Does "sassy" mean loud and "ghetto"? Does it mean aggressive? Is "sassy" the black version of a popular "mean girl"?

Does having a personality while black make one "sassy"? Are my natural gestures and mannerisms "sassy"? Would I be "sassy" if I started rolling my neck, rolling my eyes, and snapping my fingers?

Is it how I present that makes me "sassy"? Do long nails make me "sassy"? Is it the gold jewelry? Is it my natural hair or is it the weave?

It must be the way I talk. Does my black southern accent sound "sassy"? I can’t help that.

What the hell is "sassy" in regards to black women? By definition the word can have positive connotations, but having been called "sassy" as a black woman, I can’t help but to be on guard to what that word may imply. Especially considering it’s a common stereotype.

Sassy is what the elders call a smart mouth. I don’t think it’s the same as being “loud or ghetto”.

I get called sassy all the time. I’m friendly with a bubbly personality, but I’m still bossy and witty lmao.

I see sassy as being witty, shady and assertive.

People call me sassy too.I think it’s our “attitudes” more so than our attire cus I dress like a librarian.

Calling someone sassy is just a nice/passive aggressive way of saying they act like a b!tch

I guess it’s a good thing that you all view it so positively, which it definitely can be. I was called "sassy" by...someone... and I honestly felt judged.

Dionne from Clueless and Hilary from Fresh Prince were sassy. Dionne more than Hilary. I was rewatching Clueless and Cher asked Dionne, “would you say I am selfish” and Dionne said, “no, not to your face”

My English teacher used to get mad when I'd put her in her place. And she'd say, "Don't SASS me!"

So I always looked it as sassy = a woman with attitude

I always equate Sassy with the Sapphire stereotype. It seems like a polite or coded way of saying aggressive black woman because we rarely get to be assertive or confident, it's always aggressive.

I have only been called "sassy" by a White kid. He had been upset with me asking to do his part on the group project, so he responded by calling me "sassy" every time I had asked.

I feel like I mostly get called sassy by non-black people. Which makes me side-eye the term. But the term itself isn't a negative.

When outsiders say this, they mean a mixture of: "ghetto", uncouthness, and comedic relief. Not really anything to do with appearance (besides possibly being overweight... big movie/ TV trope nowadays and in the past with "m@mmies").

This stereotype is so strong that a lot of people look for and expect these traits in every single black woman, which is of course extremely problematic. I don't know why or how we of all groups got typecasted as a disresectful, smart-mouthed collective. But I do know a lot of us tend to play up on our stereotypes. Even being overweight/ obese saying "BW are just bigger" like we don't have pictures from the 40s and 50s BW who were not predominately obese... like diabetes and hypertension and fibroids are disproportionately affecting us.

We have to stop internalizing stereotypes. Y'all are a little to lax in your responses. It's not cute if people are calling you a "sassy black woman"... you should NEVER let anyone tell you who you are and how you inherently act/ will act.

To be sassy to me is to be feminine and ballsy (read: audacious) but it could obvi. be expressed differently, depending on the woman.

For some, they could express sass by being “loud and ghetto” (“Now you know that ain’t right!”) Or you could be quick witted and subtle with it.

I just try to listen to the context that’s being used. Some people will call you sassy b/c of your tone or because you said something that slightly bruised their ego.

Depends on who says it. Rarely is it a compliment.

Sassy....One of my least favorite trigger words from the pale people in corporate america. Anytime a white person has called me that, it's usually because I call them out or question them when they say some racist bµllsh!t. This doesn't include cursing, yelling or getting out of character.

ETA: Perfect example actually happened two months ago when I went back into my office for a meeting. One of our C-Suite execs decided to reach out and touch my hair and comment on how curly it is before I looked at him and said "Please don't touch my hair."

His response?

"Wheww we're getting sassy during quarantine"

I suppressed my anger, as usual. Didn't want to be labeled an angry black woman...We're basically damned if we, damned if we don't...
