Why do people not like Shea moisture anymore? I just noticed the brand gets trashed a lot, care to share your opinions?

It’s because when they tried to cross over to a non-black audience — the manner in which they did it rubbed their original black audience the wrong way.

They also changed many of their OG formulas to accommodate white customers, then these formulas didn’t work for many with type 4 hair anymore.

When they claimed they were black owned but staff was 100% whyte then the man got an attitude saying he was never inclusive to black people only despite what they said when they first came out in advertisements

hypocritical trash and he changed the formula for his products

I didn’t like Shea moisture from the start, I bought into the hype when I first big chopped and was so disappointed.

Yeah, Their products are no where near the Black hair care section in the Target I go to.

I was never a fan of SheaMoisture's products. I'm glad bw are no longer supporting this brand. I hope it continues. Let those other women who sm stays trying to include save them.

  • He changed his grandmother's formula when he sold to Bain. More water, more chemicals, less shea and natural ingredients
  • He sold a multi-generational Black company to a white company
  • He changed his advertising from Black models to white models.
  • His animal-that-eats-from-trash-like comments about Black people and Black family values

They changed the formulation in order to cater to a different audience, while ignoring the people who put them on the map. The products aren’t for ethnic hair any longer.

They tried to compare white women with red or barely wavy hair to the struggles and discrimination black women face with their hair.

Also they're products don't work like they used to. I believe they changed the formula to cater to non-blacks too.

All I use is Shea Moisture and Camille Rose. The 100% coconut oil shampoo and coconut & hibiscus masque are what I use every wash day.

I used to love the Jamaican Black castor oil shampoo... but it seems watery now. I've moved on to better things... and my type 4 curls ain't complaining:laugh.

I'm done with them because they keep discontinuing their protein-free and low-porosity-friendly product lines. It doesn't bother me if they want to expand their product range to suit type 2/3 hair, just don't neglect type 4 customers in the process.

I tried their shampoo and hair mask for the first time, both smelled like alcohol. And made my hair dry.

I used to consider some of their DC staples but then they changed their formulas. My hair routine is totally different now so don't even bother checking for them.

I used to use their products all the time but they definitely changed their formulas. I refuse to use any of their hair products anymore.

they changed the formula once it went mainstream. Same like Carol's Daughter. Now they come out with a new line every month.

There was a commercial that was centered towards white women and people went off. Apparently, the formula DID change, but that commercial was the final nail in the coffin.

when I first went natural I kinda forced myself to like them because of all the hype. Even when the products were making my hair feel like straw. When they started marketing torwards non blk And did all the ingredient changing To accommodate for them. it made me just dislike it even more and lose respect for them

Because the brand sold-out to accommodate white people.

They changed their formulas to accommodate white people, they could've just made a line for type 2 hair.

They made that god awful ad with that red hair white lady talking about how she wore her hair in a bun because she didn't like her hair. TONE DEAF.

The biggest selling point of Shea Moisture was that it was started by a Black woman in Sierra Leone and became a multi-generational Black owned business. Black people supported it because it was made by us for us, and it worked for us. Then her grandson sold it to a White owned corporation and they decided to start marketing for everyone.

I feel bad because I do like their body washes. I don't use any of their hair products anymore. If anyone could recommend some cool body washes, that'd be great!

Same. My hair hated it but my son's hair loved it before he grew it out.

Personally, a lot of the products didn’t work for me - that Curl Enhancing Smoothie had my hair so dry you could strike a match on my sh!t. The Shea butter hair mask also dried my hair out.

2) the marketing. It was clear that SM was pivoting towards a lighter, brighter, damn near whiter audience. Formulations started changing and the consumers using the products couldn’t use them anymore because they didn’t work for their hair.

3) oversaruration. It seemed like every time you looked around there was a new line. If you did find a line you liked - I actually liked the high porosity line- it would be discontinued. Not worth the hassle.

I still like the curl enhancing and moisturizing line. The low porosity leave-in used to be a staple before it was discontinued.

Same with the lotion for me. Nothing hydrates these hands like their, Hemp Seed Lotion. Bit dude was a clown for those comments.

I never liked them, but was happy when everyone else came along to see their ashiness like I did. And then they started pandering to white people and changing all of their formulas, so I laughed harder. Their products were never that girl.

The moisture retention line was amazing before they became mainstream. I bought some old bottles from Ross and then when I went to target the shampoo wasn’t any different than L’Oréal. I do use their wash day water to foam shampoo when I have braids/locs but that’s just out of convenience

All I know is Camille rose better stay the same and bring more products into the stores. They’re the only brand I see in the drugstore with mostly natural ingredients that’s not watered down

I was officially done with SM when they changed the products and outright lied when called out. Not only were they lying, but the tone of their responses was often disrespectful. Then of course receipts were dropped and people started looking into his PR, which turned out to be all whyte.

changed formula

we have better products for us on the market now
What products would you recommend, I stayed with them because it’s so hard to find products that work for my hair. I am trying other products now but I use their shampoo and smoothie, they discontinue what I like every few months so am using some ransoms currently.

It's white owned now. Dried my hair out and made it shed more. My hair recovered when I through out hundreds worth of their products and went back to the basics smh. I do love the smell but it's not worth it.
