Loni Love
Sheryl Underwood
Star Jones
Sherri Shepherd

Has anyone ever noticed this or is it just me? Is it that difficult to find a black woman whose in shape to be on one of these talk shows? I swear.....I feel like these networks go out of their way to find black woman like this because it makes white people feel comfortable around out of shape, unattractive black women....like nobody is threatened by them. Would Oprah be Oprah had she looked like Kenya Moore?

In Oprah's defense, was thin during her talkshow. Oprah had problems maintaining her weight over the years, but she was actually very small in her heyday.

Edit: I see she started out larger. I guess in response to the question, Oprah would be Oprah had she looked like Kenya Moore because she has before. I can admit when I'm incorrect, but her weight had no effect on her success. So she still shouldn't be placed in the category.

The people who sit at the tables and decide what they want to put on television, have a dedication to promoting the loud, overweight black woman stereotype. Someone who will tell it like it is, while being funny or sassy.

This does not apply to Oprah, obviously, she’s in a class by herself. She is talented and dedicated. Her weight struggles also endeared her to millions.

It’s like they don’t want a fit, attractive BW on TV who can get her point across. That role is for other races to fill. I don’t have an issue with a BW being loud, fat, etc. It’s an issue when the powers that be only want black women in that role.

Just like why Nene is so popular. That’s what they like to see. A non-threat they can laugh along with (or laugh at).

white women (stay at home moms) who bring in the views do not want to watch a beautiful black woman who is in shape...they have husbands and they will be damned to have their husbands come home saying "HOLLY MOLLY! WHO'S THAT FOX on the TV YOU'RE WATCHING!?!?!?"

Wasnt it said when Oprah lost all that weight her viewers complained and they gave her hell?

And then that cow/meat company or whatever was about to have her shut down. She had to move her whole show to wherever the trial was.

What's the problem with a plus size woman on a talk show?

Because a part from Rosie O'Donnell, you don't see overweight white woman hosting talk shows. Overweight black woman on these shows are too common to the point where I find it insulting.....almost like they're mocking black women. I just wanna know why can't an in-shape black woman be a host? It shouldn't be that hard to find.

I wouldn't put Oprah in this category. I always find it interesting how they have to use the most unattractive black women for these platforms. It's not that hard to find an intelligent black woman who is in shape. The media seeks stereotypical women, women who are loud, bigger etc. All sizes should be represented in the media, not just a certain look. They don't do this with white women. They give a rounded look to white women. Just like on the real, I like Loni but I hate how she is the public voice for black women on that platform.

PREACH.

I agree, Oprah is seen as attractive (although not in a glamour model sense, but she is and has been seen as cute) and wasn't always heavy. She never wore super tight or low cut outfits, heavy makeup, hair extensions, or even tried to be sexy, just not her thing.

But aside from her, yes yts love having a m@-mmy who is not competition for them looks-wise.

Tamera is the token mixed girl. Tamar is loud and sassy even though she is thin. Tamar is the stereotypical "HEY GIRLLLLLL (rolling eyes, snapping fingers)" black woman.

They do the same thing in movies, and on TV shows as well. All the white chicks will be thin & in shape, but the 1 black woman will be fat, loud and sassy.

I'm not shaming BBW but you will NEVER see 4 drop dead gorgeous BW and one fat non black woman on TV together EVER!!!

The agenda to portray BW as undesirable is real.
I like a lot of those woman but they need to understand when they are being used as the butt of the joke.

Interesting observation. Probably bc they think that type of woman will be more entertaining to viewers, like comedic relief. If you think about it not a lot of white female comedians are conventionally attractive, either, but they aren’t usually obese.

How old are some you guys? Oprah started off fat. She had two periods of weight loss, one with optifast, the other with Bob Green. Oprah was overweight most of the time during her reign. She was overweight when she rose to fame that is for sure.

ETA: Since most fonts here were born AFTER Oprah's heyday (i.e. the late 80s to mid 90s).Here are some pictures.

