If yes, how soon do you think it's gonna happen?

Man, this is why I miss so bad my high school and early college years. I was soo into Nu Metal back in the very late 90s and early 2000s. Emo rock was really my sh!t during 2004-2007 as well. Too bad after 2008 it started to decay badly.

I think Kings of Leon was the closest last thing we had when it comes to alternative/rock and by that time they weren't that many mainstream rock bands left. I miss rock.

I hope so. Rock is one of my favorite genres. 70s and 80s rock, and 90s and early 2000s alternative are great. I miss good music.

I listen to mostly Classic Rock, but I love 90s alternative a lot. I don't know about a comeback, honestly. Sometimes I wonder if we'll ever see another Nirvana. They weren't the best (I loved them, though), but damn if they didn't make an impact in music, culture, etc.

Rock music is still being made. As for going mainstream, I honestly don't know. It would take a very special band to make the mainstream audience take notice.

You have a few mainstream hip hop stars of the past couple years (Post Malone, Juice WRLD, Lil Uzi Vert, Travis Scott with his fake emo rage sh!t) who have drawn inspiration from rock and openly talked about their love for the genre. Bille Eyelash also likes rock music if that matters. But it's not enough.

What the genre needs is a band with prodigious creative talent, soul and marketability. Think Nirvana/Kurt Cobain but for this generation. Not whatever MGK is doing with his retread of punk Blink 182/grunge chords.

Bree Runway and Doja Cat have songs that give me those kinda vibes

Of course, that isn't their primary genre, but it's cool to hear the influences. Bree also has a remix version with Rico Nasty, who definitely blends genres.

I'm really into alternative rock! I like Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Muse (their first four albums specifically), Wolf Alice, Nirvana, St Vincent and Alt-J.

I have a playlist full of early 2000s songs by My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, Paramore, Panic! at the Disco, etc...I loveddd their stuff, it was my lifeline in high school.

But I don't think that specific pop punk/pop emo sound will have a comeback. As much as I enjoy it, it's pretty dated and the attempt to revive it has been butchered by mumble rappers. I think there's more hope for grunge and hard rock.

"Alternative" / grunge / rock / rock-adjacent is the genre I listen to the most. My favourite bands are Queens of the Stone Age and Fuzz. I love grunge from the 90s - Nirvana, Silverchair etc. I also loved nu-metal like you and I still listen to it!

There are actually still some good rock bands out there. It just takes a while to shake them out. Sometimes I'll spend an evening going down a YouTube rabbit hole and discover some new bands that way. I also keep discovering new songs I like from the 70s / 90s / etc.

It does feel like rock is weaker than it has ever been but some new good stuff will always keep getting made.

I love nu metal. Deftones is my favorite band. But I don’t think rock is ever gonna be mainstream again unless it’s pop rock with more pop influences than rock. I could see Billie Eilish doing a “rock” album and it being mainstream or even someone like post Malone

I already posted that it was like 6 months ago and like clock work I started seeing more bands surfacing. Hell even Doja Cat's performance spoke to it. Don't get me wrong, it's all trying to be sh!tty 2002 emopoppunk nonsense so not... peak stuff but there's an appetite for anything that isn't ariana grande and watered down R&B.

p.s. if someone can recommend music that would be great. It's so time-consuming trying to find new music in this genre.

If you're talking about rock being in favor with mainstream audiences again then I honestly don't know.

I don't think it will ever come back the way it was, because if you check throughout the decades, since the 50s, they kept watering it down to a point where that Let It Rock pop song by Lil Wayne and Kevin Rudolf was considered rock by some. Eew

But if you know where to find it there are a lot of bands spanning all kinds of rock sub-genres in the underground right now. Some of them have debuted in the past 4 years and are making music that sounds like lost gems from 30 years ago.

I love rock music and I hate all that watered down pop music trying to be passed off as rock. Someone mentioned Bree Runway. I looove Bree Runway, she's one of my faves rn, but rock? That's a reach.

I miss the emo bands so badly. They bring me early college memories. 2004-2007 were definitely the last years in mainstream punk/rock.

Damn... Even The Killers make it for me. Although I will need to cherry-pick some of their songs anyways.

And oldie, I know.

I love the fact that The Killers never sounded and still don't sound like any other band out there.

This song came out in 2017 and yet didn't chart btw. I just discovered last week. I am getting a thru back because it has the same exactly vibe from the material they released back in the second half of the 2000s.

Always been a fan, I absolutely LOVE Korn(Jonathan Davis is forever my man lol), nu metal, grunge, 90s alternative, goth... As far as hitting the mainstream? Eh, it could happen, but I don't think at the same level as it did back then. Best believe the bands are still around making noise, although it may not reflect on the charts. I've been listening to Spiritbox, they're a new favorite of mine.

I see bits of it coming back but only in the “emo” “scene” way....I lived through that era and much preferred 90s grunge and alternative which was a little before my time but to me, bands like Nirvana, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins, etc stood the test of time better than the 00s emo.

Smashing Pumpkins was the last big remanant of grunge rock.

Same here, I prefer 90s grunge and alternative to 00s emo. It gets annoying fast to me. But I do have some bands I love from the early 00s though.

You mentioned Hole, I'm crazy about Hole. They're in my top 5 90s bands. I just love listening to Courtney Love screaming on records. And her writing!!

Courtney Love has done a lot of crazy sh!t and had drug issues so people don’t like or respect her (along with the whole Killed Kurt thing that I just don’t believe), but she is a very good songwriter and a TRUE rockstar. Honestly I think the 90s is when white women made the best music, vs their corniness in other decades the whole smart angry white chick thing worked really well. Courtney, Shirley Manson from Garbage and Fiona Apple are the best examples of this

I love Shirley Manson. Version 2.0 was one of my first records ever bought (though I ended up having it 2 years after its release).

Maybe it can but something genre bending and fusion like this to give it a fresh take. It won't come back the same as it was in the past as it shouldn't, it has to keep evolving. The artist/band who is successfully able to do that will bring it back to the forefront.

Yes, but it’s going to be pop rock and maybe pop metal. Pop and hip hop have a strangled hold on mainstream music.

There’s more neo-psychedelic rock bands in the underground more than ever, and indie rock is pretty solid. The thing is what type of rock do people want to hear, and seeing that no wants anything but (bubblegum) pop infused music, I doubt true rock will ever be popular again. Unless teens start to find a type of rebellion in it, which they’re finding in rap more and more now. Rock is considered old people music which is unfortunate.

Rock music can comeback, but will most likely have techno and hip-hop influences. Trap-metal is the current alternative genre. Beat makers are more readily available and easier to orchestrate than traditional musical instruments. And some songs are meant to be a meme than a hit.

Courtney Love was a rock visionary in the 90s. I really really connect with her music. I don't really care about her personal life, and yeah people have a lot to say but she gave us masterpiece albums. I have Pretty On The Inside and Live Through This on rotation very frequently. I really appreciate her art. I love Hole more than Nirvana actually!

The 90s were amazing. Kim Deal from Pixies/The Breeders is another of my favorites. That era was golden... Unfortunately I wasn't there lol.

I was OBSESSED with Hole when they came on the scene. I also loved them more than Nirvana (I tend to prefer female fronted/all female bands). My 17 year old self thought the world of Courtney Love. Live Through This is one of the best albums I ever heard to this day.

I actually saw the Breeders in 1994. Damn near died in a moshpit during their set. Good times lol.
