Woman drowns in huge vat of SUNFLOWER SEEDS after falling in while unloading trucks
  • The 56-year-old woman slipped and fell on Wednesday evening while unloading
  • She was wearing a harness but it was not attached and she was buried
  • Her co-workers tried to dig her out and then cut her out but she was trapped
A woman in North Dakota has died after slipping into a huge vat of sunflower seeds being unloaded on a farm.

The 56-year-old, who is not being named until authorities have notified her family, was working at Glinz Farm near Pingree in south-central North Dakota on Wednesday evening.

She was wearing a harness at the time, but it was not attached to anything.

She lost her footing and fell, and was buried by the seeds, local media reported.

Chad Kaiser, county sheriff, said other workers were unsuccessful in trying to save her.

His officers were called to the scene at 6pm, and assisted as farm workers cut holes into the side of the bin to try to free her.

Fire and rescue crews also had to drill more holes once they arrived.

They eventually freed the woman and medics performed CPR, but she died at the farm.

North Dakota grows the most sunflowers in the U.S. and Stutsman County is the center of it all

Sunflowers are a valuable crop across the Dakotas, Minnesota, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Texas and California, with North Dakota producing more sunflowers than any other state.

Stutsman County, where the farm is located, is the epicenter of the U.S. sunflower industry and produces more sunflowers than any other country in North Dakota.

Gilinz Farm has been owned by the Gilinz family since 1960.

David Gilinz, who now runs the farm, told his local newspaper The Grand Forks Herald last year that he farms about 11,500 acres of mainly soybeans.

damn, what a crazy way to die.

I'd come back as a ghost and tell my family to lie about my cause of death.

Manual labor jobs are really dangerous. So many put themselves in harm’s way to provide food for all of us. I hope her soul is at rest.

This is sad. Weird but sad.
She was wearing a harness at the time, but it was not attached to anything.
What's the point of safety measures if they're not followed. Somebody's carelessness likely cost her her life.

@LacquerLover

I didn't have the guts to lol. Even though drowning in a huge vat of sunflower seeds (SUNFLOWER SEEDS??) is a seriously fkd up way to go.

During my last moments as I was spitting sunflower seeds out of my mouth I would be asking the Lord to seriously explain why he would do me like this. What could I possibly have done in life to deserve to sink in a pit of seeds?

I mean..I would be respectful and everything & I would try really hard not to have an attitude with the Almighty, but...drowning in sunflower seeds?SUNFLOWER SEEDS??

C'mon.

Initially, I just glanced at the pictures of the silos and didn't pay it any attention, but for goodness sakes, look at how huge they are. They are dwarfing that tanker truck. It makes me think not only suffocation with seeds preventing her from breathing, but she likely would have crushed as well depending on how much she thrashed around and plunged herself deeper in the silo.

I'm going to need the harness story explained. Was that systematic or a quick decision? I hope a real investigation is conducted and not a cover up for whatever reasons.

This reminds me of that 911: Lone Star episode.

I can’t imagine what that poor woman went through in her final moments. That is a horrible, horrible way to die, may she Rest In Peace.

I remember reading about farms and they said that this type of death is not entirely uncommon. The grain is like quicksand. Even if you don't move, you will sink, depending on what's stored. Naturally, you're going to panic. Stuff is really scary.

Apparently, corn can also explode.

What a unique way to die. I’d be trying to eat myself out of drowning in sunflower seeds. They are so good.