This is what Oprah looked like when she was picked up for syndication. She was fat when she started off.
oprahh.jpg

This is what she looked like winning her first emmy.

oprah3.jpg

In the mid late 80s oprah went on a crash diet with Optifast. She lost a lot of weight quickly. She did a show about it. I remember watching the show where she carted in a bunch of fat equivalent to what she lost. Oprah herself said tht she was only that weight for one day. The next day she had gained about 5 pounds and by the next week 10lbs and so on.

The year after she lost that weight she looked like this.
oprahh1.jpg

oprah9.jpg

And a few years later
oprah0.jpg

In the mid 90s, she met Bob Greene, who was a physical trainer and nutritionist. She would always have him on her show. She began running and watching what she ate and lost a lot of weight. That is also when she started her O magazine. But by this time, Oprah was already well-established. And even after she got super thin with Greene's program she gained back about 20-30 pounds in the years following but she never got back up to her original weight.

They arent being used for jokes (thats just an added bonus). They are being used to pacify the egos/self esteem of YT women viewers whom are their target audiences because they know THOSE are the people watching them because the rest of world cant afford to not work. We at work....working lol.

The black women mentioned in the thread make these YT women feel comfortable...not feel like they have to step their game up. On that front they are being used.

Loni is embarrassing. Even when she was on Chelsea Lately. Loni has a degree in engineering but she represents herself as the worst of black women stereotypes: unmarried, overweight, loud, oversexed, ignorant ugh.
Not that being unmarried is bad but there is a stereotype that black women are unwanted. I would love to see a married, healthy, accomplished black woman on these mainstream platforms.
Rashan Ali is a good example of this (she's on sister circle).

Anyways lolz most American women are fat and it’s more pronounced in the black community. Fat women are more relatable. No one likes the skinny snarky b!tch

I get what y'all are saying but I think a lot of black viewers have insecurities they're projecting here as well. A lot of these women are comedians and I don't imagine the entertainment world has been all that easy for them given the descriptions y'all readily throw at them. Damned if you, damned if you don't. A lot of y'all are more worried that's how "others" see you, YOU don't like how they look- all there is to it. It makes YOU uncomfortable. lol.

Notice that all of them are light skin. Big fat black women are darkskinned.

Loni is divorced. Any other Braxton sister would’ve been better than Tamar on the show, they’re all quite funny.

With all of Oprah’s money she could have been kept her weight off. I’m wondering if she knew her audience would feel more secure and less threatened by her fatness. I wonder if keeping her weight was strategic move to help secure her large white/other audience.

We can add Whoopi too. Not fat but a tad overweight
She is the BIGGEST hypocrite & self stereotype of a black woman on telelies there is.
Need a wardrobe and hair style quick!
Does nothing to improve the image that black women can be graceful and attractive on telelies. Guess those 1000 white penis really threw her off somehow.

Thankyou, these people find anything to complain about. It’s plenty of skinny black women who were/are on television. Why do y’all hate fat people ? And since when is Oprah or Whoopi a stereotype ?

I wouldn't add Oprah to the list.
However, ...
Sheryl Underwood is beyond atrocious! She is downright ridiculous on The Talk. Her smile irks my soul.

Y’all are the most bitter bunch of women I’ve ever seen. She can’t help her smiler or the way her teeth grew in. You sound a little bit jealous and there is nothing stereotypical about Sherly

She a comedian, she does what all comedians do and I’m sure if she didn’t look a certain way you wouldn’t have a problem or be embrassed by the way she acts
I’m not sure about that. The culture is embarrassed by Cardi B right? I’m mean we love her, but she is a little embarrassing and the way she acts is cringe worthy. I think we feel the same way about Leslie.

Yup, just like in Glee. It was so obvious to me what they were doing. The white, Asian, Latina girls or whatever were small cheerleaders. Then they had one really large black chick who got bad storylines. Hated that show and serves them right that now everyone thinks the show is cursed.
