I'm just another person trying to figure out what to do with my hair and I've accumulated a lot of products. I don't want to be wasteful by throwing them out, but I'm trying to clean up and get rid of excess stuff I have. I've already given some to my family but still have a lot left over.

What do you all do with products you don't like or care about anymore? Do you feel guilty throwing them out?

I bought so many hair products when I first went natural in '13. When I moved from my mom I left a lot of stuff and never came back. So when I helped her clean all of it was expired. I think I threw out everything except the heat protectant. Unless I forgot and rebought it. If it's expired I feel bad that I haven't used it. I remember my MIL gave me some hair growth oil that was like 8 yrs old saying "it's still good." lol. You know old heads don't think nothing expires lol.

If you opened it and it is past 24 months please throw it away. some of those products can damage you hair/skin when the ingredients go bad. My husband has been using old Cantu products and asked me why his hair was frizzy. Sigh....

If they're not expired/gently used, a lot of women's shelters/domestic violence shelters have a shortage of hair care products designed for black women and are actively looking for them. Search around your area to see if they're accepting them

You can also give them away in buy nothing/free facebook groups. Just be honest about their condition

I just toss it. It hurts though because I’ve spent ALOT of money on products that didn’t work.

Great question OP and thank you to all who answered. I was wondering the same thing. I really hate to discard them, yet it seems like the best option, though it's like seeing money going down the drain.

I normally give them away to people that I know that need them, but I never thought of giving them to a women’s shelter.

if it's not expired i repurpose it.
if it's a conditioner, deep conditioner, rinse out conditioner, leave in conditioner - it will be repurposed into either of the aforementioned products or a prepoo or a detangler
some conditioners/leave ins/rinse outs/deep conditioners/prepoos/detanglers/hairmilks can be turned into body lotions i got that from a font on this board

but yeah i don't really throw anything out it can all be repurposed or the performance boosted with any combination of oil, honey and/or molasses.

If the products have quite a bit of time before they expire I'll send an email to friends/family letting them know wha products I have available.

If I've had them for too long I throw them away.

I use them on my wig. I refuse to buy special wig products.

I can use up any mediocre conditioner by adding it into my deep conditioning blend.

I also put aside specific products (conditioners, shampoos, oil, etc.) to use when the toilet gets clogged.
You just put a generous amount in the bowl, add a few potfuls of hot water, sometimes plunge to push everything down to where the clog is, and it gets rid of it fast.

Leave-in conditioners and moisturizers, I use up on pre-moisturizing braiding hair before installing it. This works especially well for the kinkier, coarser kinds of braiding hair, makes them way more pliable and easy to work with. And they tend to drink up product, so it's a fast way to get through the stuff. I also use them as a supplementary moisturizer for my hair while in braids.

If I can't use the product for any of the above, I just suck it up and throw it in the trash.
I hate to waste product too, but the momentary pain is worth the relief of having junk out of your house lol.
I comfort myself by emptying the contents in the sink and at least recycling the container.

I'm glad that I have my routine and most of my my HGs pretty down pat now, so I don't have so much stuff to worry about using up anymore.

Throw away anything expired. Donate anything unopened to a shelter or a friend who you think or know would like it. Give anything opened but still good to a family member that would like to try it otherwise toss it.

I try to use them on my weaves or on my mom or sisters hair. Depending on the ingredients, sometimes I'll turn it into a "2 in 1" and use them for body lotion/body oil. My coin will not be wasted!

Cantu. I had a relaxer went natural and starting using it. I was wondering why my natural hair wasn't as loose as it was when I was a kid. That stuff made my hair dry and frizzy- it was too heavy for my low porosity 4a/3c curls (it was mainly my fault for layering it on) I'm sure it will work for someone else, maybe high porosity hair that's a bit tighter. I felt guilty for throwing it out because of money spent. Camilla Rose (rice water leave in conditioner) and AsIam (pomegranate growash) and hair oils such as avocado oil works for me.

I belong to a local "Buy Nothing" group on Facebook. When I stopped henna-ing, a lady swooped by and got my henna. I have also gotten rid of body washes and all sorts of stuff up there. These people don't care about Covid or anything....they care about getting something for nothing. Someone even picked up some leftover Little Caesar's from me. They really don't care.

You mean flat iron products?

i couldn't think of the word haha, yes, i meant flat iron products! my hair was frizzy after straightening it but i was using old hair products. i usually keep them until they finish but i now know better from this thread lol. i'm going to throw them all out tonight! and refresh my hair care products.

the old hair products was heat protect spray and blow drying spray. those are really hard to finish up! i only straighten my hair 2-3 times a year lately.

Good question, I either return it if I’ve only used it once and the receipt is still valid or try to use it up. My mom went natural recently so I also give things to her. I’m pretty good on not being a product junkie tho.

Shaving cream, bubble bath(shampoo), butters skin moisturizer. If they smell or look funny I just trash the products.

give them to my brother or i keep them just in case i run out of my tried and true and need something thats gonna hold me over. But if the product made my hair feel significantly worse i just throw it out. (But i wait a month so i feel less attached to the money i just wasted). lmao
