and I didn't.

But what happens if your pet needs surgery or cancer treatments which can costs thousands of dollars? I’m not taking that much out of my emergency savings. I don’t want to decline treatment either.

Exactly! Like this year my cat dislocated her wrist in such a way that was very painful and she couldn't walk on it. The bones weren't naturally going to grow together but there's a surgery that fuses the bones with a plate, so she lost some flexibility in the joint and tends to hold the wrist up and straight when she's not using it, but she has no pain, and can use it great, she can run, climb, jump, and do everything she did before. She can even flex the toes. Surgery is EXPENSIVE, particularly with an orthopedic specialist (an amazing Black guy, btw. I love our vet). Without insurance my options would have been to decimate my savings or have my healthy cat PTS for a wrist injury.

I know this is an old thread but I'm looking into pet insurance and I wanted to know for those who have had to use it...do you pay the cost upfront if your pet gets sick or does the insurance company pay for you after the vet sends them the bill?

I use lemonade and Embrace.

I cant complain about any of them as they are both pretty decent.

Embrace cost more though.
Embrace is about 60ish while Lemonade is about 40-50ish

I have Nationwide, it covers wellness vet visits, medications, emergency visits/accidents, spaying and neutering and a few other things. I get a discount through my job so I think I pay like $63/month for one dog.

I researched several companies before going with Nationwide before I found out my job gives a discount. There are a lot of companies that cover wellness visits but the typically cost $70+ per month.

Pets are so expensive
