So I was going through a throwback tease, I see Austin Mahone (I haven't heard that name in so long) I was like oh sh!t remember him. He used to be big like 2013-2015 but his career didn't take off the way Shawn mendes did. Austin was shown as "The Next Justin Bieber" yet he his career didn't go far. After 2015 he fell off. With the several flopping singles and albums, he was dropped by his label. I heard his big in Japan but I don't know if that's true. He independent now but can't even get a semi-hit. What happened to him? Why didn't his career get big or bigger?

Any thoughts?

Usually when someone is billed as the next so and so and that person is still active and very popular it doesn't end well for them.

Plus his music wasn't good.

Too many of his type was being pushed around that time. Him, Shawn Mendez, that Australian boy with the old lady's mouth and Justin Beiber who was at his peak career and with the industry, there's usually one prominent act at a time. The machine behind him was too weak to create space for himself inside Justin Bieber's monopoly of the teen white boy act.

The way I thought this was Camila Cabello's "ex" until you said his name... Are we sure "Austin Mahone" wasn't rebranded into Shawn Mendes

But don't quote me on this because I could be wrong.

He didn't have good music but to me, I feel like Justin Bieber will be the only boy superstar that is still relevant.

Her & Austin actually had a similar PR relationship to boost her exposure when she was in 5H.

His aesthetic/sound died out and he didn’t follow the trends. He should’ve been a culture vulture like Bieber. Now he’s another has-been with an only fans.

Like others have said, there was already too many of his type around at the time. You had Justin (who was still at his peak) and Cody Simpson. Cody was already struggling to become the next Justin. Austin's music was also not that great. He never produced a single hit. He also never released an album in the US. His first album was only released in Japan in 2017. He had released some mixtapes before that. By the time he released his album in 2017, he had missed his opportunity. He was already in his 20s, and had grown out of that teeny bopper pop phase. Shawn Mendes also arrived on the scene around 2015 with his hit single Stitches. It was a wrap for Austin after that.

Justin Bieber being the top white teenage heartthrob of the time, imo. Being white & pretty can get you very far, but not enough to get into the mainstream. You need something that brings in an audience!

He came after the wave of Cody Simpson, Greyson Chance, Conor Maynard, who all released albums at the peak of Bieber Fever, so I honestly think Austin had more of a chance to blow up. This was the year or two before Bieber had a comeback from Purpose so it was really him and Shawn Mendes, who eventually won out. He just never had a “sound” that set him apart from the others.

Too much alike but Austin came at a time when Bieber was at his peak so he was never gonna make it. They were many Bieber copycats at the time but Scooter Braun is cutthroat and made sure there was no competition. The only singing white boy(s) who were able to go toe to toe with Justin was One Direction. Shawn Mendes also got real lucky... Justin going through his "urban/bad boy" phase, R&B music and acting a fool in the news and 1D and Mendes were the clean cut pop teeny boppers that the white girls were missing.

One, he needed a stylist. He's actually the best looking one out of those guys (especially in recent years), but they gave him leftover clothes, and dressed him in a way where he looked just like everyone else. Nothing distinguished about his teen look, but he clearly got his style together in more recent years.

The teenybopper audience is also very fickle, and if you aren't' in the top 2 acts, you won't catch on, since that audience stays with an artist for 4 years MAX.

He's thriving with his Onlyfans, so good for him.

Austin's career didn't take off because of Justin Bieber. He was way too similar, and Justin wasn't even at his peak yet. He couldn't keep up, tbh. Every time Austin did something, Justin was doing it better.

Marketing a new star as a mega star's rival will never, ever work out if the latter hasn't slowed down. I think if he created his lane back then, he could've done something. Now, I don't believe that he was meant to be up there with Justin, but he could've ridden his 15 minutes of fame for longer.

Justin going through his "urban/bad boy" phase, R&B music and acting a fool in the news and 1D and Mendes were the clean cut pop teeny boppers that the white girls were missing.
Yep! Shawn's management used Justin's "downfall" to their advantage. You can't market another "cookie-cutter pop prince" if the OG one is still making millions from it.

I think One Direction was different. They weren't using Justin Bieber, imo. The "IT boy group" title was vacant, so Simon swooped in with them.
