What do you think personally contributed to this fashion line folding? I used to love rocking the jeans and accessories when it was "in". I also enjoyed Kimora's show that showed the inner workings and behind the scenes of the company.

Times change.
i just think that the brand wasn't "in" anymore. People moved on to other brands. I remember wanting the baby phat sneakers so bad :e7_25: and the kids clowning me because it wasn't cool no more.
Remember G-Unit? :cry 512x512:

Most of us outgrew the brand. It was marketed to junior's-20 something's and as fashion moved away from the heavily "urban" (I.e. black) styles of the late 90's to the mid 00's into more preppy, European, minimalist, etc inspired fashions Baby phat failed to transition with it's core market. Tbh with the popularity of sportswear fashion it could come back now and be the female version of OVO but they wound need to market it much better.

Yeah they do, I try to get them to buy it on clearance though or get it from Citi Trends instead of at my job.

Plus that whole big ass logo everywhere thing has been out of style for a while. I still have a few BP shirts that don't have a logo blasted all on it (a black halter and a orange halter) and some apple bottom jeans without the big apple logo on it that I been wearing for almost 10 years.

Eta : I still got my BP and AB coats though.

I was just talking about this the other day with co-workers. To this day, I cannot find a pair of jeans that would fit me like Baby Phat. She knew how to dress a women with curves. I knew the brand was in trouble when she "stepped down" to focus on other projects.

I would kill for a pair of her jeans and one of her winter vests.

Ecko and SouthPole are still very much around. They changed to a more Karmaloop, Nike dunk, OVO, Supreme, Bathing Ape platform.

Exactly. People got tired of brands plastering their logo all over the place. You see what happened to Coach and Juicy Couture.

I honestly think people consider it "out of style" when it's an Urban company.

I would love a return of Babyphat. But only if they can be like the street brands today. The only brands that cater to women fully in streetwear is MTTM (Married to the Mod)(who still needs some serious design classes.) the rest are mostly brands catered to man. They'll have a women's section but limited to tees only.

LV has also experienced a decline in sales, especially in China. They even had to close down some of the boutiques there because Chinese women are so turned off by the brand and excessive logos. So no, it's not just an urban street wear dilemma.

I was never a fan of Baby Phat, but her label was such a joke. She would have a huge fashion show during Fashion Week, and I seriously doubted that her profits gave her the opportunity to put on such a production. In addition, I rarely saw her wear her own stuff.

But it is. The same reasons that some of you are saying that you don't buy a specific brand are the same reason high end designers are picking up the old designs of dead Urban brands.

I would also say some of those drops in sales in China can be contributed to Asia, China specifically, having a very strong knock off culture. Why buy the real thing when you have almost identical products being sold right next to it?

Still waiting on the youngins bring FILA back. I got a FILA tracksuit buried somewhere and I WILL be the flyest bish come 2020 :arrogant:

m63hhzDnHCRElTJB0X0Sqng.jpg

it's already back lol

both Urban Outfitters and ASOS released FILA collections this past summer and fall and most of it sold out immediately

actually all of the older trends are coming back in style, especially early 2000s trends, so Baby Phat would fit right in

I worked for Phat Fashions for 8 years until the company was dismantled. Phat Fashions was sold to Kellwood and Russell and Kimora went separate ways. Russell started Argyleculture, and Kimora ran the brand in the ground. I've talked about this several times on here.

I always got the impression that whenever the black community embraces something, whites are quick to say it's out of style, overrated, etc... They'll be wearing the same brand for decades but as soon as we wear it, it's damaged goods.

That's why I don't rush to wear those designer goods. They are made by white people, for white people.

They don't really appreciate our patronage.

Just look at the comments from Mike Jeffries about only wanting " all-American [code for "white"] kids wearing Abercrombie. He was raking in all that dough from kids from all walks of life buying the brand but was still snubbing them in interviews.

Exactly! The White fashion industry will be quick to tell you that a brand like House of Dereon is trash, ghetto, etc and scoff at those wearing it, all the while inviting Beyonce to wear their clothing based off of Urban designs much like hers! And the kicker is, they only put her in their sh!t because she's an acceptable kneegrow!

For example: Oprah and the purse incident.

:dead: Them white-purse Euros had Oprah shook with her negro wakeup call. LOL. I like Oprah but, she should've known better. Hell, she shoulda been doing her own clothing, home goods and purse line a long time ago. People would buy. If Jessica Simpson's no talent ass can have a profitable clothing line, so can Oprah.

Baby Phat fell off once they sold it and the "exclusiveness" diminished. When Phat Farm and Baby Phat had their own distribution channel, it was more curated and all shipping came from NYC which added to the allure.

When you could cop that sh!t at macy's---it was OVER because by definition, macys is an off-price store.

The recession. I remember stores like DEMO closing down in 2008/09. They sold baby phat, apple bottoms, roca wear. It had a long run. I remember their adds on Vibe and Essence magazine
