Courtney Love has done a lot of crazy shit and had drug issues so people don’t like or respect her (along with the whole Killed Kurt thing that I just don’t believe), but she is a very good songwriter and a TRUE rockstar. Honestly I think the 90s is when white women made the best music, vs their corniness in other decades the whole smart angry white chick thing worked really well. Courtney, Shirley Manson from Garbage and Fiona Apple are the best examples of this

Skin from Skunk Anansie and PJ Harvey were also good 90s female rock artists. And does anyone remember Kittie? Lol

It's hard to imagine it coming back into the mainstream. Occasionally a rock song does well on the charts, but it's usually more like pop-infused alternative rock than pure rock.

I just want trap music to go away forever, so I'll take whatever can replace it.

Yeah, I didn't notice how dead it was until I realized I am only listening to old rock music. I fucking love Rock. So I would love for it to start being a thing again but everybody wants to sound like drake now LOL.

Kings of leon and don't forgot imagine dragons!

But I love Incubus, Bon Jovi, Sound garen, foo fighters, the killers, papa roach, pearl jam, temple of the dog, GNR, SLASH- I think GNR is actually making some new music ya'll. Slash did say he had been working with the rest of the members via zoom. So maybe they can restore it. If not, I know I can count on Slash to make an album of his own and to collab if not. He is always making music, him and tom morello just came out with a song actually

I love Soundgarden!! The Melvins, Mother love bone, Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine, temple of the dog, Foo fighters, Pearl Jam. This is good stuff omg!!

Guns n' roses and Black Sabbath are my favorite heavy metal bands. Can't wait for that new GNR stuff!!

I also want rock to be a thing again.... Real rock not some basic ass guitar riff over a rinsed trap beat

Thank you!! Then I have friends talking about omg I love rock music and I ask them which bands they think are the greatest then I'm hit with: The Wombats, Circa Waves, Maroon 5, The 1975, Twenty One Pilots. What the heck!

And I'd be there like look, I love these bands too, but I thought we'd talk about some serious things here.

I miss this era of music so much! Elementary (grunge and post punk, alt rock and early emo), junior high (nu metal and metal, indie), and high school (scene, post hardcore, emo) were fantastic. Even a few years post till about 2011 were amazing.

Thanks! And yes, I already hated Thurston. And to think I uses to have a crush on that Shaggy from Scooby-Doo looking fool when I was a teenager

Lmao, I think I was the only fan who didn't crush on him. My rock crushes were Dave Navarro and Anthony Kiedis. After reading Viv's book I got into The Slits, they were amazingly influential and never got credit. Perry Farrell basically stole Ari Up's entire swag (I mean Ari was problematic but she was also extremely innovative), women in rock never get their due.

Skin from Skunk Anansie and PJ Harvey were also good 90s female rock artists. And does anyone remember Kittie? Lol

I am a gigantic PJ Harvey fan, she's the last artist on my bucket list. Talk about a woman who never gets credit, PJ is amazingly talented. I also loved Skin and Skunk Anansie, I liked Kitty when they first came out and we all thought Fallon was black, she quickly told us she wasn't.

The last female fronted band i was excited for was Straight Line Stitch. They had a black female vocalist who coud sing and scream. Saw them at The Machine Shop and they were great but you could tell she had really bad stage fright. Their first (and I think only album) is still in my rotation.

God this thread makes me miss the 90s even more than usual. I really miss the mid 90s, that's my favorite era for Rock.

I think there will be shortlived trends of rock music coming back in the charts, but probably not much more than that sadly. Hip hop and trap has been dominating for quite a long time now. 2000s emo and pop punk has kinda been making a comeback, but it's mostly modernised by rappers with more overproduced beats to fit the mainstream.

I miss 90s and 2000s rock too. Whether it was on the pop or indie side, it was a great time because that's when the charts were more diverse and there was more room for all kinds of genres.

White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, MCR, Fall Out Boy, Interpol, Green Day, Modest Mouse, The Killers etc etc  So nostalgic!! I still heavily play their music all the time.

Luckily there's still plenty of rock being made today, it's just underground. I've been loving the psychedelic and garagey sound a lot of modern bands have now

Nu Metal's peak was 1999-2000. Emo rock's 2005-2007.

Can you post some example of metal indie, post hardcore and scence?

When I think of punk from the very late 90s and the first few years of the 2000s (2000-2002) Blink 182 and Sum 41 is what first come to my mind. Blink 182 was huge back then and perhaps the most important band along with Korn and Limp Bizkit. As a matter of fact Korn's peak would be 1998-2000. Limp Bizkit's 1999-2000 and Blink 182's 2001-2002. That's how I always saw it.

It's not like it's stopped existing. There are great rock, metal and punk albums being released every year. Listen to the rock stations. It being mainstream like it was in the early 2000s and the decades prior won't increase its quality. If anything, it'll diminish it.

I love nu metal. Deftones is my favorite band. But I don’t think rock is ever gonna be mainstream again unless it’s pop rock with more pop influences than rock. I could see Billie Eilish doing a “rock” album and it being mainstream or even someone like post Malone
They're one of mine too, Ohms, their new release has some pretty killer tracks...

For some of us it never went away since the really good stuff was never mainstream anyways. I listen to a ton of old stuff but also keep up on stuff by some faves like Godflesh, QOTSA, Deftones, Death Grips, Jesu, Neurosis, Sleigh Bells, and others.

The Foo Fighters made a comeback and kinda made rock a little mainstream only for a moment in time I think in 2012. That’s the last time I remember rock making a comeback.

I looove death grips! But can we say they're rock lol?? I really really love their music, but everybody just says they're trash lol

I think they're just experimental :)
Alt/hip hop? I saw them opening for Ministry (another favorite) they killed. I like bands who people can't get and don't fit into a category. People who don't like them probably are into shitty music so, you know.

If yes, how soon do you think it's gonna happen?

Man, this is why I miss so bad my high school and early college years. I was soo into Nu Metal back in the very late 90s and early 2000s. Emo rock was really my shit during 2004-2007 as well. Too bad after 2008 it started to decay badly.

I think Kings of Leon was the closest last thing we had when it comes to alternative/rock and by that time they weren't that many mainstream rock bands left. I miss rock.

Rock was always here it's just going through that faze where not much songs from that genre are charting. I think Pop music went through that faze in the early 2000s, where R&B and Rock were dominating. However, I don't think alternative is coming back as soon as some would like to think, but other subgenres in rock might.

I really hope so. Good rock music is timeless. Yesterday while driving I was blasting Soundgarden and Alice In Chains. I was getting my entire life! I will never get tired of their songs. What an era that must’ve been to witness. I wish I could’ve been around to experience the rise of grunge it as it was happening in the early 90’s. I also still love a lot of the early 2000s rock bands that I grew up with. I will never get tired of good rock music. I’ve lost touch with most of today’s music. It sounds and feels so empty and hollow in comparison.
