I was talking to my cousin about this who lives in expensive LA. She’s from the south originally and she was saying that while she would love to own a home, nothing beats living by the water and beautiful nature. She said she is fine if it never happens and thinks she’s staying in Cali for the long run. I feel her as we thought about moving there too but if we do, we would probably move back down south and buy another home at retirement age.

Yes, I’m fine with it. I’m not going to have kids, and I like to move around a lot so I can’t yet imagine having a house and I definitely can’t afford one in every place I’d like to eventually live.

The way companies are buying up single family homes - y’all better purchase within the next 5-10yrs or you’ll have no choice

I came to the conclusion that I will rent throughout my working age and then I will buy property in my retirement years outside the United States. I rent because its more mobile and that's beneficial for my purse, because I was moving around because of work before the pandemic.

Yes, I’m actually okay with renting. I plan to move around a lot, hopefully abroad so I’m not sure where I will be settling. Just me and few suitcases!

No, I would not be content with renting forever.

I did not realize the value and importance of home ownership until I actually became a homeowner, and I would never want to go back to not owning my own property.

I've rented many times, even since beoming a homeowner, and it's just not the same.

Great thinking that’s what we will likely do if we decide to sell our home and move out west in a few years. We will buy again at retirement age but during your working years why not be where you want to live as working is stressful enough

I am renting now and i am fine with it, but my desire is to buy something in the future in my home town.

I do also see myself being mobile though, so I would rent it out on AirBnb or do a sublet if I wasnt going to be in my city longterm.

I’m fine with it for now, I’m military so it would be a hassle for me to sale and it’s unknown when I would have to leave a area.

My secret plan is not to have a house per se. But get a nice plot of land and then put a container home on it. They can customize how you want and make it super modern. All u have to do is make sure ur hooked up to and meet the city/ county sewer/ water guidelines if ur buying in a populated area. And they are relatively cheap...on average about 70k.

Hell no. We are priced out of homes in our current state (prices surged as people moved here from CA), but I have no plans to be here long enough to where buying a home makes sense. We plan to rent until we move back to our home state. I'm just sad because one of my goals was to have a yard for my elderly dog to lounge in before he passes.

Awww and right we wanted to move there too and still may and just rent our current house out and rent in Cali or just sell the home and move back south to buy another home when we reach retirement age as by then we should have enough to buy a home outright without a loan

No, I would like to buy a home. I will not be happy renting forever, it feels like a chain is surrounding you

I would like to buy a home but I also don’t plan on staying here forever (I will probably settle down here, but I’d like to experience something else). When I buy my home, I’ll probably rent it out or Airbnb it when I move around.

If I didn’t plan on having kids and leaving anything to anyone then no I wouldn’t mind. Everyone doesn’t want the responsibility of a house. It’s much easier to call the property manager and have them deal with the repairs etc.

I think it's a good idea if you can't see yourself settling in to one place for the rest of your life, because thats what buying a house does. Sure you can move, but the paperwork is a hassle compared to renting.

I personally could not rent my whole life. I do want to find one place to settle.

Even when you “own” you’re still renting, just the bank is your landlord. I’ve seen people buy and lose their house due to unforeseen reasons or just horrible financial decisions, so for me it’s all the same.

No. When I rent, I feel like I’m just losing money. I need to feel like I’m investing that money into something.

This to a degree. You do build equity with a home. That's probably the biggest difference.

Naw, I am not a fan of making someone else rich. Sorry, but not sorry. Also homeownership, is a key to wealth building.

As a 41 year old player no kids never been married don’t do relationships I’m happy renting Forever and moving around seeing what women have to offer around the world . I’ve been staying in air bnb since September and I it’s fine with me cuz I travel light , a few clothes and car. I’ve never Wanted a house. I’m a minimalist, just a small studio or one bedroom is needed and I can pack up and go in 30 mins if need be because I don’t like having a lot of stuff, everything I own now can fit in the trunk of my 2 door Acura coupe

I eventually want a townhome or condo. The market has them too high rn but they’re gonna be low eventually, that’s the time to buy.

Buying a home is apart of my basic retirement plan. I don’t plan on paying rent or a mortgage when I’m done working. If things don’t go the way I plan financially and I end up having to live on a fixed income, at least I can rest under a roof I own and paid off and travel with the money I have for retirement.

no who wants to be elderly and possiblee displaced and homeless
I've met quite a few older people who sold their homes and decided to rent. It was less stress than trying to maintain their homes. It really depends on the person's support network.

And the crazy Hoa, property taxes, insurance, repairs you’ll have to worry about in old age once the house is paid off. I just read a story where a girl said her 70 year old aunt’s house is falling apart and she is on fixed income and can’t afford repairs..the house is paid off. So even when it is paid off there is still uncertainty

Totally agree!!! I've had a few mishaps in the almost 13 years I have lived in the house I've been renting. Kitchen floor caved in, tornado dropped a tree on the house and messed up the roof, furnace repairs, bathroom repairs, ac went out. Got all of these issues fixed and completely new replacements or new remodels within a very fast expedient timeline, no increase in my $550 rent since moving in May 2018 and on MY timeline, and I still love my 3 bdrm house. If life permitted I would actually stay here fireverI could not imagine having to pay to repair these major things or any other small issues. My landlord has been very good to my family and I am extremely grateful for them!!! Real talk. They don't pester us or come over unannounced or anything like that. They even have blessed us with things we may (or may not) have needed.

I’m fine with it for a bit. I know it really gonna be just me and maybe a S.O. At some point so that’s what has me meh on having a home along with prices, being approved, interest, the right safe location. It’s very hard to be a homeowner where I live. Or kiss safety and being around other chill ppl goodbye lol

Right my grandparents never owned a home. My granny lived in a retirement home when she reached old age and it was nice. I will say if you plan to rent forever at least stack your money up in a savings that yields high interest also put money into your 401k and have a hefty life insurance policy for your descendants

Not like it used to be. I’m on the fence. Homeownership is a huge financial gamble and responsibility. It also doesn’t guarantee you’ll be wealthy because of it. You have to buy something you like because you may be there for a while as you navigate market ups and downs. The best scenario is if you bought during the 90s or the last financial crash. Not sure if it’s worth it these days.
