It sounds like she's crunching on ice, and it sounds sooooo good.

I used to eat cornstarch every now and then. I'm eating a lot more leafy greens and drinking water. The cravings come back when I'm on my cycle. I'm craving a box right now.

this thread made me so thankful

some people are still dealing with their pica

I used to eat baby powder as a child <5
then I would chew pencils 12-14years old
I would also chew the top of plastic cups
I used love the smell of gas, permanent markers, and pinesol

I am taking my iron pills
I used to take it twice a day

I used to eat chalk, rocks, my finger/toenails, the skin around my fingernails, dirt (still do). I like eating dirt because of the earthy flavor. All of this started when I was diagnosed with stage 5 ESRD (kidney disease) when I was 12 and put on dialysis. I got a kidney transplant a year and a half later and I stopped having cravings. Then damn near 6 years later my transplant failed and I was put back on dialysis and have been eating dirt, the skin around my fingernails and my finger/toenails ever since. I'm still waiting for that 2nd transplant damn near 5 years later

Dr Sebi, guise! He said majority of black people have an iron deficiency & the meds they give you to regulate it arent good for our bodies. Lots of Apricots & green leafy veggies often. Iron meds arent making y'all constipated?

Its crazy, a month after this thread I had a blood transfusion bc of low iron levels and the iron they prescribed backs me up. I skip days and drink tea, but I really can't afford to not take the full does they give me or else I get weak.

I eat spinach, but I know its not enough. I'll try the apricots too. I don't like iron pills.

it's a very small amount of spinach you need to eat too that's high in iron! try green drinks like twice a day. organic apricots! do you have dark circles around your eyes? (if you dont mind me asking)

yes, thats another symptom. try those green drinks twice a day!! it never hurts to try. depending on your weight should equal the amount of greens/apricots etc. good luck, girly boo! also are you taking any meds other than? cuz what could be pulling your iron this much?

Nothing else, but we don't know yet. It's been months and nothing. I had low iron for years and no one diagnosed it until last year. But thanks! I don't wanna be on meds for the rest of my life, so this helps a lot.

Ive always been an ice eater, but true pica kicked in during my pregnancy.
It was the biotin tablets- they taste like dirt. I dont know how I ended up buying chalk but I was.

I prefer Svatgorye. Belgorad is okay but too creamy. Clay is too gummy.

I chewed and spat.

I also like baking soda but I chewed/spit that out, too.

Cornstarch every pregnancy...also the last time, I found a person online selling kaolin clay from somewhere in the southern USA, Georgia IIRC. OMG, It was soo good like from mid to end of pregnancy, I can't even explain. :cryAs soon as the baby was born, I had zero urge for it or the cornstarch anymore. Crazy.

Funny..with my first baby, I was visiting my parents and had a moment in the pantry with the cornstarch. My mom was cracking up when she came into the kitchen. Turns out I totally had it on my lips & a dusty ring around my mouth. She was like 'what on earth?' hahahaha She teased me about that for a long time.

I went through a crushed ice(sometimes with a little salt sprinkled over it) thing in high school but it went away.

I watch people that eat chalk on Instagram . They always make it look so good . They insist they don’t swallow, but that’s impossible !!

Chile that damn Kroger brand cornstarch. I like argo in the yellow tub in a pinch though. I keep quitting it but the sh!t be calling me. I've been clean for about 3 weeks.

I like to get the box, put water in it then put it on my cable box to dry for a few days. It gets so crunchy with little rocks inside the box and it tastes just like the box too.

Or I like to put water in the cornstarch, make big chunks, let it dry, then crush them up. That sh!t be looking like those little crunchy potato sticks. Delicious. Why is it so delicious.

Kuzu root starch is delicious as well but too expensive.

I've stopped eating cornstarch and now I'm into this but I'm 2 days clean.

PICA is the term when you crave non nutrient food. Examples include: ice, cornstarch, flour etc.. When I am on YouTube I see ONLY black women eating this . I know it means you lack a iron but WHY is it only black women?

EDIT: I understand it’s an iron deficiency but my question is why is this manly a problem with black women?

I don’t think we’re the only ones who eat like this. And it seems to be a big thing in the US. People should substitute it with another cheap healthy alternative.

Reading the comment, I notice many would say they like it because of the texture. Because it was dry

The texture of what? Cornstarch? I’ve never eaten cornstarch alone and Idk anyone who does.
Yeah. The texture idk and the dryness. It’s sad. I am sure it’s not just us but it seems like we are the majority. All the videos I see are from black women.

It's an ingredient that sits in some peoples cupboards. So maybe because we're more likely to cook.

Post the PICA vids OP, I can see your point being missed and I would love to see if cornstarch related PICA affects black women more than others.

I did. It kept saying the photo was to large so I had to crop it

Well maybe cornstarch is cheaper for the iron they’re trying to get. Idk they could easily just eat beans or something. I’m mad bc a lot of nuts have iron but are expensive asf.

The sound of cornstarch makes me feel sick! Maybe it's a texture thing. I used to eat tissue because I liked the way it felt on my tongue

I'd like to think I know a little about this. Corn starch consumption is related to clay consumption, which is popular in many African cultures. Cultures which do not have a dairy tradition (no cows or milk) often supplement their mineral intake by eating certain types of soil (geophagy). Through consumption of soil, minerals such as iron and calcium can be added to the diet in sufficient amounts. Diarrhea from tropical diseases can also be treated using soil (fun fact: the original ingredient in Kaopectate was kaolin, a certain type of clay). Children and women, especially pregnant women, are frequent consumers of clay. Popular edible African clays are nzu, ayilo, and calaba. I have tried them all, and I was an enthusiastic clay eater for some time. I was also horribly anemic.

When Africans were enslaved, and brought to America, the tradition of geophagy came with them. Many areas in America have clay suitable for eating, such as Georgia white dirt, sour clay, and red clay, which is high in iron. Many of these deposits are in the south.

When we migrated north, or were stranded in cities, we did not have access to the same clays that we did in the rural south. Corn starch, having a similar consistency, became a non-nutritive substitute. It satisfies a craving, but it does not provide the minerals needed.

Clay consumption is worldwide. There are medicinal clays from India, seasoning clays from South America, and medicinal clays from Germany.

My mom used to eat flour like it was a snack. I always thought it was weird, but now maybe it makes sense.
