Would you disown a friend/family member if you found out they voted for a Republican or Libertarian?

You drive to your friend or uncle or brother's home. You enter and you smile until your face drops and you find Republican literature or a sign.

You see a Ron DeSantis sign. Or a Brian Kemp or Kelly Loeffler sign. Or a Chris Christie or Ron Paul sign.

What do you do?

No. This - to me - is as stupid as disowning someone because they left a particular religion.

I wouldn't disown because they are Republican, but depending on who they voted for, or what issue they voted for/against I'd be mindful about how I spend my time around them

I'm distancing myself. Not because they vote Republican but because of who they chose to vote for. I'm a registered Democrat slightly left of center but I usually vote for the better candidate in my opinion no matter their political affiliation.

Majority of my family is republican and I wouldn’t disown them, I just laugh at their stupidity

As for friends, my closest friends are all Democrats. I have a few friends who are more republican, but I don’t really talk to them that much.

You can choose your friends, not your family. At least that’s the way I look at it.

We're sure as hell not talking about politics because I'm not nice and I will tell them they're a brainwashed idiot voting against their own self interests. Let their wife worry about their sh!tty politics. I find that most black Republicans are either grifters or broke people/straight up scammers who are trans-rich in their minds and think they too will be a millionaire despite barely having an education.

Republicanism is a set of doctrines they adopt to justify their sh!tty morals and willingness to do anything for money. That's all.

I have a few immediate family members that are Republicans (yes, we are all blackity black black). I didn't disown them. However, I made it clear that we WILL NOT have any political discussions or we will lose everything we ever had.

No issues.

Totally, you have a right to your political beliefs and I have a right to distance myself based on your stance on certain issues. I've distanced myself from certain associates and relatives on issues like affordable housing, reproductive rights, voting rights, immigration, decarceration, and so on and so forth. A lot of proclaimed Christians and so called "good people" don't believe certain people deserve rights, empathy, resources, or grace and I can't rock with that.

No but I wouldn't talk politics with them, and depending on the outlandish ish they believe in I would distance myself. I have a Repub Auntie and Uncle (by marriage). We never talk politics cause her husband can never have a civil discussion and always gets extra hype. After he had my parents sit down and watch a Obama is Muslim documentary (Chilllllleee, this was a mess) politics is EXTRA off the table. I don't particularly mess with them like that anymore.

Looking at the fact that Biden has been in office since January, published 42 executive orders but none specifically for the black community speaks volumes to the political intelligence of this post. We need to stop being loyal to either political party until they earn that loyalty in real-time!!

No. My friends have various political leanings. I think that what makes life interesting. I don't expect people to think the way I do and can respect differences.

I have one rule when discussing politics. You can't take it personal! I have one friend that couldn't abide by that, so we only discuss travel and MAFS.

I already have. I've disowned any family or friends who voted for Trump or any Republican in 2020. Anyone who is into the Qanon bµllsh!t, I have no reason to ever speak to you again.

I will say that I've only had one blood-related family member getting into the Trump/Qanon sh!t, but I deleted my entire Facebook account back in 2017 because people I've known forever (grade school) have gone off the deep end. And I've completely cut off contact with any "family" members who are into this sh!t who are not blood-related.

I don't want them near me. I don't want them near people I love. They are not insane in the way they'd be found
Not Guilty" in a Court of Law, but they are knowingly monstrous. Especially, people, I had gone to school with.

I don't understand why Republicans feel entitled to friendship from people who's entire worldview they are opposed to and find immoral.

I have a cousin who turned out to have pseudonymous social media accounts as a Trump supporter. I don't talk to him unless I have to.

Eta: if he'd been at the insurrection, I wouldn't have hesitated to turn him in.

Like I keep on saying "Your vote matters unless you vote Republican or anything else". At that point all bets are off, they never knew you, why'd you vote Republican, get out of my face and all sorts of other insults follow.

One of my closest friends voted Republican. I heard him out. He said he'd rather not vote at all but since he was doing it he voted Republican. Why? He agreed with more of Trump's policies then Joe's. He said that unlike Joe Trump will tell you what he's doing and he respected that. My family? They hate the man to this day for it and he's a very close family friend. I know if it ever comes up at the table he's getting thrown out of the house. If I even mention it they curse me out and tell me things like they can't believe how stupid I am and this is what's wrong with the world.

So no, I will not disown a friend or family member. I will hear them out as to their reasons whether or not I agree with them. They are allowed their opinion just as I am my own.

I often vote libertarian. No, I have not been disowned by family and any friends distancing themselves can go quickly not slowly out the door. It's just the way we libertarians are. We like directness, not passive aggressiveness.

Hmm, maybe not, but they might not want to speak to me much because I would let them know they were stupid very consistently.

I'm a centrist and do know of at least two people who voted for Trump. I'm not a fan of their choice and openly told them that I side eye them for such, but we are able to discuss politics and disagree on certain things without it getting ugly.

I have left-of-center friends who haven't unfriended me for being gender critical, though they disagree with me (the more "woke" ones otoh....), so I try not to do the same.

The only time I have cut off far right and "woke" friends is when they continuously got aggressive and belligerent during a discussion. I don't do hostility very well.

I have distanced myself from fervent Trump supporters and anyone who buys the Q BS. Why would I associate with people whose values are so utterly the opposite of mine? Members of a cult of personality who support undermining democracy itself.

no and i'm not comfortable with how hard some people are trying to push division. it's possible to have relationships with people with differing opinions and your life shouldn't be an echo chamber, but within reason of course. no need to keep racists, sexists, homophobes around.

I reported my elementary/high school friend to Facebook for posting election disinfo

She's a wacko QAnon Latina Trump supporter. We got way heated in a back and forth and she called me a lesbian Biden dick sucker who masturbates to Democrats.

I didn't unfriendly her, and they drove her even more mad and she started writing"hahaha" on my pics and posts on BLM.

My friends were coming to my defense on Facebook, but I said just pray for her.

That made her even more livid that I posted to pray for her. She finally unfriended me.

Hahahaha last laugh

No, that is stupid. I just care about their emotional reasoning, people don't dissociate their emotions from their politics which is the problem we have today. People put their identity behind their politics not realizing it is a not who you are it is just a standards of principals of governance.
